That's awesome right there. Good work! Thanks, the cool thing about the adapter is that you can jump pads or solder caps/resisters on it to change the voltage and a few other things. I had a set in a dual socket board that did not let you change voltage. but with the adapter I was able to and I was able to get 1.6ghz ish stable if I recall. The guy that makes them is very smart, here is a link to it below.

I want to thank Scott for sending me 2 256mb sticks of pc133 CL2 ram for the 440bx system. I play Deus ex on the system and the CL2 ram helps it a little, that game is hard to play on anything old. Even going from the 1ghz coppermine to a 1.4ghz Piii-s still does not give me 60fps 24/7 in the game.
I also swapped the 440mx with a fx 5600. the fan was locked up on the FX card but I was able to rebuild it. The impeller shaft and bearing are rather worn so its still kinda noisy. I'll find a better fan or heat sink for it. Sorry I forgot to take photos of the card all apart but I'll try to post photos of the system and what I done so far latter tonight if not tomorrow. Latter this week I will do a few benches of that system, but I don't want to push it hard since I use it to play games a lot. I bought the Abit AS8 for benching and testing hardware, the 440bx is more for fun and retro gaming.

The sound card I pricked for the system, a CT3670 sounds like trash. Rather bad. If very tinny, buzzy and kinda distorted, IDK if its old caps or a low end card. I thought it might be a good one, a SB32 with a AWE64 chips and Simm slots making is more or less a cheap AWE64 with ram slots. Games see it as an AWE too. I'll see if I have the rights caps for it and recap it and if its stil not good I'll find something better or toss my SB live into the system and just use the CT3670 for dos.
EDIT: After doing some looking I found out that the sound card has a amp output and a non amped output. I'll see is switching those makes any difference

ok after playing with the card some more I found that its just the card, the caps are all good so just a lower end card. I dropped a SB live in it for now and will need to find something better.

Ok I fixed the sound bugs. The isa card only supports 4400hz, everything higher was being down sampled rather poorly. So I now have the SB live out of the system and I"m sticking to the ISA card.
Looks like newer games have the same problem, if the sound is 4800hz it gets all tinning and odd sounding. Looks like I will be stuck with the SB live. Not a big deal all the live as good dos drivers.

Since I'm sticking with the SB live I thought about swapping the 44bx board to my as8. I'll need to play around with the live on the board as I know the Live's dos drivers do not play well with some newer boards. This would free up the 440bx board for benching and TBH I rather bench with that then a p4 board.

From my memory that looks like socket A motherboard, but yes if some of the caps start popping, rest are also waiting to went out. But I've seen worse.

From my memory that looks like socket A motherboard, but yes if some of the caps start popping, rest are also waiting to went out. But I've seen worse. I seen much worse too. The caps on the board are know to fail so I knew this would happen at some point. I'll recap it and move it to the bench stand for benchmarking. The bx133 is a good bard for benchmarking cellys are early agp cards so I'll have a lot of fun with it. Its a 440bx board so unlike newer boards with universal AGP ports the AGP port is overclocked to I think 89mhz when running a 133fsb chip, so 1x or 2x cards will see slight boost in performance.

A major update. Since the caps on the 440bx failed and I was having all manner of problem with the board even after a recap I chose to swap to the Abit AS8 and boy talk about a major update in stability and usability, apps and games that did not want to run right now run right. Battle front one was a good example, the menu in the game was really slow, like a slide show slow. I have the system all together and need to do a little cable management then I'll post photos.
As of now I have the SB live working for most late dos games, I have 9x's SBpro emulation working and general midi working on some later games. CD audio still needs fixed. I think this is due to using daemon tools and not real CDs. I have a SB audigy 2 on the way and I'm hoping what I did to make the live work for dos games will work on it. I picked up some good cl2 ddr 400mhz corsair ram for a whooping 8$ 😁
I have a few small things planed for the system. I want to water cool the CPU and maybe the GPU and chipset. I'll need to find a bigger case or small rad I can shoe horn into the case to make that work. I want to swap the IDE CD drive withe a sata drive. I have blu-ray drive I might paint to match the case. I also still need a better GPU, a fx5600 is rather week for a late P4 system. I also want to get a 2m P4.
The 440bx board is going right to benching. This summer I'll be benching a few older GPUs and some cellys.
Specs of the p4 system, as of now are
2.8ghz prescot P4 with stock heat sink Abit AS8 motherboard. 512mb ddr1 400mhz cl2 ram fx5600 SB live OCZ PSU
Once again I'll post photos latter once I clean up the cable mess in the case tonight.

I chose to hold off on photos until I get the audigy in the system tonight. I also have two better GPU's on the way, an fx5950 from shrimp and a 6800 ultra I might have over payed a tick for. It will be fun to bench the two cards back to back once there in. I will not be pushing the cards to hard as one of the two I will end up keeping in the system for retro gaming wile the other card will hit the bench stand. So all I need to get now is a 2m CPU and a small radiator for the system.

Nice, I knew that xeon had a lot going for it. Do you think you could push an extra 100mhz out of it and hit first place on clock speed?
EDIT: I just saw you had all 8 cores on, I bet you can push that extra 100mhz out of the chip !!!

At the end I had it doing SPi32 @ 5750 I wanted first there but I poured a bit much and got it down to -155c and it coldbugged. It will run 5750 just gotta keep the temp tight between -145 -150

OK I got the 6800u and tested it, I'm getting about the same performance in most games on both cards, sometime slower FPS on the 6800u. I'm betting a 2.8ghz P4 is a bit of a bottleneck. I'll try to run 3dmnark and see what it says. Keep in mind this is my daily use retro gaming PC so I will not be pushing it hard or doing much tweaking to increase the scores. I don't want to have to reinstall windows 98 or brake something lol.
EDIT: I picked up a 651 and a and 660 to try in the system, on paper the 2m chips are not supported by the AS8 but I seen reports of folks running 2m prescott's and just maybe a 651 would work too.

got the 660 today and it works fine in the AS8. oddly the 6800u's fan now runs at a much higher speed. I'll update the bios on the as8 and 6800 and see if that fixes it. I also will be beaching the system tomorrow.

Ok, i'm running 3d mark on the system with the 6800u and 660. i'm getting some rather odd FPS and really low scores. the FPS is jumping back snd forth and i'm getting split second lockups witch us no doubt why i'm getting low scores.it keeps snapping between 400 200 45 and 0fps in 3dmark00. i'll have to find out what's going on here.

testing the 5950u now. oddly it's getting a much much higher score. both gpu and cpu. that's odd.

So odd 6800u i.postimg.cc/mDyQTCTn/00-6800u-stock.png5950u
I'm don't get this, I been messing around and can't seem to get the 6800u to score well on the system.the FPS are also jumping all over the palace with the 6800.
But the 5950u score is good. with some tweaking and OCing I could get a good score. Looking at HWbot I might be able to place 2nd if I try hard.

You reinstalling the driver when you change cards. Also you are running a Pentium 4 660 aint you if so do yourself a favor and run XP. Also with the 6800 use driver 197.xx or 162.xx

Also with the 6800 use driver 197.xx or 162.xx yes i'm reinstalling the drivers. i think the 6800 would score better on 2k/xp but the card is acting all kinds of funky. even in games the FPS are all over the place and it's locking up for a split second every now and then. i'll have to play around with it some more. if I find another hdd i'll install xp or 2k on it and give it go too.

After fighting the little case I put he AS8 I chose to find a bigger one. I put it in my old 90s server case for now, the really big one you saw the 440bx in for a little wile. Now to find bigger case that is a bit more modern.

Doing some more testing and found that the 6800u does work fine. oddly 98 or more so the older drivers 98 supports does not like that card. Ether way the 6800u is hitting the bench stand this summer if no one wants it.

So I have about 300$ unaccounted for in this months budget. IDK how I ended up with an extra 300$ but I do not mind. After doing some testing I found that 2k/xp will work for most of the games I play, I have a few dos games that hate dosbox witch I need to figure out but other then that I'm good. I have an idea.... Stay tuned as things will get crazy. Tons of case modding is inbound, a 6 drive raid array too and crossfire too and did someone say c2d rampage?

So some the parts for the new build are coming in today. Encase you are wondering what I'm up to... well it's an x48 rampage... Yes I'm going to sacrifice one of the best 775 board to pull duty in a gaming rig. ok ok, its a formula and not a extreme so I'm not mad 😂 I have not settled on the CPU yet I'm going back and froth on the e8600 and q9650. GPUs will be dual 4890s. SSD... IDK what but there will be 6 of them in raid. For ram I have some dommies that came with the rampage. PSU will be a PCP&C 1050w silencer.
For cooling I have Swiftech gtz (thanks shrimp) 360mm rad, hoping to fit 1 one 2 more 360mm in the case. I'm still thinking about witch fans to use, but I did buy 6 junky yate loons from Frozen CPU for like 75 cents each. I'll likely gut them and use them for spacers on the rads. No name pump from PPCs. Its a rather good pump for being a no name pump. 1/4 or 3/8 tubing, need to see what will fit. And the usual MCW82's on the GPUs, those things cool a lot well, better then any full cover block I ever used.
I have a long list of mods I will be doing to the old case. The case is the same big old beige server case you seen before. I want to add 2 more slots for 360mm rads and a hdd cage or 2 to the case as all it has right now is 5.25' bays and I want to put a second 360mm in the 5.25' bays. I want to seal off the two halves of the case and cut holes for cable management. Sleeve the PSU . Maybe add a side window to the case?
I still have a lot of parts to get and find. I'm pulling out all the stops on this build and after this one I'll likely stop tossing money on retro gaming PCs so this one has to be perfect.
