thanks mrpaco. I'll have to return the favor sometime. Not a problem at all. Got around to testing it, tested with videos on an HP CD-r & an imation DVD-r Works just fine. I thought it was CD Writer as well but its only a (ROM-drive) READER for CDs n DVDs. Based on its age n that its been sitting on a shelf, you may want to open it up and give it a good Lens n internal cleaning and lubricate the gears. Looking it up with VSO Inspector I see there is a Firmware update if you want to do that too. will try to get it in the mail tomorrow...

Thanks for the drive mrpaco I owe you one.
I have the CD drive installed into the PC. I fired up the system and oddly one of the two PSU had died since I last powered it on. I could not find the fault in the unit but luckily it's just a FSP 300w PSU with a custom connector so replacing it will not be hard. I can for the time being run the system on one PSU. I plain to get windows installed on the system soon.

Ok I found a replacement PSU and I don't even need to rewire it as it has the redundant connector on it. I took the dead PSU apart and found some rust and water damage on the back side of the PSB so the PSU was wet at some point.
I also got a 5$ of scrap out of the old dead PSU!

ok I got the replacement PSU for the 440bx system so that means I can get it all closed up and installed windows. I'll be doing that this week.

tonight I plan to clean up the wires in the 440bx system, close it up, take some photos and install my custom windows 98 setup on it. The 9x setup I have makes a few changes, its more or less a UTBC of 98 that I make to suit my needs. It replaces the 98 shell with the 95 shell and adds/removes a few parts.

I got windows installed on the 440bx system last night. But I still have to install the benches.
There are some things I would still like to do to the system, like water cooling it, installing a 1.4ghz Piii-s, faster ram and so on. But for now I need to install the software and move to the 790i

I have windows installed on the 440bx system but I"m running into some glitches with 98lite. I installed it before installing windows witch can be glitchy. I might wipe the system and reinstall everything then install 98lite last. But before doing that I might as well run a few baseline benches. Ill be doing that tonight. what I can say is the OS is supper snappy. Boots faster then my stripped down win10 setup on my 12100f system and a NVME drive.
EDIT: The PSU's are also running bit hot with the lower RPM fans. I'll be putting a 120mm fan on the PSU cage to help cool it too.

Maybe something in the SB??? IDK, Ether way I will be putting that system on the back burner for now wile I work on the z690 and making the 440bx better.

I'm seriously thinking of putting a massive heat exchanger in the back side of the 440bx system and going passive water cooling. I found one that might fit.
EDIT: Nope it will not fit.
This weekend if I get time I will make a hdd block with some scrap mettle I have sitting around.

After giving it a lot of thought I will be putting a rad in the fount of the case, I have room for a 480mm rad in the front of the case, I don't have any 480mm rads but I have a hand full of 360mm rads so I will use one of those. With a 360mm rad I could use very low rpm fans or maybe even go passive. here is the spot I want to put the rad i.ibb.co/Vtf3C4B/IMG-E0848.jpgThe side of the case has vents on it so if I seal off the box area in the front of the case the heat from the rad would blow out the side of the case. I might give that a shot.

I'll be back at working on this system this weekend. I have a block in the mail I should be able to use on the north bridge and still need to mount the 360mm rad into the case.

I'm starting to find the 300w redundant PSU setup is very limiting. I think I will gut the redundant part out the PSU box and mood it to fit more conventional PSU's I want to put 2 more SCIS drives in the system, a water pump, and 1.4ghz Piii-s. at 300w I am very much so pushing it. Luckily the redundant PSU box fits regular ATX PSU's albeit the shorter ones. I'm sure I could ether mod the PSU's I have now to make them none redundant or find better 4-500w PSUs. My thought is that I could have one PSU power the fans, pump, HDDs, CD/floppy drive wile anther one could power the core system.

Last night I got my first chinesium water block. Is a simple 40x40mm copper block, it was listed on amazon as being a finned block, that was a big lie. Its a old school cross drilled block. Funny thing, the block was belt sanded smooth on the top but the bottom it was milled. The top is smother then the bottom that comes in contact with the chip The block also has a lot of sharp rough edges, so I'll chamfer the edges and lap the bottom before making a mount for it to fit to my motherboard chipset.

OK, I don't want to do it but I'm moving away from the redundant PSU. It looks so cool and what not but at 300w I'm pushing it on power. I picked up a OCZ mod stream PSU Sellers photos i.ibb.co/FHQtzFV/s-l16001.jpgi.ibb.co/LYn13D7/s-l1600.jpgI'm not a fan of the blue UV cables but that is not hard to fix.
I'll need to make a PSU bracket to mount it in my case too.

I received the PSU last night. its not in the best shape cosmetically and the cable sleeveing sure is stiff. I cleaned up the PSU as best as I could and swapped a fresh fan into it. I will take photos and post them when I get home. This weeked I will be bussy so maybe next weekend I will make the PSU bracket to hold the PSU in place.

After going back and forth on a CPU upgrade for the system, the 1ghz was not cutting it. I chose to get a 1.4ghz P3 and I will use a solder on adapter from the fella in Korea. I was going to get a p4 but chose not to. I will be making a PSU bracket for the new PSU this weekend and if I get it in time I will pin mod the 1.4ghz CPU

OK looks like the 1.4ghz Piii was delivered today so this weekend I will be modding it to work in the 440bx board. I also picked up a smaller case. I been trying to down size and the massive case I have now is too big.
Seller photos of the new smaller case
it will need a good bit of cleaning but will work great. I have room for the two scsi drives and their coolers, might have room up front for a 120mm and a dual 80mm in the rear if I wanted to put a rad back there.
If anyone wants the massive server case I have now let me know. local pickup only, I'm in ohio.
EDIT: I started modding the 1.4ghz Piii last night, but I needed some info on the adapter I had, so I was stuck waiting for a replay from the fella in Korea that sells them. I should get the chip modded this week at some point.
on a side note I have the chip de-lidded.

I got the smaller case last night and started to move the system over to it. Sadly the case was a little smaller then I thought. wile all the parts fit its a tight fit. No room for a bigger GPU if I wanted to upgrade. no room for any of the 5.25' hdd bay adapters and so on. To top that off I was trying to shorten my SCSI cable and broke the terminator not realizing it was permanently attached and not removable 🤦♂️ So in place of doing the smart thing and getting a sorter SCSI cable I chose to get a sata card and drop a raptor drive into the system. Removing the second SCSI drive will free up space for a longer GPU if I ever wanted one and the raptor runs much cooler then 2 15k rpm SCSI drives. TBH I only wanted the SCSI drives for the sounds they make and the drives I have are rather quite.
EDIT: After digging through my stash I found a old cheap 120gb ssd. I'd hate to use it over the raptor but I sold off all my raptors not long ago so cheap ssd is it.

Snagged a rely good deal on a NOS XFX 5950 ultra.... I should have never sold all my 5950s. 140$ after shipping/tax not bad for a new 5950.

Revived the XFX 5950 last night, its new all right! I'll get some photos tonight. It has some funky connector on it, a 2 pin fan header looking things coming form the visa port area and some funky small gold round plug tat looks like a mini BNC cable I also have most of the system moved over the the smaller case and will get photos of it as well.

Got a big bonus at work... I bought a Abit AS8 bundled with a fx 5600 some ram and a 2.8ghz chip, I also bought a BFG 6800OC with a danger den block block. Looking to find a CPU block to match with it. The ABit board will be fun to play with and will give me a second board to test AGP cards in.the 6800 was a impulse buy. I know I will put it to use someday.
