OCN HD5000 Freezer' Burn Competition

Hey W9!

We are starting a new Freezer' Burn competition at OCN.  Unlike last time, nobody had advanced knowledge of the GPU.  I thought I would pop in here and invite you to join us!  You guys did amazing last time and ended up taking hope more prizes than OCN people.  So please, go dig out your HD5000 series GPU's and join us.

For each benchmark you wish to compete in, you will be required to submit a screenshot and a picture of the computer running the benchmark. Only screenshots with the valid competition wallpaper will be accepted.

As mentioned above, the 2D section of this competition is going to be a little different, we are allowing ALL CPU’s. To make multi-threaded benchmarks like Cinebench R15 fair for everyone involved, the score will be divided by the core count. After evaluating many of the top scores on Hwbot, we determined that Intel 2,4,6,8 cores are the best when dividing by core, but the margin is pretty tight. There is no particular CPU we have seen which has an unfair advantage.

There will be 4 benchmarks in each category but only your top 3 will be scored. We encourage you to participate in all 4 stages. However, we wanted to add the option of dropping one score in case you have difficulties getting a score or there are other problems. It’s in your best interest to submit to all 4 stages. The benchmarks for this competition are as follows:

Score: The score will be be the multicore memory score only
Required: Validation link. This benchmark can be run in offline mode by saving the result file and uploading it on a different, internet connected computer. All submissions missing the validation link will be rejected.

No 5830? Also, as far I I can tell only 5830, 5850 and 5870 have double precision support for GPUPI compute...

Insert obligatory "Sure hope those who get cash rewards from OCN actually get paid" comment. Yes I'm still waiting on $50 USD I won on OCN a year and a half ago (not in a benching competition), and yup, still kind of bitter about being awarded something, a week later it being on hold, and then for several months after being told "we'll get back to you".

Yeah, I'll be poking the higher ups about it again as the last time I asked (a few months ago) they were still working out the new forums. New ones shouldn't have any problems at all, it's just those of us who've had our prizes as "up in the air" for quite some time from some events (May 2017 to be precise).

My concern lies with the upper management - I have plenty of faith in mllr, Nox, and the various others involved. Especially for putting on a good show and competition! ^_^

Hell, before mllr started kicking in doors - I mean talking with various companies - most of the OCN benching competitions were for bragging rights, and maybe a few $25 gifts kicked in from OCN - the Foldathons (and F@H Team Competitions, as well as the no longer running BOINCers Gone Bonkers monthly events) had larger prize pots. Now we have on the table a wide variety of things, from multiple sponsors, AND most importantly it's a case of forum participation, not being exclusively on one particular team, which truly shows a desire to improve AND foster benching as a hobby overall, especially for items that are inexpensive to acquire, and a ton of fun to run.

Oh, and most of the prizes are participation related too, which is always nice to see.

Plus the benches are, going from previous experience, debated about for quite some time, with plenty of feedback (that's listened to, even if it's "uggggh, so not a fan of Jane Nash!",which usually got back at the time "yes and the rest of us aren't a fan of the same dubstep music over and over again, how have you not gone insane yet?" for a reply (I used to run Catzilla as my main gpu bench, and even held several GTX 780 hardware golds for quite some time)), and the goal really is one of those "don't give a damn what you're running, come in and show us what you can do with your skill and available gear, not how big of a wad you can blow from your wallet" kind of things.

Nah, "sadly" not. It's the Catzilla music that I was referring to. After a while, it has a bad habit of turning most people's brains into mush because of how boring and generic it is But it will give you clues about an unstable overclock in at least four key areas, and ones that will tend to show up at least a few seconds before graphics glitches happen - pill drop is the biggest... If audio de-syncs there, you won't survive the last bench, and usually will crash before the explosion.

At least, that's how things have shown to me after several hundred runs of the bench. Such a pity it's a bug ridden mess of a bench nowadays, because I enjoyed that one, and even almost managed to beat several LN2 scores using winter air - sure wasn't easy, but it was fun turning a black $20 desk fan mostly white over time, and killed at least one this way...

Catzilla was the one I got within striking range of ftw's score, I think I got something like 450 points from one of his scores. It's still a score I wouldn't mind beating one of these days, but I suspect a soldering iron will be involved after I send some money Vince's direction again (I really want to get a GPU cooling pot one of these days - a fat Tek9, because they play a lot better with dry ice than the slims)

That is a really good point, not all HD5000 support GPUPI, do they... I didn't think of that, you guys always have my back    Well, all of HD5000 is legal except the dual core one, I guess I missed 5830, I will check that out.

Also, WhiteWulfe has a VERY valid point! There were some issues with OCN cash payouts, several people were left waiting many months. They required a special PayPal money request and if it was not done perfectly then the payment was ignored. As far as I know all the people who didn't get the payout were asked to re-submit the request and have subsequently been paid. Lets hope all that is in the past. The benching prize money is confirmed and untouched in the bank, as well as money for future comps. They gave me an annual budget for cash prizes. Don't you worry about the prizes, I will rampage and crack some skulls if any of the sponsors or prizes don't come through...you better believe that.

I wouldnt think anyone would be using HD5830 or lower unless they just want to get a sub on the board but they wouldnt be expecting to win anyway.

dave,  if you have a 2 x gpu in a HD 5000 series card, is it allowed if 1 is disabled ??, actually dont know if 1 can be disabled so thought id ask

I had a 4850x2 and you cannot turn off the other "Gpu Core" but you can disable crossfire however.

Very good and smart comp. plan ! It's highly opened for the masses, no need the newest, strongest or any super specicated hw ! That's what we need at Hwbot much more frequently, in my opinion ! Also that's why I like being here. Spirit of having fun with overclocking !

Yep Dave tries to make it easy for everybody 5870 can be found real cheap.
But dont be fooled into a false sense you will need Skylake or later with very good mem for a top spot in the 2D section.
But there is not much he can do about that it appeals to broadest amount of people no one can expect to win except a lucky door prize with Haswell or earlier.
Its all for good fun what overclocking should be about.

i knew it was single core only, i read the rules,  but that wasnt my question, it was a 2 part question, IF you could turn off 1 core and if so would it be allowed to be used as a single core ,

some people on ebay want a stupid amount for some of these cards... I have an amp that doesn't belong to me on the repair bench (ordered bits a month ago that still haven't arrived). Once I have that gone I'll start looking in to this camp.

Nailed it!  I agree, someone is going to need very high tier equipment to win this thing for both ambient and extreme.  We have already seen some crazy memory in geekbench, like 4200 12-11.  This time around you cannot win anything with binned engineering sample hardware, so there is at least that (which honestly doesn't do much)!  The unlimited CPU, R15 stage is interesting, it look like Intel 4-core might be best.

I hope all of you come join us, even if you don't have top hardware or don't have an HD5000 series card.  The lucky draw prizes are better this time and all it takes it takes is one sub to enter.

Submitted 3 stages. Have a bad HD 5870 which can do around 950/1350. Will submit geekbench 3 on oc formula and expected to do around 8000. Any competition, I will always get a sub in....all stages as well.
