I bagged an NF7S V2.0 on ebay. Going to piece together a Barton rig again. No idea what I'll do with it, though.
I used to have a Barton XP-M 2500+ CPU. 1.83GHz which clocked into the mid 2's easily. I'm a bit rusty on my Socket A hardware though. Were there any other unlocked Barton cores besides the Mobile chips?

Yes, however that depends on the date of the chip.
The "Superlock" date for Socket A is 0339 and anything newer is locked, any chips of or older than that date aren't "locked" but the tradeoff is older chips normally didn't clock too well vs newer dated ones. Any mobile Barton core chips later than the superlock date tend to be better than ones of it or older too, usually any dates from the year 2004 and onward are what to get by date. The newest 2003 chips are also good, I believe any dates after 0341 are worth looking at. For a desktop, see if you can find an XP-3200 that's newer than the superlock date, usually those are good chips but the best are from 2004 and newer.

Were they able to use a lower multiplier if locked?

No - You coudn't make it change at all, higher or lower.

No - You coudn't make it change at all, higher or lower. I was also wondering about the XP mobile chips... Were they also all superlocked from "0339" on? Do the LV versions clock well? Edit: Also... About how high (or ~ last manufacture date) do the date codes go for socket A/462 chips?

No, XP-M's are always unlocked regardless of date. The latest date for a Socket A, aside from a Geode I've ever seen is 0535, that being a Sempron I have here. Geodes can be as late as 2007, perhaps even later.

No - You coudn't make it change at all, higher or lower. s462 is ALWAYS multi unlocked downward. Intel is not. To answer some other questions: XP-M's are what you want. LV if you can find them. Newest dates you can find will clock better. XP-M 2400's and XP-M 2800's seem to be the overall better clockers. 2200 Barton's were ok also. For future reference, the 2500's and 2600's were not very good.

Then this is correct - However for some reason I recall my superlock chips not wanting to change multiplier at all but you would remember it better than I anyway - Been a LONG time since I've fooled around with my A's. My XP-M 2600 is as described (2.6 dead-max no matter what) but I do have a XP-M 2500 that's clocked higher than anything I've ever had for Socket A (2.9+) and did it on chilled. However the chip is picky about what board it wants to run in. Acts dead in some, goes right on in others.

I do know Socket A's can be a pain with those, esp the 10.5 multi - I believe that's right.

Great discussion. From memory I thought the XP-Ms were all unlocked to allow for more thermal control by laptops.
I have a Kyro II, GF2 MX400 and a GF3 Ti200 for AGP cards to put in it. The GF3 was good enough for Halo back in the day.
Thinking WinXP might be as new as I want to go on this board?
What fun stuff can I do with it besides old 3D Mark benching and maybe my old DOS games?

Yes, XP is what you'd really want to run with it but it can run any 32 bit OS, at least 32 bit Win 7 at the very least. For old DOS games, 98SE would be perfect for those but XP can handle it all too. Maybe a dual boot setup on a drive for 98SE and XP is what to do with it.

I've tried W7 32b starter on socket A. It's not all half bad with a lite cut version. Good for certain benchmarks, not so good for others. XP will be the way to go for anything memory benchmark related.

XP it is, then.
Now I have to find the mounting hardware for my SP97 heatsink again.....
Also will swap the stock NB sink for my NB-1C slug of copper.

One is a late date code (05xx) 3000+ and the other is a XP-M 2800+ chip. The XP3000+ is superlocked and the default x13 multi will not change either up or down.

Interesting. I will have to review some of my locked chips. I could be wrong about this. It's been a while.

Nope. Multi on my 3000+ Barton is unlocked downward. I have benches run at 10.5, 11, and 12 multi's. Production date is 0420, well after the superlock date. I can add pics if you like.

Could be something about the BIOS that makes it fully locked or lets it go down, I do recall mine being fully locked regardless.

That is odd... Maybe it is something with my particular board or BIOS?? I think my (0217) 2100+ Palomino also seems to be downward locked. My (0304) 2700+ T-Bred B is unlocked both up/down. My (0340) 2500+ Barton is unlocked both up/down. I'm assuming that my XP-M 2800+ will have no issues and be fully unlocked but I haven't installed/tested it yet. The only other board I have on hand is an ASUS A7V8X (VIA 400) motherboard. I did have an ABIT NF7S R.2.0 back in the day but it is long gone now. Edit: I found this page on-line from the mid-2000's about AMD chips (locked/unlocked)... link

I got my father's old chips. A Barton 2500+ and Thoroughbred 2400+. The Barton will boot at 400FSB no problem for a nice round 2.2GHz.
Issue now is that the system freezes on Memtest at random, no matter the sticks in it. Can't imagine the CPU going bad and it's running cool enough, so I'm going to replace the capacitors on the VRM for the CPU.

I used to use tic tac bios’s when I had an nf7-s. don’t forget with nf2 timings like 2-3-3-11 will work better than 2-3-3-6 iirc.

The memory in it is DDR400 Cas 2.5. Haven't messed with timings at all yet. Looks like it has a 3rd party bios on it.

Would it happen to be OCZ ram? I had some with copper spreaders rated for 2.5-3-3-6 or 7 and they would only run cas 2.. weirdest ram I have ever owned. They did do cas3 too but that's no fun unless you are right at the edge of everything.

I don't think any of it is. None of it is matched either. Just blah green PCB regular ram.

If I could figure out if it was worth anything, I'd probably would have sold them all long ago. Clockers are looking for good socket A chips all day long. They are becoming very scarce now and it is a favorite in this hobby. I burned up a lot of them when I was active and was always looking for replacements and would pay much more than they were worth to a noobie. The guys in this group in particular went thru them like water down Niagara Falls.

Some of us still have a pretty good supply. A couple of tupperware boxes full. At least one of everything released. Example :
