I like the Grand National. I really liked mine when I had it. I had closer to 700HP at the wheels but I did some work to it. Mine was a 4.1 turbo. Not stock at all so..... I think mine would have beat the Hellcat........maybe. I took the Vin Code 7 out and replaced it with 4.1. Everything from the 3.8 bolted onto the 4.1 and I had a bigger turbo added on amongst a few odds and ends. I had too much power coming off the rear end though. I twisted the rear axle housing really bad one night. I didn't want to put anymore money into that car so I sold it complete with both engines. Was a really nice car.

I had a '83 T-type Regal for a little while. Didn't do it for me. Rode like a buckboard and the turbo lag was horrible.

Not really a turbo lag issue over the lack of V6 low end torque. The base model at less then 200hp. The later models around 350hp and none of them could break 400 foot pounds of torque while slap a Big block with a camper cam under the hood without boost and it would have been a fast car considering the light weight compared to 60s and 70s hot rods.
I'd strip the V6 from the grand national personally, it's just a cheap to manufacture economy engine with a turbo, not really impressive.

Scottie, the '87 was a totally different beast. Vin code 7 in the '87 model year was the best of them. It had neck snapping acceleration and was at that time the fastest production car made with nothing else able to keep up with it.(Mass Production Wise)Then there was the ever popular 4.1 stage 1 upgrade which is what I did to mine. Beyond that like stage 2 was more for track racing.
I had mine up on one wheel when I twisted the rear axle tube. Geez that damned thing produced a lot of torque. The 4.1 that is. My girl friend and my Mom and Dad refused to go for a ride in it. Every time it shifted out of second gear it threw them back in the seats and they hated it. LOL

And I put the Porsche and BMW boys to sleep. That was with the factory package with a couple of little tweaks here and there.

GNX was a fast car. Proto type engines the entire Star Wars theme black color.
The 4.1L was a dog. I don't think you twisted an Axle tube with one without some serious modifications.

Stage II
I knew a guy in Bensenville that had a transmission shop one owned one like that in the video. He's the guy that blue printed the trans on mine. I was embarassed to bring my stage 1 around him. I couldn't even keep up with him and I could get 10 second 1/4s out of mine.

I don't remember the Buicks and Monte Carlos of that time being fast when the small block cameros and el caminos where the sought after cars of that time.

The Monte Carlos, Olds Cutlass and standard Buick Regals were not fast at all. The Buick Turbo T's were different.

That was not a standard 4.1L engine Jon. Not like what you have seen like on the big Buicks. These were performance crate engines from G.M.. 4.1 stage 1 engines. Not stock horse power at all. What was nice about that particular engine is that all the accessories from the 231 would just bolt on to the 4.1. I worked at G.M. Jon, I sold these engines and we serviced and warrantied them. I was knee deep into this stuff back then.
Edit: oh and I used to race Jon. Serious racing. As a hobby but yeah.

They only made those models in certain years and used the 3800 engine. I dont remember the early models of 4.1l with turbo.
But then the GNX models where actually fast and built in late 80s.
Yea we can mod 4 cylinders to 1000hp. They come with turbos factory now.
You can upgrade anything I get that part. Ive seen go carts faster then 90% of stock sports carz lol.

The 4.1 stage 1 was an engine that was offered by General Motors. You bought it as crate. I purchased mine and installed it into my car and had the trans blue printed/strengthen to hold the power. The 4.1 stage 1 did not come in the car from the factory Jon. It was an add on/upgrade. Nothing like the 4.1s(252) that was in like a 1982 Lesabre. These were performance engines.

And honestly, the stock 3800 Turbo engine was more than enough for that car. Even though I do prefer naturally aspirated it was nice, smooth and powerful. Mine had no turbo lag at all, they had worked that stuff out in the later years and there were also performance chips available that also helped with a few things here and there. I really got into these cars for a while. Worked with techs at G.M. that were into all this turbo performance and I got sucked into it as I was just surrounded by it where I worked. I did blow a lot of money on it though. I was in a Grand National Club, A G.M. performance club. I was nuts.
Speed, speed, speed.

There used to be shops around Chicago that specialized in these cars. There was one at Mannheim and North Avenue that was into performance upgrades and tuning of just GN's. He was a good customer of mine. Sold lots of parts to him. ....money, money, money. There was a really good trans shop in Elmhurst that blue printed transmissions for GN's(did mine)and the dealership I worked at in Evanston was licensed to sell upgraded crate engines for the GNs. It was quite a time for Buick back then. All gone now. I kinda miss those times. I sold the car to a guy back in '92. Shortly after, he wrecked it. Hit a light pole and nearly died. Engine and trans went under the car. Turned his legs into kindling. Turns out the car was too much for him.

Out by me there's tons of performance shops. The kid behind our shop owns a drift modder shop. The racing now is different than it was then. The kids look out the side window while trying to drive down the block. It cracks me up cause they think the cars are fast but actually only build glorified burn out machines. Dang wheels on a 43 degree angle looks as if riding on the side walls some of em. Mostly imports.

That video isn't accurate about the year of el camino. That one is a late model 82 or newer. Mine was the last year for single head lights, this one has 4.

Love those El Camino's. Used to see a lot of those at the Chevy Shop at Cicero and Addison here in the city when I was a kid.
Edit: That El Camino looks sweet. I'd like to see that sucker doing a run.
