When DDR2 was now my hardware budget was pretty limited so had to really try and choose wisely. First set were some Corsair DDR2 800s (P965) good price good reviews and until I got more into benching didn't realize the rev. on mine was not the same as those reviewed (happened to me on DDR also). Next came some G. Skill DDR2 1000 not the best clockers but would post in anything (early X38/48). Finally to get to the 1200 mark or better figured it would be cheaper to buy a high binned kit than running through a bunch of Crucial Ballistix DDR2 800 so picked up some Patriot DDR2 1200, was so happy with them pickup a second kit 3 or 4 months latter once budget allowed. Now that the hardware budget is controlled my me and that most DDR2 is only available used I have a tendency to search for the high binned kits as well as stuff that looked cool for the time so figured I'd share some binning results as some of what I have doesn't show up on most DDR2 list and I'm looking at 2x2 kits as well. Finally good S775/771 DDR2 boards are fairly common on Ebay as well as some AM2 boards so a good set of RAM can make for some fun benching on the cheap.

Time for a little information for those that don't know. Micron D9s are the most desirable IC. Buying Crucial Ballistix RAM is the easiest way to get D9s as Crucial is a subsidiary of Micron. Most other RAM manufactures on their popular lines may change IC manufacturer some where along the line as long as the new choice meets the specifications desired. The problem with binning Crucials' at this point in time all D9s were not created equal and come in varies flavors. Crucial never competed in the high bin market to my knowledge so I'm generally talking about their DDR2 800 & 1066 kits. From my own research over the years the Tracer (bling factor) line may have a better chance of having the better D9s (more impression than a fact as I don't have a set, based on they hit the market during the better D9 production runs?). There is a DDR2 RAM list posted here and lists some of the variations for the D9s and sure similar if not the same list exist on every forum that has anything to do with overclocking.

Methodology
Using FSB to control RAM speed (355 FSB nets 533 (1066 RAM)), using SetFSB, jump in 10 MHz jumps to freeze or blue screen, reboot and set FSB in BIOS to highest jump minus 5 MHz before problems then using SetFSB again hopping 2.5 MHz increments taking screen shots as I go. I was only going to use 2.2 & 2.3v but have had a couple kits that were not happy at 2.2v.

Notes
(1) Intel Core 2 Dual E8600 was a random pick by me from some untested and the #1 core is stuck at 47c.
(2) The first 2x2 kit tested were a set of Kingston ended up having to raise MCH to 1.5v for any kind of stability so going to use 1.5v on the 2x2 kits. [P1 -45]
(3) Had some problems with memory slots 1/3, paper towel residue from cleaning the fingers with 90% alcohol on a paper towel, canned air took care of it. Although have had a couple kits uncomfortable in 1/3 since. [P1-20]
(4) Forgot to up MCH to 1.5v, did run them at 1.5 also no change so the Kingstons might not of been a good reference for the decision. [P1 - 24] 
(5) Nothing on the Sticker/label about timings, would of looked better as DDR2 800. Interesting way of trying to sell crap sticks! [P1 - 49]
(6) Bought as 2x2 showed up 2x1 new in the package, no insertion marks on the fingers. [P1 - 17]
(7) I wasn't going to test these, good example as how the lottery works. [P1 - 19]
(8) I have 4 sticks, combined two with closes serial numbers. -0137371 & -0137519, [P1 - 10]

Third down lighter in color, no retainer clips and show speed, timings, voltage in the smaller label.
Fourth down only have one stick but did see if it would post at DDR2 1200 2.2v see second image, third down was a no show.
Have another set of DDR2 1066 that match the third down but do not have speed, timings, voltage, one stick is dead the other was a no show at DDR2 1200 also.

I've tested eight examples in Phase 1 where two / three kits have the same model numbers, listed biggest difference to smallest below. Referenced images show the fastest stick top position of the two shown and all sticks shown are from tested kits. The results from the PNY XLR8 kits are not what I expected to see thinking a big deference in like kits would be more along the lines of the G. Skill Pi DDR2 1100 difference. As both PNY kits were Ebay purchases and from different sellers maybe there past environments have a bigger hand in the the large spread (Can not rule out an IC change). Corsair and Kingston the results are not unexpected although past environment can not be ruled out.

Final Thoughts
I'm a Patriot Fan Boy as I also have a set of second gen. DDR3s that do pretty well in X58 & AM3 but their 1066s were no where close to what I thought they would do. OCZ wasn't high on my list as I have more than few DDR kits that meet specs plus a little but nothing outstanding, Although no firsts for OCZ they did rack up a sixth with a 2.3v submission and and eighth at 2.2v in the 2x1 kits as well as a third in the 2x2 kits falling behind the G. Skill Pi DDR2 1100 kits which play by themselves in the 2x2 kits.

I kept voltage to 2.3v or less and 2.2v on all the possible D9 kits except [P1 - 5, 6 & 14] & tested [P2 - 8] @ 2.3v, just to keep the playing field as level as possible.

During the day of DDR2 Everest was the goto memory tester. Everest sold, was re-coded and became Aida64 as older screen shots referenced Everest, figured it would be of value to have a side by side comparison. Took the CPU up to a 10 multi and FSB to 400 for a 600 memory speed using the 2:3 divider, tightened performance level to 6 and tRFC to 48 and ran the memory testing app of both.

I believe I am, the Hypers I got are indeed the same sticks as listed. The Ballistix sticks I have coming in will arrive tomorrow and then I'll have a chance to try them out. Have to finish reworking my tower but once that's done I can do some testing.
The OCZ Plats (2x 1GB sticks) I knew I had were OK overall, I think the board I'm using is hurting things in what I get. I can setup the Dark and see what goes there since It's a DDR2 board.

Pulled out my Crucial DDR2 800 kits (4) and to make things tough only binned them if they would post at DDR2 1200. Turns out one was a 2x512M kit although Newegg says there 2x1 and couldn't find any other info so relying on CPUz and BIOS. The 2x1s would post but no way in hell make Windows so upped the voltage 2.3v.

Crucial doesn't give much information on their stickers but the small one gives model # (also mentions lead free) the larger one on the examples I have can be clear or white The clear labels show the upper # as batch lower # PN the white labels have the #s but don't tell you what they mean, both have black lettering.

Phase 2, DDR2 800 Kits

After a little thought decided to test DDR2 800 kits. The first part started out to be DDR2 1000 or better but ended up DDR2 900 with a few DDR2 800 kits for comparison as I hadn't decided on the DDR2 800 only concept at the time.

As DDR2 800 & 4-4-4-12 go hand in hand will compare these on their CL 4 performance as well as show their CL 5 performance. Those kits unable to run CL 4 will be rated on their CL 5 results. Do note, No Result for CL 4 means unable to post at DDR2 800 minimum, no attempt was made to find a point where they will run CL 4. (I used a 266 FSB which shows memory at 399 MHz in CPUz or DDR2 798 as the staring point and where testing was done when kits were acting unstable.) 

All hardware, practices and settings remain the same with the addition of memory timings, CL=4, tRCD=4, tRP=4, tRAS=12, tRFC=48, CR=2T, as shown in CPUz.

(A) Part of a 5 kit lot purchase I thought were DDR2 1066 kits, not going to complain. [P2 - 1]
(B) Following the variations of Corsair RAM even with all the available guides is a real pain. [P2 - 10, 17, 21, 24, 40 & 42]
(C) New in the sealed package. [P2 - 38]
(D) Both kits erratic, ran them through 10 minutes of Aida with just memory stress on. no problems at CL4 settings 2,2v. Kit 2 results were so bad thinking maybe OS going, checked OK with Crucial kit. [P2 -16 & 55]
(E) Kit rejected from Phase 1, added out of curiosity [P2 - 22]
(F) Have two kits 591 difference in serial numbers, SPD show same week & year and hard to tell apart when ran 2x2. [P2 - 42]
(G) Hopefully look better in a Nividia Chipset board as not looking good here. [P2 - 47 & 52]

If you just collect RAM G. Skill has the most variations of low profile heat spreaders / stickers. Back ground color is generally model dependent. Combine all the possibilities together could be a pretty hefty collection if all models span all heat spreader variations. Stick 4 not tested as I only have one.
