We get both as you guys know, favoring tornadoes in frequency but hurricanes are in the mix too. This mornings line came through and didn't do much more than dump some rain and move on.
OK - We'll warm up, get all nice in cozy and the next cold front will try to push down again.... What we get is bad enough - The states/guys West of us always catch hell in comparison.

It's always something Rods. I am very grateful right now that we didn't have what others around me are going thru. Looks like my neighbors around me have flooded basements. I'm seeing hoses running out from their houses to the streets.

Looks like your basement is sealed properly to keep it out, at least to the extent you got it last night. So you don't have a pipe going through the wall for the sump pump for pushing the water out?
That's easy to fix up and you can even place a cap over the pipe's end or a ball valve if you want in line to keep the critters/bugs out during warmer months. That way all you do is flip a switch and let it do it's thing instead of dragging crap (Hoses) around.

I installed a brand new top of the line Zoeller M98 pump with battery backup last year when I bought the house along with a brand new backup battery. These things ain't cheap but well worth the price. $1500 for that setup alone. The previous owner left the sump pump system a horrible mess so I had no choice but to replace and upgrade the system. It has a 2 1/2" pvc discharge that goes out the side of the house. Then I installed a freeze guard adapter to the end of that because of the sub zero temps here without it I would have a block of ice hanging from the side of the house in the winter months. Then from that I installed a 25 foot section of 4 inch flexible drain pipe so I could run the water out to where I wanted it to go which is in the side of the front yard. Works good. That sucker is pumping out a lot of water from the sump pump basin right now. And I also installed a backwater valve in my 4 inch floor drain in the basement to prevent backflow of water into my basement. That sucker is a life saver. Next up will probably be a whole house generator. I have an appointment in the middle of the month for that one. The world around me is changing and not for the better. I have to prepare my home as best I can for the things that will be coming my way. Winter isn't the only thing I need to prepare for.

Been busy preparing the house for this upcoming winter. Farmers Almanac says maybe an El Nino year coming up. If it comes true it could be a rough winter. I have my first purchase of calcium chloride in the house to melt ice and snow. Putting down my mulch and fertilizers. And the big one..........I purchased a whole house Generac Generator. Installation was completed today. After what happened last year with an ice storm that left us without power, no hot water or heat. I decided "F" that. Now I have a standby 24kw generator. My family and I froze our asses off last year. But hopefully that won't happen again. Winter sucks. And I don't intend to be outside much this coming winter except for the occasional cleaning of the snows and salting. My nerve damage has had enough. It's only September and I'm already dreading winter. My bones are telling me to prepare. I can feel it coming. View AttachmentView AttachmentView Attachment www.farmersalmanac.com/extended-forecast Fuck winter. sick of snow and cold.

I say fuck summer....... Too damned hot and humid but if you enjoy the heat, we've got it.
We never have an extended cold snap to mention and when it gets cold it doesn't last long. Last truly cold snap we had that lasted was back in 95 around Christmas, that one did settle in and temps stayed cooler until spring but I cannot recall another like it since.
I remember it because on that particular Christmas day in 95 I was with the boss down in Panama City, finishing up a job at a home on the shore/water and the cold was beyond intense..... Low 20's with a breeze coming straight in from the gulf too, that was NOT one of the warmest days of my life nor one of the shortest.
We went down early, did the work and came back on the same calendar day.

I've been here a year and a half and lost power three times in that amount of time. The last time was the straw that broke the camel's back. I didn't take the hint when I saw almost every other garage around here with a portable generator in it. Fuck that, I want a full-time backup generator that is fully automatic. And this one has a ten year warranty and the company that installed it will maintain it on a yearly basis. They are connected to it 24/7. And it is hooked up via wifi. I can check on it on my phone via app and it let's me know if it has any problems or when it's maintenance time. If I need a robot this is the kind I want. Edit: as long as my home is toasty warm during the winter months and nice and cool during the storms of summer I don't care what happens outside.

oh he's gonna learn, I did... -35C feels like -50C with windchill.. and I had to walk nearly 750m from the parking to where I needed to be... after 2 weeks I finally got my parking pass to park just a few meters...
depending where in Brampton he's from, a good 6" of snow would destroy the roads because they aren't full width. And with cars needing to park on the road... you're land-locked in your yard/parking spot.. or a 20min commute turns to 2hrs real quick...
Don't really have that where you are.. but tell him to change his engine coolant if he brought his car over.. They only do down to around -30 out here.. Won't last a weekend there in the peaks.

I'm going to have to add that to my bag or tricks.

It's been a cold Halloween here for the kids. It's been in the mid 30sF during the day. 20sF at night. Breezy which brings the temps down. And we had about an inch or so of snow. It's sticking to the grassy surfaces mostly. But it is cold. My nerve damage is really bugging me now. We're about 50-60 miles Northwest of The City of Chicago so it gets a bit colder up here at times. I'm about 20 minutes or so from the Wisconsin border. I have been staying inside.

Temps are dropping right now outside with the kids seeing them in the 50's for doing their thing for Halloween this evening. We're supposed to see temps around freezing this morning coming up, was going around in short sleeves last night not long after sundown and it was comfortable.... But that's not the case tonight.
Then, as usual the temps will pop right back up again and the AC will run once again.

I take them occasionally for sciatica.

Nothing I want to happen but still beats being a cripple as the alternative and yes, there is no guarantee how it's gonna go if and when it happens. It's warmed up some here already and it's supposed to warm back up again by Friday here with highs in the 70's or so.
