I have not built a rig for my usage by using new parts in a long while but now felt tempted to do it. Pulled the trigger on a Ryzen 5 3600 and a B550M motherboard as there was an offer incl. free delivery to home.
Making a sleeper using a sturdy OEM Compaq uATX case, a bit of a odd design it almost looks good. The CPU, motherboard and 2x8GB 3200 are all in stock so I expect it to arrive within 1-4days. PSU, GPU and disk is what I have from before. It is a budget build as I did not want to spend too much, while having computers in a multitude already. The choice of B550M motherboard was not easy, a lot of offerings & price range to select from.
For a moment was looking at intel LGA1200 Z490M/Z590M also, but for the price the features were limited vs AMD AM4.

Just watch the cooling and airflow... those old compaq's had an interesting design..

^Good call. Will check. The case has two air intakes on the right hand side(microBTX style case), one small air intake in left panel and an air intake on the front bezel, left side. If things get too complicated I might take another case.

ah, ok. I'd make the side and front intake and use the PSU for outgoing...
I was thinking of the older off-white design that only had the front intake and rear exhaust and there was a plenum to pass the air by the CPU.. GPU's were non-existent so air-flow for those don't exist in older cases... of if they did, again that plenum...

Mention cooling, I see these budget AIOs e.g -Cooler Master MasterLiquid Lite 120 -SilverStone PF120-ARGB -Corsair Hydro H45 -Deepcool GAMMAXX L120 V2 Any experience of these by forum members?
I might "invest" in one of these if I see need to. The Silverstone is currently on offer. Will try the build out on air 1st though to see all is working with load & OC temps.

Thanks, that seem to be a good choice, otoh it seem to be for LGA1156 only?
An AIO will dig my wallet for 50€, while a reasonably good&silent air CPU cooler is some 20€+. I found this on offer, 120mm fan, for max 150W TDP.
Especially the PST feature can be useful for noise reduction.

Oh yes you are right, that one doesn't have the AM4 mount, but below there was the option to choose it. I am not sure on your case dimensions so I choose the smallest I'm sure the Arctic would be ok, I am a massive Thermalright fanboy so I usually look to them first

Still on budget line, but I ordered a new PSU, M2 NVMe drive and a CPU cooler, just in case. This almost gets out of control

Looking forward to seeing some pictures of the finished build George Did you get a Gen 4 NVMe ?
Too cold out doors , good overclocking weather

Yes it is a gen 4 NVMe. Soo, ran into a couple of problems that I was not really expecting. - The Arctic Cooling CPU cooler is 2cm too high for this case, will try refund/swap for other model - there is no case fan header nearby the rear panel, existing case fan will need an extension or replacement - Windows 10 does not activate Other than that, it fired up on 1st try, no issues, the MSI Click bios is pretty cool. MB came with initial BIOS, so updated that to latest. This MB has Bluetooth, did not know Can be handy when transferring stuff via phone. WiFi worked right away when adding the network key.

welp, made an RMA of the CPU cooler and accepted, sent it back and made a new order for a bit smaller CPU cooler. Fixed the case cooling fan connectivity and installed a bigger fan.
Been going through hoops to get W10 to activate, have not had this much problems with W10 activation before. Be darned if I would have to buy another license/key. I have the license tied to my account, but seem somehow stuck with the old hardware, and now also this upgraded rig shows up as having a license tied to it, but as separate unit, Think that is the problem as it actually should be as replacement after upgrade.

Is it an OEM key? You want the pro version and you won't have this troubles.

you should be able to login to your MS account and remove that old device freeing up your license.

Have W10 Home activated now, all Ok. Can say, built in WiFi and PS/2 port saved it. Typing this from the rig now. Updates and tuning continues.

lol. Yeah, thought of the possibility using Pro, but figured I have not much use of it vs Home. I have Pro on another rig.

For normal day to day use, there's nothing wrong with Home. usability does everything one would need.
Main crutch of home is it can't join a domain and are relegated to a workgroup.

Now that key is tied to your board you probably could install pro.. I did that with my moms dell laptop by accident. I grabbed the iso from MS and used their tool to drop it on a usb. When I got to the important part I chose pro instead of home out of habit and it activated just fine..

Ive got the same copy of windows pro , same user account on 2 computers . One gaming , one overclocking rig .Find it easier getting into windows settings etc. ( security policy for instance). I hate win 10 interface and always use open shell.

yep. I can't stand the W10 Start Menu, feel handicapped when trying to use it. I always use Open Shell.

if you get used to what it's called within cortana or "start search" it isn't too bad. I'm a cmd guy. so hitting the windows key and typing what I want isn't too bad.

As the Arctic 34 CO cooler did not fit, returned it and took this Arctic 7 X instead, since it was in stock. RPM range says 300-2000, tested it with 100% CPU load, CPU at stock. Temp rises to 71,5 °C and RPM peaks at 2180. Noise level is acceptable also at peak RPM, so it does its job. As a temporary cooler had the Arctic Cooling Freezer 64 Pro, which has survived since the s939 days and now currently in use in one of my FX rigs. This one fits the AM4 mount as is too

with ref. to my R5 5600G, was wondering why the R5 3600 felt a bit sluggish. However then I finally chose the "extreme performance" profile in msi dragon center. Yay, it actually works(no Bsods or freezes so far, on W11). Makes cpu going at 4.2GHz now and then(no need to mess around in BIOS settings). Currently at W11 22H2 from late Feb. But still feel a bit uncomfortable to work with the W11 interface.

Heck yeah man. What GPU did you end up pairing with that 3600? Nothing at all wrong with a Ryzen 3600, still a very capable CPU. I love my Ryzen 3600 build.

^ an Asus GTX 750Ti GDDR5 2GB, don't really need a bigger card, plus, this one runs without a separate power feed. Have an RX480 sitting idle, but think it is a bit of a power hog.
