Someone is parting a system built around an abit KN9S motherboard. AM2 motherboard. Wonder if anyone here has tinkered with such a motherboard and is it any good, worth to spend time with? I see there is an abit KN9 Ultra also, what might be different?

I recon it will overclock according to the Abit site. Would imagine sub par compared to a Gigabyte motherboard.
If it's free or dirt cheap enough, your best with it is to go sub zero.

It is NF550. You really want to be at least in the 700 series chipsets for AM2 on up.

I see. Nforce 550, I never had one of those in the past.

Thanks shrimp. The top would then be X2 6400+.
I see there are socket AM2 Opterons (Opteron 1200-series, "Santa Ana"). Wonder if AM2 Opterons run in AM2 consumer motherboards, similar to when AMD made s939 Opterons?

Welcome. Top chip cross between FX-62 and 6400+ on that board yes.
I dont think AM2 Opteron will work in that board as they are based off Phenon architecture. AM2+.
