Freshly pulled from a HP PC I found at the local thrift store for 10 bucks. Memory was stripped, had a 320GB samsung 720 rpm HDD but everything else intact. I pulled the board and tossed the rest.
According to the Asus site this board could have a Q6600 or something cool, but I doubt it lol. I can only get so lucky.
Socket 775. I know it's OEM. DDR2.
Question? = Will something like clockgen work if I pull the PLL off the board for overclocking? Note: I am not looking for maximum clocks, but would like to tinker with it make sure it at least works.

SetFSB would probably be the one if the PLL is listed in it.

Some sources mention PLL IDT CV174CPAG.

Thanks guys. Will try and fire this up tonight, likely late. Will have to set up an OS for sure. I have nothing Intel to hot swap a drive to this platform. All my AMD stuff will probably blue screen like crazy lol.
This would be my first s775 setup... nothing glam, but hey now I'm finally there.
figure if it works, it's a good deal for 10 bucks. Just hoping there is a Q series chip. That would push me to actually buy a s775 board I could tweak and overclock with.....

You tossed the Samsung 320GB harddisk also?
For these types of tests I use a USB stick with either Win7 or W10 media created(depending on hardware) to make an initial install, with these "a bit" never hardware the install takes 20 minutes with a HDD paired, or 10 min with a SSD.
Even a DVD with Win7 SP1 install image goes fairly fast. Just remember to add+install IE11 (offline dl pack) immediately after or it'll choke on trying to update Win7 itself.

No I kept the drive. It's old and a bit noisy, but operational. I wouldn't put my trust into it.
Didn't get a chance to fire it up. I have work off tomorrow, should have time then. Maybe set up tonight and get running tomorrow. My only draw back is space right now. I'll have to move my gaming rig to the side for a few days maybe.

That board+CPU should cope with "BSEL" mod as well. Depending on what frequency the current CPU default goes with, a different BSEL may be needed.

Yay, got it up and running. Looks like a Conroe Pentium E2180... valid.x86.fr/avztk2Found a drive that had W7 Ultimate x32 installed. That made life easy. The board however was a pain in the butt to setup let alone get running. First it seemed to post just fine. Got a single dot in the upper right hand side of the screen. Wow ok, did the entire routine of clear cmos and everything... Turns out either my Intel SSD has died or the board just doesn't like it. OK, pulled the DELL OEM drive with W7 x32 and finally I can get into bios. Welp, battery completely dead. No biggie, throw one in. Yay, now settings are saved. So boot into windows. Begin set up. IE turn off updates and so forth. Well the screen went completely crazy. Seems the IGP is dead. So slap in the trusty legacy X1800 and now on the road to success. But the dang OS won't let me install the video driver. Gah, something isn't right with the OS. GPU-Z asks if I disabled plug and play services. Well, checked that, and it's enabled and running. sigh. video cards hate me. lol. To ensure less issues with memory I pulled out my questionably stable Patriot 6400 stick and slapped in the Geil 6400 cas 4. However the board boots in at 800Mhz, it runs 5-5-5 timings. This is my second stable post now. So I'm enjoying some wifi and posting the experience thus far. Now that it seems to be in good working order after repairing what ever changes the previous owner unknowingly had done, Gonna give it a whirl. Will try at least some kind of OC, be it hard mod or software. George. Thank you for that pin mod idea. Will further research this. I see mods for 1333 bus clocks, this one is 800. Not sure it would post that big of a jump without some extra v-core?

I think it should POST with stock v-core.
I have a E1400 , the E2180 sibling, in the shelf but have not found need for it yet.
Can't recall how much of a difference if running RAM dual channel vs. single on these.

OK very well then I will do a hard mod. Did some ClockGen overclocking. The south bridge gave up my hard drive last time I booted. So I've given it a rest for the past few days while been super busy. What would be the best way to do this? Solder a wire to the pins or conductive PEN/PENCIL mod? Those contacts are super small! Will this link at Overclockers put me on the right track? www.overclockers.com/intel-lga775-pad-modding/Was reading a different BSEL mod that seemed to have different frequencies. The one above is talking about 400 clocks or less?? Forgive me, I'm very very Intel tech limited. I've spent 99.8% of time with AMD overclocking, jfyi... EDIT: this link looks more accurate for the FSB my cpu has right? linustechtips.com/main/topic/767799-how-to-lga-775-bsel-mod-overclocking-with-tape/

The mods I used were for branching memory strap ratio's (go from 266 to 333 or 400Mhz) on CPU's that had a locked strap, another was to increase the vcore up another +0.075v.
Those were the only BSEL's I ever played with.
That overclockers link is great, better explanation than I ever had when I was doing this. I would let the pen dry over night. Last thing I wanted was to have some break off and end up in the socket, clean the hell out of the CPU before applying... just use that pen sparingly and you'll never have to buy another again.

It's very close to doing pin mods/ socket mods on s940 pin server AMD. It's a tad challenging when you have to do it on two sockets lol. But bending wires and setting them into holes is rather easy, this looks even easier if I'm just using a pen! Edit: 30$ pen.... Is there not a much cheaper way? lol. (I only paid 10$ for the entire rig)

look on ebay or amazon, just needs to be something conductive. you could use copper trace tape as well...

Oh for sure. I can get creative, that's not a problem. I just don't intend to spend more for a simple mod than I paid for it.... so 0-10$ would be the budget for this mod lol. (not 100% serious here, the pen would do for lots of mods!!)

OK so would THIS be the mod I'd need to do on this particular chip I have?

valid.x86.fr/avztk2that cpu is what I have and would like to mod. I feel it would be a good start. Let me ask please, is the pen mod permanent? Or can I "erase" the lines with somewhat ease to try a different BSEL setting?

Post by Macsbeach98 on May 22, 2019 0:54:20 GMT -5
You should only have to do the inner line in that pic and put a dot of tape over the pad closest to the notch if that makes it easier.

Or can I "erase" the lines with somewhat ease to try a different BSEL setting? you can carefully scratch off the silver pen with a sharp knife. I've done it to "un-Mod" a CPU and the CPU was fine after.
once scraped off, clean with Isopropanol and you'll never know it was there

Gotcha Pete, thanks for the tip.
Thank you Vin, pretty much what I was hoping for just in case.
I hope to try this mod come sunday or monday as I get 2 days off in a row!! yay me!

Yea, didn't get to this exactly on time, but this is kind of challenging for me. I can't see the pads!! they almost start blending together.... So bought some cheaters at the walmart. A magnifying class wasn't cutting it, don't really have a steady third hand.....
Well any rate. waiting for pen to arrive. I tried the old pencil trick, but accomplished nothing. Umm ok pull the cpu again and dropped it into the socket. For crying out loud... now messing with a couple of contacts with just slight bends to them trying to straighten out right now as I type this. Confident in an easy repair. will be good as new.
Now I know why I shouldn't own Intel hardware lol. Have to be a lot more careful!!!

Haha Vin. Got a pretty steady hand, but the tape for a good clean line is an excellent idea.

One more question....
Is the stock cooler going to be ok at 3.33Ghz? I'm not sure if I have a bracket unless my old thermal take has the holes....

I think with a Q6600 you might be pushing it.
