The Choke is the little coil thingy. Chokes (Inductors) come in different varieties that is an open air choke wound around a Ferrite donut. The 3 square cubes next to the VRM heatsinks with R60 on them are also chokes they are enclosed but are wire wound on a ferrite core. Basically chokes will block AC but allow DC to pass freely voltages spikes are absorbed into the ferrite core. Capacitors on the other hand block DC but allow AC to pass they usually pass spikes off to ground and hold a charge in case of a low spike. They both work together to remove spikes and supply smooth DC voltage from the Mosfets in the constantly changing current load of the Device i.e. CPU

ah ok pete i was looking at the black ones with r60 on it, but im guessing scotty was meaning the choke near that swollen cap appears to be a bit browner in the greeny colour on the ferrite donut thing than the others

posting this up wasnt a waste of time as i see it, ive learnt a few more things, i didnt know those ferrite rings were chokes and also to look more carefully at the caps and for discolouration on anything anywhere if someone replaced the swollen cap/s and burnt ferrite choke it probably would turn out to be a cracker of a board for them i reckon this would be right up young mistones alley but think the postage to poland like it is to here would be the killer for him, he loves replacing parts caps etc and repairing this kind of stuff, im pretty sure he hasnt got and ultra D in his collection, i spoke to him the other day for a yak in skype, hes chaffing at the bit to get back into overclocking but he broke his arm so hes out of action for a bit, he reckons its too hard to type 1 handed, but ive seen him come into the forum to have a sniff around with whats been happening

No, it wasn't a waste of time at all. Still a decent price for a fixer upper. I'm a little more picky than the average guy too. I go over e-bay pics with a fine tooth comb. Been burned once too many times.

There are advantages and disadvatages to X48 verses P45 both have their good traits depends what you want to do with them.

There are advantages and disadvatages to X48 verses P45 both have their good traits depends what you want to do with them. i dont know the difference pete to be honest I always thought that P45's were always better overall boards. CPU compatibility was better, bios support was well rounded... X48's were for newer CPU's only and depending on the manufacturer could be very temperamental. if I recall correctly X48's were released a year or so after X58/1366 platform so I thought it was released to use up old stock on 775 components and CPU's. if you wanted to get in to an x48 board, I remember the Foxconn X48 BlackOps board was the one to get, don't know why that one pops out in my head atm. Vin EDIT: Correction. of course the Asus Rampage X48 was #1 by a longshot, then Asus Formula, then Asus P5E, then the Foxconn... I still remember the Foxconn being a grail for some reason.

All the X48 boards come with the ICH9R southbridge the good P45 boards come with the ICH10R. It all depends what you want to do and what you are going to run in them. For 45nm Core 2 Quad you cant go past the Gigabyte EP45-UD3P but for anything else there are better options.
One board I would like to try is the Biostar TpowerI45 they are good for highFSB. Kotori uses one.
