As I mentioned in another thread I have just gotten around to playing with this platform and one thing I would really like to know about is RAM/QPI voltage. I have the R3E and I set the XMP for some 2000 CL8 this resulted in a cryptic warning from the board about voltage over 1.65V could damage/kill the CPU. Now I'm uncertain as to my limits. I ran that CB 11 which is in the single core competition but needed almost 1.4V for the QPI to keep the RAM from crashing at that speed. Guess what I really want to know is just how dangerous this can be and should I push it any further on ambient. I'm assuming that lower temps "should" make that voltage window a bit bigger.

Thanks for the link and yes I had already perused that thread. He mentioned 1.375V and no losses, guess I'm just trying to figure out where the danger zone is. More often than not the mobo errs on the side of caution as I'm sure we all have seen voltages in the red.

I've pushed as much as 1.7v on my memory. My gear lived. depending on my QPI clock I have pushed as far as 1.55v on QPI and core. These x58 CPU's are hard to cool, even with my AC Chiller I had issues keeping the temps down.
what CPU are you running?

I have a couple 980Xs a 920.950,960 and an X5650. Will like get some more Xeons, they seem pretty reasonable price wise hopefully some of the unlocked W series
Just tested the two 980Xs one of them is definitely finding a new home. Both tested at 200 BCLK X 21 for 4200 and memory at default 1333 test was CB R15 Sample #1 1.35V Sample #2 1.23125V
#1 wouldn't even boot Windows until I was over 1.325V

The Pat Hypers I use have been 1.72v up to a high of 1.80v from day one. The only advice followed no less than 0.5v difference between vdimm/OPI. Never lost a CPU kill boards though!

SO what I take from that is if RAM is 1.7 volts I need to keep QPI/RAM voltage at 1.2 or higher? What you said sounds like it should always be below 1.2V

if vdimm is at 1.7, then QPI must be at 1.2 or higher. if below, it'll unstable.

What Vin is saying, actually some talk as to why CPUs were dying when the spread became to great but that's my memory. I Generally run in the mid 1.3s to mid 1.4s depending on chip, spent a bunch of time on water back when X58 had a chance at 3D

I'm at 1.69v on the ram and I leave my QPI/Vtt on auto.

OK, thanks. Seems I have some wiggle room as long as I remain reasonable it should be fine. I thought I could get 2100 out of the RAM but wasn't sure if I should add much more voltage still at 1.65V when I get the chance I'll swap CPUs again and play some more.

I have found that the voltage curve raises pretty quickly once I pass 4.5 GHz or so. I tried even with the cold loop for 5.0 but I think the CPU still gets too hot. I had to let it sit overnight for the loop to chill again then made a run this AM at 4.9, 1.475V. And the cold made the temp sensor go nuts was reporting 249°C.

Voltage curve raises pretty quickly after 4.2 Yes, they get hot quick. Good chip you got.

4.9 @ 1.468 Wow, such clocks on a pretty low voltage ! Nice chip You got !

That is a great chip for that voltage.
getting higher than 4000Mhz on NB and/or 1000Mhz on Memory is tough on X58 imo. once you hit one of those walls, it's hard to go any higher. Those are usually your BSOD's

Those have been end points for me as well. on many boards you don't have a lower multi to use. on my EVGA e770 I do, but it takes a ton a tweaking even with that to get higher clocks and sometimes I have found that the gain wasn't worth the loss of either NB or Mem.

Thanks guys, I did know it was better than the other but as I said still spreading my wings on this set-up. Managed to get 4240 NB and 2120 RAM out of it which is repeatable. Not sure If I can do all cores like this yet

Took me a while to find one and still cost $200 CDN for board 3x4 ram and an X5650 I paid that much for my Evga X58 Classified 3 by itself so I think you got a good deal for that. Evga Classified, Asus Rampage & high end Gigabyte boards are all top tier and they'll all do the same pretty much.

So it's You why it can't be bought any hypers ! Actually good older ddr3 seems completely vanished at here. I searching from time to time through some of local sale sites. I wish I found Bbse and hyper sticks of any producer or type or colour but not seen any... (( I was doin an 1600c9 3x2 hyperx blu trikit with with pretty good mid level ic's inside. Base. Or can use psc's with uses the one still living stick from my Ripjaws 1600c7 one and put it next to my Geils. Luckily they doin very fine without any issues even first boot but higher settings still. Just I really don't like psc any older stuff than like 1150 or maybe with Ivy bridge cpus can be accepltable. But there are much better 2gb sticks exists. Just not here, here isn't a single one shown up. Sometimes good types kits seen. But believe it or not, I find about 10 times a good looking kit but there were always the worst type of that type of memorys. kits made powerchip, that early samsung some rev a or b or donno. Shit as shit... Not clock well but hates tight timings even... Another base kit was the best I've found in the last year.. Bbse kit is waht I really want to ! I remember there were so many in those sites a few years earlier how can happened to disappeared completely ? Are they used to die random ? I haven't hear any issues around bbses... (( Or as a last chance before starts to rage maybe I can try to be friends with pscs. Try to look after some how be the memorys friend knowhow. I like psc but not old stuffs. However ther is one thing my psc is so good. They are exists while any others can do the same now. :S

I also have a few kits of 2x2GB Flare, Pi and Doms. Those last two G.Skill kits are sought after as well great for higher speed/newer DDR3 systems or AMD APUs It was one of those bundles I thought was way too cheap to pass up. The 980X and the three mem kits covered the asking price the rest were just extras to me

Now send me those sticks!"
I miss those days but they don't really have to be over, I'm sure sooner or later we'll have another great comp here. Benching season for ambient is all but over now and would have to go subzero to get anything done until October comes along and even then could be iffy.

My good DDR3 sticks are PSC chipped and are either Ripjaws or PI sticks (CL6 8-6-24). In fact I have two sets of Ripjaws with those specs but only one is PSC, the other is some other crap that won't clock nearly as high.
