Question; are s1151 & 1151-v2 the same socket?
Cant find a clear answer. Every where I looked it lists for example i7 8700 as a 1151 but at Bot they list it as 1151-v2
So in short; Can I put an i7 8700 in a Maximus IX Apex?

With BIOS mods if the board is a Z270, Z370 good to go, my understanding.

To clarify a little most of what I've looked at has been with Asrock boards one of which I have. Think there is a pad mod needed also but the early post I read I can't remember if was talked about.

Yep they need a mod and the main reason a lot of them mod them is because you cant run XP on a z370 board. For Apex IX Z270 you have to solder a wire link on and a special bios I dont know about a mod for Asus Z170 Not sure what you have to do for Asrock Z170 mOCF but I do know they have them working with 8700k.

So let me see IF I understand it; IF I want to run Win XP I would have to MOD my board? Other wise I CAN run it on Win-7 & 10 on my Maximus ix apex... Correct?

They are not the same, 1151v2 (z370/390) has more pins dedicated to VCC and VSS. That said you can run an 8700K or 9900K just fine in the older 1151 (z170/270) provided you have the proper bios and have done any board mods needed. The MOCF for example simply needs one of the bios' from Nick and T_SKT_OCC_1 connected to ground (between the first and second pcie slot). The full-sized OCF works also. Check this out for the apex. community.hwbot.org/topic/184577-asus-maximus-ix-apex-and-coffee-lake-cpus/

Thanx for the info. Lets say I decided to go the rout of MODDing to be able to run 8700; what if any affects would the mod have if I wanted to pop in say my 7700KK? Or do I need to remove the MODs to run it?

One thing to note is that HT doesn't work with the 6/8C chips I think, there might've been a bios to fix that but I'm not sure. I have an MOCF so I'm not familiar with the Apex and it's mods. Make sure to read that hwbot thread fully.

Obviously a good MOCF/OCF is the thing to look for. Should be able to find a OCF like I did, a MOCF will be harder to come by but they are out there somewhere.
If I could have goten a MOCF thats what I would have gone with but there was nothing but the OCF around to get so...... Got it.
