Continuing on with some further updates to my main 2 channel stereo rig I noticed that my Oppo UDP-205 universal disc player also has some built in streaming capabilities. The player uses dual ESS Sabre 9038Pro DACs, one for decoding 7.1 muti channel sound and the other dedicated to 2 channel stereo sound. It is also a Roon ready device. I decided it was time to start exploring the Hi-Res digital streaming trend that has been going on now for the past ~10/15 years and I purchased a small Intel NUC barebones unit (NUC10i5FNHN) to make a dedicated Roon Optimized Core Kit (ROCK) streaming server. It runs off a Roon modified Linux kernel. I installed a 2x8GB 2666C19 G.Skill SO-DIMM memory kit and the ROCK sever software boots/runs on a WD Black 256GB NVME SSD. It also has a 2.5" 500GB Samsung 860 EVO SSD for music storage although I might upgrade that to a larger capacity SSD in the future. I've hooked up my OPPO UDP via ethernet and have it now connected to the Roon Core server, and I've also installed the front end Roon software program/app on my main PC setup as well as on my iPhone and MacBook Air. I'm streaming "Qobuz" for its music data base catalog and I may also try a trial of the "Tidal" service to compare between the two. Tidal and Qobuz both offer streaming content of Hi-Res music in addition to regular CD quality (16-bit 44.1kHz) music. The Roon software will also stream music to the two small Audio Pro wireless network speakers that I have setup up in our kitchen/breakfast room. Streaming some Joe Satriani today...

I'm starting to think you're more of an audio geek than I. That's a sweet setup. I haven't payed much attention to digital audio, even in FLAC form.

I'm starting to think you're more of an audio geek than I. That's a sweet setup. I haven't payed much attention to digital audio, even in FLAC form. Vin Analog records have become somewhat of niche segment in audio. Phones, tablets, computers, YouTube, Spotify, Apple/iTunes, Amazon and all the other streaming venues runs via digital audio files. Some younger audio consumers now run all digital setups with headphones and a small DAC or even powered wireless audio speakers. Tidal runs "MQA" compression files that can unpack Hi Res up to 24-bit 192kHz. Qobuz streams Hi Res with FLAC files also up to 24-bit 192kHz. However, CD quality 16-bit 44.1kHz is the nominal high quality standard for both services. The Hi-Res offerings vary quite a bit on both Tidal/Qobuz and there is still plenty of music that isn't available in Hi Res. Still Hi Res doesn't fix an original poor quality production process in the studio. Only my main stereo rig with the Oppo DAC can run the Hi Res. My other Wireless (kitchen) speakers are limited via Airplay to CD quality. My PC and iPhone also don't have separate USB DACs to handle Hi Res files (and are down converted). Sample Hi Res Tidal: Sample Hi Res Qobuz:
