I recently got a new addition to my 2-channel music setup (a new amp). I've been revisiting and listening to a bunch of my old records and CDs from my collection. Some Warren Zevon...

That's an awesome setup. Nice Speakers, replacing just the one driver didn't affect the audio?
How is that Mac amp, what did it replace?
Lastly, what kind of pre-amp is that? Vin

Lastly, what kind of pre-amp is that? Vin I started to get interested in Hi-Fi audio back when I was in high school and college and I started building out my system by acquiring a decent front end turntable. (Oracle Alexandria) linkAfter college I got the Mission 780 Argonaut Mk. I speakers ( link) which I ran along with a small Mission Cyrus 2 Integrated Amp. After a few years had gone by and probably due to over driving the small Cyrus 2 Amp I ended up needing to replace one of the drivers in the 780 which were then still under warranty. The audio dealer told me the Mission driver that was the best replacement for my speaker would be one from the 780 Argonaut Mk. II ( link) which has a different printed graphic on the inverted dust cap and also has woofer cabinet mounting holes oriented in a slightly different position vs. the original Mk. 1 speakers. Around 1990 when the driver was replaced I also upgraded my integrated amp to separates: the Adcom GFP-565 Pre-Amp ( link) along with an Adcom GFA-555 Mk.II Amp. My GFA 555 Mk. II amp died ~ 5(+) years back and for the last few years I was running my system with a Sony receiver (STR DA777ES) but that unit was recently moved upstairs to the family room (TV/Audio system) due to another long used receiver that had also recently died. The Disc player is an OPPO UDP-205 ( link) and I also have an old Yamaha Tuner (T-85) that is still working well. I haven't had this McIntosh amplifier up and running for very long but I'm enjoying it very much so far.

Nice, I'm sure that Sony amp didn't drive those speakers all that well. though I'm sure it did ok at low volume. I've never been in the market for Mac's. (House, wife and kids spend my $$$) but I've never heard a setup that made me go "Wow that's worth the 4-5digit value for that". It's all in the setup, and the people that I knew that had them, only had them for status and actually didn't setup the rooms properly, or the rooms were too big or too small... it's all about balance and sound dampening... they didn't get it... they also bought in to the 1m Silver braided directional wire (err.. what.. Directional wire ) I get the resistance thing... but you lost me at directional.. these didn't have a shield... your audio space looks similar to mine. function over form... I'd love to hear it one day. Vin

I'd love to hear it one day. Vin I consider the Sony STR-DA777ES to be a "sleeper/under the radar" type of unit.( link)( link) It was/is a good 5 channel AV receiver but I always thought that one of its strengths was how it did analog 2-channel audio. It was actually my 2nd unit that I bought used off of Craig's List as a backup to my original 777ES unit that I bought back in 1999. McIntosh stuff is expensive but the quality of their products is without question. Made in the US by Americans in Binghamton, NY and not coming out of some manufacturing plant in China. Don't get me wrong I think that China can make a very high quality product not to mention plenty that are made to a lower and more cost effective price points but I have little doubt that the McIntosh amp will be able to run strong for the next 20/25+ years and if it ever should need some type of service that it will still be available long after the original warranty has expired. The amp is very heavy and definitely a two person job to get packed up, boxed, moved around and unpacked. I bought it used and in great condition locally here in Atlanta off of "Audiogon/US Audio Mart" from a doctor who was liquidating his entire system. Hi-Fi was one of his interests and he was very knowledgeable and experienced with more than 20+ years of buying/selling various audio products in his pursuit of Audio. I also agree with you that setup and room interactions are very important to getting good sound out of your system. Room size, shape, hard reflective surfaces vs. soft absorptive ones, furniture, carpeting/rugs can all affect sound in a room. Moving a speaker's placement can very well have a greater affect on the sound then changing out interconnects and or speaker wire. The quality of the sound source, front end delivery, electronics, and speakers along with proper room setup all need to (hopefully) be working together in a complementary manner. My computer room is located in the basement of my house and is rectangular shaped (~25' long by 18' wide). As far as "function over form"... My room over the years has slowly become a rather disorganized clutter/mess so I'm now working on getting it cleaned up and organized! These Mission speakers have pretty good base response (spec'd 30Hz-20KHz) but they do drop off some in dB output in the lower bass region. I also noticed that the McIntosh amplifier has a set of line level outputs on the back. I actually had a spare 15" sub-woofer that was boxed up and placed in the storeroom of our basement when we first moved into this house. It is now kind of old and I'm sure there are better ones out there but I figured I should get it out and unpacked to see if I can successfully integrate some additional lower bass response to the 780 Argonauts. This is a WIP... Actually, I'm still working on trying to improve the sound of the whole system to be more optimized/integrated with the room.

I love your space. don't change a thing except for a few things on the floor.. move some of the expensive/hard-to-replace stuff out of the walking paths... lol. a good friend of mine has a set of the Mission Renaissance (single 8", but with those same stands) and those sound great. he found a second set and is running the pair of a Sansui (can't remember if it's the 7900 or 11000). Sounds awesome... I like that sub. Old is fine. just hope the response time matches the rest. That's usually the issue that I've experienced. It's just a few ms behind the rest and the overall sound then seems muddy on the low end. if you have that issue, see if you can move the output to the pre-amp. could save those few ms. Vin
Still the same gear, but moved the speakers around. this is an odd room, similar to yours, but mine is ~11" wide by ~30' long... speaker placement has been challenging...
for my gear... currently running 2 sets of Sound Dynamics R818's, early 80's LXI AM4023 (I believe it's a class A amp... Sears re-branded Sherwood AD2220) re-capped and restored and lastly a Technics SL-1200MK2 restored with an Ortofon 2M Blue... to me the setup sounds amazing.
I have old Nikko (Alpha 450 with Beta 20 and 30 preamps and everything else you need to fill a full rack), Kenwood and Pioneer stuff here as well.. I'll switch it around and be happy for a bit.. but every time I put that big-little amp back I'm just blown away all over again.

A good friend of mine has a set of the Mission Renaissance (single 8", but with those same stands) and those sound great. My first exposure to Mission speakers was probably back in the late 70's (~79?) when I went and demonstrated a pair of the 770's in an audio store in Chicago. I remember really liking them which probably influenced me into looking at that brand again about 5/6 years later. Tonight I discovered that Mission is bringing out a new retro version of the 770 updated with the latest speaker component tech. ( link) The price is 3500 (GBP £) ~ $4400 and they come with matching stands. Here is a vid where the current Mission designer talks about the new speakers: New 770 speaker review:

Nice, thanks for posting that, I'll sent it to my buddy... just realized that his renaissance speakers are a different version of the 737 (but the 737R) looking them up I found a set of 770MK1's in tiger wood in Toronto (2hrs away)... if I was in the market the price is ok for these. www.kijiji.ca/v-view-details.html?adId=1615112338

I really like that drummer.
Edit: Dam, Phil Collins is back there playing drums on this one. God Bless him. I wish him the best. He was my all-time favorite drummer. I always modeled my playing after him.

Went with the album like the background vocals Not Covers just same title Metal Bluegrass? What I've collected for the third time. Wife's cats liked using them as a scratching post, (few arguments over it!!!!) but they all play without problem

Well after ~ 35/36 years... I upgraded my speakers to something from today's current generation. The Spatial Audio M4 Sapphire a 2-way design with open baffle 12" woofers (di-polar radiation). Earlier today I was listening to Elton John's Goodbye Yellow Brick Road album. I'm still working on my cluttered/messy room. It has been a slow tough slog as I have way too much crap that needs to be purged. I think I'd like to do some room treatment for audio and get some bass traps and diffusers placed in the corners and up on the walls. Video link to the speaker designer Clayton Shaw talking about open baffle speaker design:

Those are super nice. Are they what you expected? Vin I had heard and listened previously to some (di-pole) electrostatic panel type speakers a few times in the past... Quad, Martin-Logan, and Magnepan (Magneplanar), but I don't ever recall listening to any type of dynamic cone open baffle speakers before. As far as my expectations... I really didn't know very much about this speaker before last Friday so I guess I was just wanting them to sound good in my room and be a nice solid improvement over my old Mission Argonauts. I actually bought the M4's from the same guy who previously sold me my MC312 amplifier. He had placed an order for these late last fall and they were on backorder. They have a 4/25/22 manufacture date and he had only recently received them and had barely broken them in while comparing them to his "modified" Klipsch Cornwall IV speakers. I did some research and reading up on Spatial Acoustics for a good portion of Friday while I contemplated the idea of getting a new set of speakers. On Saturday morning I decided to call him up and arranged to go over to his house for a brief audition. When I was there the two things I wanted to first check on was the quality/tonality of the high frequency tweeter and of course the open baffle bass. I only got to listen to them for about 45 min. but they sounded fine in his basement room setting. I just decided then and there the time was right for new speakers and I told him I would buy them. They are kind of expensive but he gave me a very fair (discounted) deal for a like new/mint condition set of speakers. plus no tax and no shipping fees. After I brought them home and set them up in my room I can clearly hear the benefits of the open baffle bass design and the improved room interactions. Tweeter design and implementation has also easily improved over the decades since the old Missions were made.

That's awesome... and sometimes.. you just have to spoil yourself and buy nice things... your setup looks great. I'm sure it sounds awesome as well.
I'm happy you like them.
I'm familiar with Martin-Logans (Electromotion gear). They have some odd stuff and I just could never appreciate the tones from them.

Vin Spatial Audio has three versions of this speaker, the M6, M4, and M3 with the primary difference being the size of the woofers for matching and bass loading/interactions with three different overall room size types... small, medium and large. I think of my room as being towards medium/large in size (~18"W x ~25"L x ~8"H). Here is a link to a YouTube reviewer (Ron from New Record Day) on my speaker's big brother the M3 Sapphire:

I was listening to some Santana today.
It had been quite some time since I'd played this CD and I had kind of forgotten about this cut featuring Eric Clapton.
