So I decided to update my file server along with my newer HTPC server...
So with my i7-980x, 24GB of ram. It's running Win 7-64bit and that's the front end that's used for the HTPC. This is what the user sees and interfaces with...
Then I'm running VMWare Workstation v10 and VM my servers... I'd been using 2 VM's in tendem.(Windows Server 2008R2 and Windows Server for Small Business 2011) it wasn't 1 server due to time and business evolution..
So now I'm taking the time. I pulled in my Server OS's and realized that I own a license of Windows Server 2012... us canucks lost access to Technet some years ago so that's the newest I own, (I pulled everything I could before the deadline...) forgot I had it... it's been awile...
but I've always wanted to try a proper linux server. either terminal based or preferably a GUI based system.... I've seen both with great success in the wild.. and I've always wanted to break free of the M$ chains.....
so I started this morning and had 2 OS's.. (Win Server 2012 and Ubuntu Server 18.04)...
The challenge and verification of validity...... Setup a server of each in a VM, hardware config all being equal in both VM's... Then setup 5 users, each a home folder with proper permissions, a global sharing folder for all the users, make some folders visible over the share per user logged in... have the shares work per user...
Started with Win Server 2012.. layout and menu is extremely different than 2008/2011 that I'm used too.. Had to google a bit to setup the domain, Active Directory, Setup Users and Shares... everything is in new places, menus are different... but I managed.. after about 2.5 hours. my mission was completed and everything is working...
Then start on Ubuntu Server 18.04... I might get hate here.. I've always liked ubuntu desktop, there is probably a better distro for a file sharing server... I used desktop for a few years back in the day and it did everything I needed it to do.. I was hoping for a similar success with the updated server version...
BOY WAS I WRONG... I'm now sitting at 5+ hours in... I've had to restart a few times because of the login boot-loop issue that is plaguing since v8.. I went through nearly 10 tutorials and none (I MEAN NONE) worked to resolve that issue.. restart, try a new GUI... same, restart, another GUI... success... with Mate... Holy fuck.. 2 hours at this point... every GUI login-loop was for all different reasons and the numerous errors I couldn't get a resolution on... happy Mate finally worked... more bloated than I would had liked. but everything looks there....
ok.. moving on... setup samba... google... google.. google... really, in 2018 no GUI to set this up, I understand install... but even to configure?... ok... terminal setup... moving on... setup a share update smb.conf... setup a few user shares.. update smb.conf.... really.. I have to manually config smb.conf for every share and every user...
So.. I'm not giving up yet.. I've read a bunch of tutorials.. I'm convinced that Google is messing with me and not directing me right... I have a hard time believing that in 2018 that Linux is this manual... esp. as my past experience wasn't so...
feel free to yell at me... I'm open to a better linux server app... but I need SMB for windows users, I'd like to setup a Plex server as well.. also eventually a torrent search and download... 12 threads and 24GB of ram, I want this to be an everything box...
