I remember that thread, I'm thinking more Bios level.
Also the CPU that being compared too is selling for 6x the amount of this one... so could be a good score.

The only thing you may need to do in bios on some boards is maybe add microcode for a specific cpu.
Also you must keep in mind, the way that seller and many others are selling those xeons now, The mod is welded on so if you wanted to run 2 of em in a dual socket 771 board you can NOT. Obviously not every one runs dual 771, so those that do run dualies are the ones that need to keep that in mind.

S771 X5482 locked multi, comparing to an unlocked CPU far reach, actually has as rather low multi as it uses a 400 FSB as I remember. The ones being sold don't require the adapter as they have been modified by the seller to work in a S775 MB

Running a X5462 in this machine for now, all I had to do is get the mod sticker in place and it was ready to go. Runs the bus up high as said but otherwise it's a pretty good chip.

My work box was an HP WS with 2 X5482s up till I retired, ran a little hot.

Nope, depends on the chip and with these the multi is locked. If not mistaken here it has to say "Extreme" on the lid for it to be that way.

Yes as mentioned you need the sticker mod (like 1$ on ebay) and then need to modify the notches on the CPU or just cut the notches out of the actual socket on the motherboard. That's what I did with an LGA 771 x5470. It would run a 1600Mhz FSB and for the most part was better than my Q9550. Although it ran a little bit warmer. My next purchase is going to be a core 2 quad extreme X6850 due to the unlocked multi. ThrottleStop works great on the extreme processors if your motherboard lacks overclocking features.
As for BIOS detection you may (or may not) need the microcode updates. IIRC there is a WIKI site detailing a number of xeons tested with retail mobos somewhere out there in internet land.
And EDIT: The X5470 is actually a better overclocker than the x5482 due to the 10X multi. You can easily run it at 1600Mhz FSB for a clock speed of 4.0Ghz vs 3.2 for the X5482. Unless you decide to go with FSB overclocking.
