I've been watching/using this socket almost from release and have never really played much with the uncore/NB much generally leaving the setting on auto. Most of the Xeons generally would produce something around 3.6-3.9 range with some in the 4.0-4.2 range and low end ones around 3.2 and as long as I thought I was doing well never cared. Recently finally got to the i7 cpus and noticed auto was giving me low end Xeon settings on some of the higher end cpus so started playing. First image 4 different uncore/NB settings all other settings the same, the next setting above the 4th image cleared my BIOS to default so end of test. Comparing the old Everest to the new ADIA64, same program different owners and new coding.

I always try the higher Uncore setting sometimes when the cpu is on the edge of speed you have to drop it down to gain stability. It does make a difference. The difference in the 2 programs.

The difference between the programs shocked me also!!!
Added: Guess the newer one uses multi thread older one single thread. Have to run single thread and see.

I've never properly understood the Uncore settings. I've never thought it to be like a NB per-say, it isn't that straight forward. well at least to me. so I'd had always left them on Auto. the times I did play with it I got near instant instability and putting it on Auto was always an easy bet.
on the XEON's I have, I don't think there is any adjustment on uncore, for those, it-is-what-it-is. clock up FSB and UnCore goes up.
but seeing this... I was leaving some score on the table.
so what order did you go about clocking that up? CPU/Ram/UnCore? CPU/UnCore/Ram?
and is there a way to "bin" the uncore as you would a CPU to give you an idea of that chips upper area? Voltage is also a question... how high is too high?
sorry for all the questions, you brought up an item I know I am very weak on.

Single thread on Aida64, a lot closer but still a big deference.

on that last one, is that at 8x uncore?

Sorry don't know the multi but it is set to the same as the compare image I posted earlier.
Vin, you posted while I was posting the last post.
What I use to start and probably more than I need, but lazy, may need to adjust the higher voltage settings for cooling type.
Multi highest available or 25 Bclk = 200 PCIE = 107 (Voodoo setting probably don't help) Memory = 2000 UCLK Freq = Auto
CPU Voltage = 1.575v CPU PLL Voltage = Auto OPI/DRAM Core Voltage = 1.575v (NB) IOH Voltage = 1.275v IOH PCIE Voltage = Auto ICH Voltage = 1.195v ICH PCIE Voltage = Auto DRAM Bus Voltage 1.765v
Most everything I've used posted, maybe a little more vcore to make Windows, although some of the x55xx's didn't like the 200 Bclk and had to drop down to 1600 on the RAM. Never really touch the other voltages all freq increases rely on vcore at this point. Your right the lower end Xeons only work at one setting on RAM and Uncore no matter what you set in BIOS. As for Uncore not really a lot of knowledge there but from what I have tested 3.8 generally is doable with out a lot of adjustments and some cpus have no problem up to around 4.2. The i7 I posted with pretty good with single thread with a high uncore but goes south fast with heavy multi tasking benches and higher core freq.

that 1.5v, is that on air, water or your SS?

Vcore=Chiller (2c for these tests), NB=Air but it's a 10" table top fan pointed straight at the board from the top.

This is interesting good thread Brad. I have always read that uncore helped. I cant quote any figures though I havent had 1366 out since winning challenger with it last year. Also I have only got a 980X and few bloomfields 920, 930, and 950 I would like a 965X quad though.

Correction, to old school MB and RAM air cooled, NB chiller keep forgetting it's in the CPU.
The 965 I've got not to happy with just a little over 4.4 in wPrime 1024 in fact only sud'd for wPrime but looking a little closer got a few LN2, Dice & SS below and only one H20 above. As far as I can tell only D0s were ES looking through the higher scores. Personally a big waste of the Extreme name.

Thats good to know I thought they would of gone better. Real cold does make them look better and good sample might be worth some good points?
