here i am again; not sure iof this belongs in "motherboards", but feel free to move it if that's appropriate and possible
anyways, my venerable giga board is flakey, but only on cold boot
it's been that way intermittently but not frequently for quite some time, which improved by being more generous with vdimm to the 2x8 ddr3 sticks running 2133 @ 10-12-12-31 1t, that are listed as 2400 @ 11-13-13-31 2t at 1.65v
volts are 1.608 per hwinfo64
current config, a lazy overclock without formal stress testing, but no bluescreens whatsoever :
i5-2600k 4.2ghz @1.24v / megahalems / gigabyte z77-d3h / samsung 850 evo 250 (and 1tb toshiba) / 2x8gb G.Skill ares @ 2133 cl10 / asus xonar d2 + klipsch promedia ultra 2.0 + ath ad700 / Lian Li PC-A17B & corsair hx750i & noctua fans / gigabyte gtx760 oc @ 1225 / dell u2515h
the 2600k is a recent addition (hand-me-down from a mate)' previously i had the long loved 2500k, at pretty much the same settings, and occasional boot weirdness too
so, on many recent occasions, the computer start up is :
noises / no beeps or flash screen or anything (hmmm... no mobo speaker - i might try that as troubleshooting) / reboot to "uefi bios" at the top of the screen, but no other writing > restarts spontaneously
sometimes it will invoke dual bios and go through a reload, sometimes it will just reboot and then start windows, and more recently i have gotten smart and used f12 to provoke a boot into the ssd via the options, which it happily does if i can get up the options
only other thing is the ssd is sata3, but is actually an evo 850 msata in a generic chinese adapter running via a sata3 port, as the msata on the z77 won't go faster than sata2, and where's the fun in that ?
so, maybe that's the problem ?
i will reset the boot order and see if the 128gb (spare) ssd is more routinely able to fire up
the psu is a corsair - after my hx650 serendipitously started making fan noises a few weeks short of its 7 years of warranty, and the cost of return postage gained me a spanking new hx750i, only a few months ago... which i leave to do its stuff without adjusting all the shiz the "i" allows
so, does all this sound like bios ?
i have reflashed it but it's still temperamental and i'm not keen on flashing what might be sick hardware
worse case scenario, i also have an asrock p67 extreme4 which is known to have 2 ram slots dodgy, but as my pair of 2x8 can use the good ones, it's less problematic... but rebuilding the whole machine is a major p.i.t.a., and the asrock is older than the z77, but had the 2600k in it
the bios screen in asrock are whack anyway, as a man who is far too used to giga, and at a pinch, asus
hmm... got an asus p68 mini too, but mr 15 will be unimpressed if i take it (the 2500k is happy in it, and he's unlikely to relinquish ownership without a fight)
thanks for any ideas
