Snow still hasn't hit here in Atlantic Canada, it has been single-digits for the past month though which sucks because of the humidity sticking around instead of freezing.

Just heard you got hit hard by the weather even with casualties. Hope all of you are safe. It's been snowing for three days here, only half a meter of snow at my place but more than a meter nearby (more than three feet that is).

@mr. Scott: We can get some pretty high amounts of snow here around Lake Michigan. But you guys get the kind of stuff that nightmares are made of. Scary shit.

Yep, Chicago doesn't get hit hard too often any more. 30 years ago it seemed more often and more of it. Kids got lucky for a white Christmas this year I think. We'll be back in the 40s (f) in a week haha.
Still a long way to go yet. It's almost January.... then February, we should be perma-cold.

oh my! Got this photo from a local newspaper over here, apparently taken from the NY Buffalo area.
Over here its been freezing too, cold gusts. But the worst thing is the icy roads, hell, feels like have to wear a helmet, ski glasses and boots with studs to just walk a bit around the neighborhood. Emergency care is very occupied.

Just heard you got hit hard by the weather even with casualties. . That weather was courtesy of the Siberian Express. You get shit like this all the time. We don't....at least not to this extreme. It's not the snow, it's the cold and wind.

This is our snow making machine. This thing is a bitch!
When this thing gets churned up it sets off all the rest of the lakes like a domino effect.
Edit: when the winds whip up like that you can't just be standing along the edge of the lake like he is doing. Your body turns into a human sail, and you will get blown into that lake. And you will die within a minute or so from the shock of that massive cold. This ain't no joke. It happens more than is reported.

I'm thinking that we are going back to the days of the deep freeze. It used to be like that every single winter and I'm seeing a return to those cold temps again. Not as much snow but fast drops in temps in very short periods of time. That is very dangerous. Temps used to gradually drop but now it's an instant freeze. Within a matter of hours you go from above freezing temps to massive below zero drops in temps. There was a time when that lake you see right there would rise up and cover all of that area he is standing on. It would be one huge, gigantic sheet of ice. Coast Guard cutters would routinely be in that water trying break up many feet thick of ice. Let's see what happens. We have lost the majority of the beaches around Lake Michigan due to these cold and warm trends. The waters have been reclaiming the lake. The power of this thing is incredible.

On my passed father side, they grew up and lived few generations on a small island in the Baltic, something like "Port Protection" life. If the winter hit hard, they were quite isolated, no helicopter coming to bring stuff or pick one up. And not many bridges held when the sea ice rumble did its thing. Do not want to count how many times I have fixed or rebuilt a bridge due to winter damage.
edit: (do not know why sometimes I get a "like" from myself). Must be a wrong click. OTOH I do like reading comments but not until I would click my own comment.
edit2: while typing this, another snowfall began. I do not like it.

We've gone from cold to actually comfortable right now outside in short sleeves - Now it's time for the storms to fire up again with all the juicy humidity around. West of here has already been getting hammered and tomorrow about lunch it will be here raising Hell as expected.
Seems over the last decade or so it's been like that at one point in January, right before we get a good cold blast that knocks temps down and finally keeps them down for a bit. We'll actually be cooler for a longer period of time after January - Doesn't mean we'll have record breaking cold temps but we will have cooler temps all around up until mid March at least with some cool mornings extending into mid/late April. Just how it is here.
At any rate I'll have to keep an eye on the weather, it's gonna be a busy weather day tomorrow.

well, here at 60th degrees northern latitude, been continuous snow fall, have to use the snow shovel and brush every day. Forecast predicts rain. hmm, I am not young anymore, however, fortunately we were three persons to clear the yard for today. Tomorrow, when they clear the street, more snow shuffling of the yard entry or smthn.

heck, wet snow coming down all the time. It builds up over the open Baltic sea, and then dumps down its "cargo" here on coastal regions. I am not so young anymore that I would feel to clear snow every morning. Two days gone and my dear wife did not even use the car, but walked. Today she did use the car though. But, as far as I know, the grass is not greener on the other side(experienced all kind of weather conditions (including other continents over the years)). And I am not a climate change "hippie", just trying to do by with a little bit of thought in daily house/household energy actions.

It's so sad. My solar panels are just useless in this weather. They are covered in ice and snow and barely put out anything at all. Winter weather is just so bad for them. And I'm not going up there to clean them off either. It's just too dangerous for me. I just know Pete's laughing his ass off. His setup is kicking ass where he is. Location is everything with this technology.

You guys are getting that storm that was here. Man that cold was brutal. We got lucky on the snow front. We only got about 9 inches here. But the winds were freaking brutal. Took those windchills right down to -30*F. Had to use my fireplace to help the furnace keep up with the subzero temps at night. Had to put some capsaicin cream on my elbows and knuckles on my left hand to keep them warm. My nerve damage was really irritated during that cold snap. Cleaning that snow in the sub zero temps wasn't good.

Snowing here, only sticking on the grass so far. If it's still here at sun rise, I'll grab a pic. Only get snow every couple years or so, most was about 8 inches turned the area in to total chaos, actually had snow all the way down the to Sacto even put some down in the bay area, more than 20 years ago now. Added: 5 AM still need more light. Don't get a lot this stuff here! Might be a little March snow for the east coasters.

I am exhausted. Haven't slept in two days/nights. We had a nasty ice storm here that took down trees and power lines. I had no power for over 24 hours. No hot running water, no heat, no lights, internet.........nothing. It got freaking cold in here. Thank God the lights came back on this morning. I wasn't supposed to get electricity back til tomorrow. I am fortunate to have it. www.shawlocal.com/northwest-herald/news/local/2023/02/23/nearly-27000-left-without-power-as-freezing-rain-snow-continues-in-mchenry-county/Crews are out trying to clear the roads. Lots of trees down and lots of power lines down. I took a ride around town this morning. What a mess. It was eery trying to sleep and in the darkness you could hear the loud crashes and pops as trees came down. Transformers were exploding around me.
