I need a super cheap but overclockable motherboard for Am2+ Am3. Ive tested 2 boards that I purchased and both dead as a door nail. The 3rd one I have left is a server board and does not overclock.
Best bang for the buck. Suggestions please.

How is that possible?! the m5a78 is a AM3+ mobo so which one are you looking to get a AM2+ AM3 or AM3+? I know they make 2 or 3 mobos that do 2+ and AM3 not sure about ones that do all 3 the last AMD mobo I had was a M5A99FX Pro R2.0 it was AM3+ it was a decent mobo the only AM2 mobo I had was AM2+/AM2 and that was a XFX 750a SLI mobo it was pretty decent had the PSU not fried in the CPU plug it still worked after it just had a burnt spot in the CPU plug on the mobo M5A99FX Pro R2.0 is AM3/AM3+ 990fx chipset

Gigabyte 790 boards are about your best bet. None will be really cheap though. If you can find one for under 50 bucks, jump on it.

Jon used to like M3A32-MVP they are rare these days though the Nbridge died in most of them according to Shane's Asus Tech. You are looking for a 790x/fx DDR2 board Asus made a few models like M4A and Gigabyte had a few models cheap is the hard part.

Oh that's a good price shady. The last one I had did numerous cold runs. I killed the bios chip on it. The NB ran cool because I did a TIM job on it like most of the big boards I had during that time. But after reading what you guys are saying about the NB, I should be careful. But man its a great board!!
The M5A being AM3 was nice and cheap. Handled all processors FX and lower so going cold was never a issue. Most or all of my 7ghz plus clocks where done on it so that's why my interest in it. Had 2 of them. Both pushed 2v with a little trick I found which I did post a utube of.
Gotta line up on a M4A79 deluxe which I also had one of those also. Another top notch board imo.
Sorry Scotty, I was never fond of Gigabyte bios terms and layout. Had one or two but they never seemed to clock like the asus counterparts.
Here is that over volt trick video.

cool deal man I am looking for something new to bench I really want to get a cheap Z270 mobo and 7350k we shall see how that goes If You want to keep prices as low as possible, maybe You can choose a Z710 board even. However prices can be pretty silly, we can see someday that z170 version of same board is more expensive than the Z270 version. I've bought a 7350K a bit earlier and choose a Maximus VIII Gene beside. I can tell You that I'm perfectly satisfied with it. No, even over-satisfied ! It's better than I thought. I'm still learning and testing this new platform. It's a pretty crazy stuff. Easy benching at 4.8 - 5 Ghz with a small air cooler and sometimes it can produces such numbers that I can't believe nearly.

The first Z170 board I had was a Gene got it covered in Vaso but it went good it was better than the Hero which I bought 2 of. I had one new Hero in the cupboard and when the Gene died I bought another before even running the first Hero only to find they were not as good as the Gene.

YAY. M4A79T showed up and I got her posted and running the 8600B Phenom C3 chip. 2990mhz at 260x11.5 4 sticks of GEIL memory and it is solid stable. Got the liquid running through the water block at a nice cozy 56f temperature. At the reported 1.622v still looking to break 30c.
Back in the game fellas. Have a few processors to dump into this board and plan to dedicate time back into my hobby. I've longed to do so.
Big thanks to Brad for the hook up. I owe ya one!

The M4A79-T deluxe is AM2 (DDR2) only processors. I know the 8600B I'm running now will not work in AM3 chipset boards, meaning Phenom I Agena based processors and Athlons Semprons ect. A 4000+ won't run in the AM3 board. The pinout is different.

The basic differences between AM2/AM2+/AM3 CPU's are.
AM2 supports Hyper Transport 2 and DDR2 memory. AM2+ supports Hyper Transport 3 and DDR2 memory. AM3 supports Hyper Transport 3 and both DDR2 & DDR3 Memory.
I usually go with. 790 chipset for AM2/2+ 890 chipset for AM3 990 chipset for AM3+ FX CPU's
