Shane seen my method for replacing motherboard VRM caps today. Anyone that has replaced motherboard caps knows what a pain it is the copper plane is on the topside of the board and you are working from the bottom side. Getting enough heat to melt the solder completely and getting it out with solder wick can be a challenge. Your normal pencil iron is next to useless if I do it the normal way I either use a 60 watt iron or a gas one and its still a pain a .7mm drill in a pin vice can become your friend to clean the holes up. A solder bath is so much easier you just sit the board on it so the tails of the capacitor are in the solder and they lift straight out you have your new replacement with the tails cut to length at the ready and you just push the new one back in. We replaced 5 caps today in 15 mins and some of that time was waiting for it to heat up. It is made from a copper CPU cooler slug that had a 1/2" hole halfway through it I drilled a hole through the side that meets up with the 1/2" hole and the air from the hot air tool goes in the side and out the bottom. Then I drilled a 3/8" hole a 1/4" deep in the top deep enough for the tails of the capacitor to sit in the solder and chamfered it off with an angle grinder. Looks a bit rough but works good. The slug is held onto an old floppy drive caddy out of an old case with 2 3mm screws. In the pic it hasnt got enough solder in the top you have the hole full overflowing and it works like a charm. Its also a boon for stripping dead boards of their solid caps to use in graphic card mods for extra capacitance they slip out in perfect condition.

have a real close look at the vrms with a pair of magnifying headsets on, if theyve blown hard you may see burn or like a black smoke mark, maybe a hole in them, or the solder can be coming out from the sides from overheat when they fail i had 3 vrms in my first fm2 board a gig f2a 88x-d3h..they actually caught on fire when the went , dunno why either, id just taken the heatsinks off checked them, they looked ok...new thermal pad tape , started her up and poof, then i bought the crossblade ranger board lol

Vin thats what i thought vin, this is where petes is a cracker, the cap pins fit in the solder hole at the top, doesnt take a lot of solder but does it beautifully with good heat from the hot air gun does it great

Yeah, I thought about getting myself a solder pot too. Removing caps can be a real pain.

Pete, this is awesome, i have recapped three boards so far and every time it gets a bit easier but it's still a damn hard work with a normal iron! I just use a sewing needle to clean the holes after desoldering dead caps. i stick the dull end into a wine cork so it's easier to push through. I laugh at myself doing it, but gets the job done. Could you maybe do a little video so we can see that thing in action? i would love to see it but i'm unfortunetely nowhere as near as shane is, to you

So, I'm looking to use this great method on motherboards to re-cap. If I may ask, how do you position the motherboard so it's stable & sitting precisely in the solder? Do you use an elevated platform to hold the board?

Naa just sit it on top with your hands then pull the cap out with one hand.

I use a butane soling iron heat up the leads, pull the cap with my hands. To install a cap I cut the leads on the cap to the same size, line it up on the holes and heat the holes until the leads of the caps slid through. I don't use a wick or solder sucker.
