So on a reboot the latest version for the Crimson drivers installed (don't remember setting auto install)
Now that the drivers have installed once logged in to Windows I get a blank screen. Can't see shit...
Go to safe mode and try to uninstall the drivers and it hangs... and won't uninstall.
Tried just going to device Manager and uninstall from there and it does, but AMD software is still there and is still messing with me.
I just spent 3 hours messing with this.. Only 1 solution to try was to use a different GPU, I don't have one at hand right now. So wth am I suppose to do with that?
So now I'm doing an OS restore from my last OS backup... total horse shit...
Tried to do a system restore but seems none are present... don't know what to think about that one.. Once I have a functional PC again that's the 1st thing I'll be looking at.
This is a bit of a rant. But also looking for a few suggestions.
OS is Win 8.1

dunno if this helps vin but i use IOBIT uninstaller, it gives you all your programs listed in it, it cleans up and shreds if you wish, i just untick the advanced care system shit that comes with it, if you miss that it it will install it, then i use the iobit to uninstall it, www.iobit.com/en/advanceduninstallerpro.php?AFF=40025&__c=1

Nvidia is your friend. Ive always been a green member until a game I was playing didn't play nice and I got these 290x's. I've never had a driver problem until this. What is so frustrating is this problem has been in existence since Crimson with never an appropriate resolution... nearly all that resolved it had to reinstall windows? I'm sorry but nothing short of nuking your OS should ever have to lead to that as the fix... Vin

It isn't. Thanks for the suggestion though. Vin

OK, I'm back and running 16.7.3... System Restore is back on (lost it when I imaged back to the new SSD's it seems) but it's on and I did a manual restore point...
I also disabled auto install for the driver and removed all notifications... new drivers won't be helping these old r9-290x's...

Simple cure I have been through this before I thought there was something wrong with my R9-290 strix would only run on the supplied driver on the disk. When I bought the Sapphire R9-390X Nitro it did exactly the same thing. Get off the 1680x1040 monitor the later AMD drivers dont support it. Shane would remember me bringing the 390x to test on his Dell Ultrasharp. I bought a cheap 1920x1080 AOC monitor for benching.
The trick to getting the driver back off is to boot in safemode go to device manager\ dislay adaptor\ R9-290 right click then click uninstall then reboot ignore that it wants you to reboot again to initialise the driver and you can uninstall the driver properly.

The trick to getting the driver back off is to boot in safemode go to device manager\ dislay adaptor\ R9-290 right click then click uninstall then reboot ignore that it wants you to reboot again to initialise the driver and you can uninstall the driver properly. I did try that and it didn't work for me... here were the steps I took. 1) Booted in to safe Mode and tried to uninstall AMD Install Manager (this usually also does the drivers) from the windows application install list... - - resulted in the uninstaller hanging at like 25%.. I left it for nearly 30 min... it just sat there 2) Did a normal boot windows, popped up but before the blank screen I tried to fast click to uninstall - - the uninstaller started but again after 15-20 minutes, nothing happened... I was hoping the PC was still installing... but there was probably a prompt and not being able to see it.. 3) Did another Windows Boot and the issue was still there.. 4) Went back in to Safe Mode, through device manager I uninstalled the Display Adapter - - When back in normal Windows my resolution was small as I expected - - - Started the AMD software uninstall to get rid of the current Crimson version and in the middle of that my 1440 res came back and a second later another blank screen.... 5) Went back in to safe mode and uninstalled the driver though device manager again. - - tried to install the last version of Crimson that I was running... started to look good... - - - once back in windows, opened my radeon setting and saw that I was running my earlier version - - - - - BOOM Black F---ng screen again At this point I said F--it and restored from OS Backup.... I really don't know what else I could had done... I shit you not when I said I faught it for 3 hours... Vin EDIT: oh and I also tried different GPU ports on the card somewhere in there...

Such a mess for no reason...
Do this...do that...
DDU Display Driver uninstaller ( for all Nvidia and AMD graphic drivers ). From oldest to latest.
Use it once and you will never use anything else again.

Well you are running a 1680x1040 monitor Vin? Change that and your troubles will be gone for good the Drivers flat out dont support 1680x1040 hence the black screen. Yep DDU works in safe mode. The AMD uninstaller wont though. Gee Vin you only fought with it for 3 hours

I got that wrong I thought you were running a 1680x1040 monitor. Stick with the driver that was working AMD has done that before made new drivers that only support the latest cards

vin i was just talkin to pete on the phone about it and i suggested a beta driver to try, he said it might work, ive tried a few with amd cards including my r9 280x, basically the same card...and havent had any dramas, might be worth a go

I'm back at my original driver and everything is working... it's the silly auto installer that screwed me in the 1st place. Had that not done it's whatever I would had been fine.

good stuff vinnie, happy to hear that, drivers can be such a pain in the arse, they might be a good driver but not necessarily in the bios version you have running and suits it

The R9-290 to R9-390 are a completely different chip called Hawaii The R9-290 and above were the only new chips everything below the 290 were 7000 series rebrands. And I am pretty sure your card wont even look at the latest crimson drivers

Pretty sure you're right Pete. 7xxx cards (280 and lower) use the original AMD drivers and that was the end of those if I recall correctly.
