Wile my two other builds on on the back burner wile I track down some parts. I chose to start a project that has been a long time coming. A very long time coming.
So I got this late 70s very very very (that's 3 verys 😅) high end TV. its about 30", has all the options form being able to used as a intercom with the remote being a receiver to being able to be hooked up to 4 TV antenna s and pulling the image form al 4 antenna. Every setting can be adjusted from the outside, sync, color, focus, its even digital with old school 70s digital CCTV inputs and it has a OSD, even has a output for the sound to rout it to a hifi amp. High end stuff for a TV from 1978.
But here's the deal. Its old and worn out. the tube has been rejuvenated a fee times and the image is getting worse and worse, the circuit boards all need a recap, all 7 of them, the built in amp for the speakers is dead, and now the red gun in the CRT is shorting. now I'm not crazy. Before the tube started to have problem I was planing to swap the main board with a modern one, they sell universal CRT main board with a built in fly back and everything and the tube can handle lower 4:3 hd resolutions but the ageing tube and the short on the red gun means that's is a no go.
Then I got a crazy idea, swap the tube, no I'm not going to be cutting the back of the tube off and molding a new CRT on it. I don't have the tools for that. but swap the whole tube wight a late 90s or early to mid 00s CRT TV. Ok ok why? like why? just get a new TV dude! Well this project is not as crazy as it would seem at first. you see this TV is in a massive wooden console and it fits in very well with the older decor in my house. We been slow getting mostly mid century decor in our home, The wife loves it and went as far to put a full size leg lamp on top of it. I also love to play old light gun games so a CRT is needed in the house.
ok ok, but like how? surly I cant just put a modem CRT into the wooden box ? right ? right? well... yes I can ! For those that do not know most CRTs have the same mounting points. There are 4 steel brackets on the corners on a CRT that mount it to the casing. As long as I find a CRT around the right size I could make it work, but I will need to do a little work work likely.
the next step will be mounting main board, that's not a big deal with all the room, however I will need to reroute all the buttons. there is a button panel I will try to reuse, worse case I'll make a new one. Then I will be mounting the PC and Saturn... yes you read that right. This TV is massive and I have room for the both. I want to also put USB and the Saturn controller ports next the the button panned, there is a blank areas behind the door that would work perfectly for that and the Saturn has a ODE so I don't need to worry about CDs.
Then I will have to make a new bezel to go around the tube on the front of the TV.
As of now I'm looking for the right size modem CRT with a lower amount of use on it and will dive into this project once I find one. however i will be embedding the Saturn and PC into the TV before I find a new tube to put into it.
So stay tuned as I will be updating this soon

You know me, I like pictures!! XD.
I didnt know most CRTs had the same mounting points how interesting. My wife is mid century nut bag as well. I've rebuilt 2 swag lamps for her just a couple weeks ago in fact.

The hardest part is getting the focus and squarness of the picture right. Yes another tube is easy to put in one dimension to take note of is the diameter of the neck of the tube because it will be better to use the yoke off the old tube under the yoke there will be 3 or 4 rubber wedges they hold the yoke still over the lifetime of the TV and are how the picture is adjusted and there is also the focus rings. Try to get the service manual for it it will have the actual procedures for adjusting all of that makes it a lot easier than guessing. One thing the Ulter lead for the tube runs between 25 to over 30Kv a belt from that will throw you across the room a tube is like a big capacitor they do hold a charge you know how to discharge them with large screwdrivers I hope.
Rejuvenating Tubes and valves is a bit of a shonky procedure used in the industry it either works for a while or you burn the coating off the cathodes doing it and it fkks them usually that is generally a procedure for vintage radio where you cant get a replacement valve.
If the year was 2000 I would be able to give you a heap of data about it but that has all been thrown out a long time ago. Good Luck You have got my interest I want to know how you go with this.

Well this sucks, The CRT I found was a nice very late slot mask CRT from around 2006. I plugged it in to test it, worked great then poof.
You know me, I like pictures!! XD. I didnt know most CRTs had the same mounting points how interesting. My wife is mid century nut bag as well. I've rebuilt 2 swag lamps for her just a couple weeks ago in fact. they're only the same per a given size. Normally there are 4 steel tabs on the corners on the tube. I'll try to get some photos tonight to show you what I'm talking about.

Oh no I'm not taking the tube off the neck, I'm transplanting the whole CRT. think case swapping. And yeah The old TV I have has had the tube rejuvenated a few times and the red gun is falling now. It had a lot of hours on it.

What you are going to use the yoke thats with the new tube well hopefully its compatible with the deflection circuits but I doubt it. The yoke is what deflects the cathode ray around the screen. I can see a blown circuit board happening here because of incompatabilities or you just wont be able to get it to scan properly. I will tell you now replacing tubes isnt for the faint of heart its a lot of frustrating buggerising around.
As I said good luck
