Just had a weird one with my chiller . Temp for coolant stayed on -4 and it was probably set much lower . Turns out it thought ambient was -3 and set temps accordingly. Anyway , stripped a temp probe I had and connected it up to the rear and then it saw ambient at +14 ....happy days. Temp came back to normal. I never had a temp probe connected for ambient before , weird Oh well , live and learn . When you see ice around your pipes you get worried , especially when you didn't set that temp.

How's it gonna know the internal temp if it doesn't have an external temp? Even a multimeter has an external temp sensor.
