I needed to upgrade the case to my HTPC/Home Server, its needed a HDD and Backup drive upgrade and my current Antec Silent from 2004 was not longer cutting it. I decided to go with the Fractal Define R5 Black. Price was right at $125 at a local computer store. In this price point, this is an amazing case. Here is a link to Fractals site for this case; www.fractal-design.com/home/product/cases/define-series/define-r5-blackHere is a picture of the original case/setup; Here is a pic of all that gear plus a RAID card and two more HDD's What I am loving about this case; 1) ample storage for the extra PSU cables in the back door 2) Two SSD are mounted on the back of the MB tray 3) up to eight removable HDD/SSD trays are included with all the required HW to mount any combination you need. 4) extremely modular HDD tray locations. you can remove them and relocate them to your hearts content. 5) Cooling possibilities are nearly endless, the top of the case has 3 removable panels, I've decided to keep the last rear panel off 6) two 140mm fans came with the case, I've mounted them both on the front blowing inward. I've also added another 120mm fan at the bottom blowing upward. and I've re-directed the CPU fans to blow to the rear as well. With this combination I've been able to drop my CPU temp by at least 5 degrees. 7) all the panels are insulated, with all these fans in this case, I've never had this setup this quiet. 8) there's a 3 speed fan controller on the front, I have it set to high as it made no audible difference and a little more air flow wouldn't hurt. So if you are in the market for a case, keep this one in mind. Vin

Zombie thread but having recently picked up a Define 7 wanted to state it's still an awesome case! Love the stealthy, no show, clean look for sure and working inside the case is a dream (no knuckle-busting in these). Very solid case for sure.

I've done a build in an R5 and R6. I'm sure the R7 would have been just as lovely to work with.
got pics?

I love that all doors, etc secure/release with a gentle push. Just one more of the case's nice touches.

Thanks freeagent! 2012?! You led the fractal curve, for sure. Nahh.. A few peeps at OCF had them I think.. I should have got the black tbh.. at least I would have been able to upgrade to a glass side panel My acrylic is all scratched where my 580 Matrix Platinum used to sit. Its funny.. I bought the case to treat myself after my first son was born, and now my first son is using it I had mine stuffed with 120x38s in every orifice lol.. it wasn't as quiet as it was supposed to be

Gotta be onen of the most popular cases out there. Even today! I read about these in a lot of forums, be it old or new threads. It's just a great case and a lot of people hang onto them. Still have my TJ07, and probably will until I kick the bucket!

Nice setup Fun. I like the monitor. That GPU wouldn't be working too hard to update that resolution eh? and does it adaptive sync at all?
and I have that exact same PSU in my current build as well.

Thanks Vin! Yeah, I'm pretty excited. New platform so lots to learn. Cpu oc is still meh, ram situation is miserable...at 3600 1:1, occt throws mad errors starting around 45 minutes in. Can boot 3666-3733 but those are real unstable. Barely scratched the surface on 3090ti oc (everyone seems to say temp is the limiter but the card never gets above 74-75C). Great to have so much learning still! lololol
Yeah...card never breaks a sweat pushing the monitor. Hoping for some new vr headsets in 2023 that'll eat whatever the card can throw.
freeagent- lolol...yeah...we're good at making stuff last for aeons (well, whatever we don't kill that is).

I have a 3090 that runs some compute for me on a project, GPU is pulling about 260 watts, the GPU temp is 50 degrees, but the Memory Junction Temp is 92-98 degrees... you generally want to keep that temp below 90.
Beyond 92 you can degrade the memory and I've read were ppl didn't manage temps and beyond 100-105 the GPU mem will throttle, but you can also expect the card to die within 6 months if you live beyond 100.
I have an EVGA FTW 3090 and I know they have a great warranty so I'm not super worried about it. I've tried to tune down the core and mem and this is the best I can get out of this GPU without changing the thermal pads. Apparently that's the fix, but those pads are $75CAD for me to get for this card. Seems excessive on what should be a top-tier card. I feel it's an EVGA issue and not a me issue.
I use HWiNFO64 to monitor that temp. I for some reason can't get that sensor in MSI AB (updated to the latest version) or EVGA Precision. Just not sure why.

Nice! Great tip Vin, thank you! Next time I'm bored with cpu/mem oc attempts *groan* and do some 3d tests, I'll see where that juncture temp's running. Gotta spend $ on top of the $$$ these cards cost? Guess they figure if people are hungry for a few more degrees, they'll make us pay. Kick in the dingding but guarantee people are payin' (as I eye the case, already thinking of getting a price check lol). edit: Took a couple quick pokes. Temps don't seem to be an issue (at least atm)....definitely needs more cowbell.

if you game a lot, Run Timespy Extreme in a loop for a better nod on what it would do (or run the stability test, it'll go 10 times). That will give you a better idea.
I have to run a 120mm fan on the back of the GPU to keep my junction temp under control, otherwise it goes to 100-102.
But your initial looks pretty good.
3080's don't have this issue cause there is only memory on 1 side of the card. 3090's having IC's on both sides consolidating the heat... so it needs better heat transfer pads for log/full time runs.

oh, also. On the end of the EVGA 3090's there is a 4pin PWM fan header for an Aux. fan. It'll run the aux fan at the same % as the GPU fans.

Got 3733/1866 working nice n' smoothly now....just needed MOAR VOLTS!!! lol (1.50v, not bad). Let the videocard loop de loop overnight...88C on that junction! Atm have it manually oc'd...+130/+250. A little weirdness....I get better results with the voltage slider at +50 vs +100. I need to find a good curve guide. Some of the guides I used for other cards just don't seem to really work out well on this one. I know...drifting waaaaay OT but par for the course with me lol
