The wife is overseas vising family so lets see if I can sneak a new PC into a case I have laying around 🤣 I might need to cook the books for this past month too
Ok joking aside I did sell a lot of stuff to pay for this build so I should not be getting to much tampo 😅
So let dig in here.
For the case I'll be using my old late 90s massive server case. Its sat empty for a wile now and need something crammed into it. I cut some holes in it the other night for cable management, I still need to make a custom plate to mount a ATX PSU in the case as its setup for a very old redundant PSU. I'll get some photos posted tonight of the case.
For the Motherboard I picked up a M3N-HT Deluxe/Mempipe for a whopping 23$ it's a 780a motherboard, AM2+.
Got to have a CPU, a 560be with a UC-1 extreme water block. For ram I picked up some blackline 1066 cl5 ddr2 in 2x2gb sticks. I'm told that have D9s but we will have to take a peek to find out for sure.
For the GPUs I picked up a pair of GTX 285s with blocks, core only blocks but I have a few passive PCB coolers for the gtx 285 that would pair well with the core only blocks. For sound a old sound blaster audigy 2 zs. Not much to say here, I wanted EAX and a game port header.
Storage... well thats a bit crazy and overkill. I picked up 4 250gb mx500 SSDs I'll be running in raid 0 along with a 1tb WD blue for backups and a bluray drive.
And if storage was not overkill I'll be running a 360mm, 240mm and 120mm rad with dual pumps.
And last but not least a enermax platimax 1350w PSU I picked up with the box for a rather good deal.
Oh yes the OS, I'll be running XP SP3 pro 32bit,but not a plane stock OE install. I'll being using ICE XP advance, a custom modded XP install. I hatted XP's UI form day one, TBH XP in general but I want EAX and better native dos support then 2k has to offer.
Right now I have the cable management holes cut in the case, I'll need to make a plate to mount a ATX PSU and 120mm rad where the old redundant PSU mounted and after that I'll be waiting on parts.

What the wife don't know won't hurt her. XD. Famous last words!
She'll be a good rig. Fun watching your builds!

She's from a supper simple conservative background in the Philippines and is very much let the man speak and pro patriarch type. As long as theirs food in the house and the bills are payed shes happy. Granted she has been nagging me for a carabao for a wile now... like where in the middle Ohio do you get a carabao and better yet where would we keep it when we live in the middle of town 😂

Never been around Filipino women form the provenances? most are far from material, well unless if you count food and family as material. The carabao thing is more from missing things she had as a kid and back home. out side of a few things she misses form home that shes almost never asked for anything but time together. More often then not its me telling her she needs a new XYZ and her telling me to get rid of stuff like just the the day she said to get rid of the washer/dryer as she hand washes everything.

Not really no. Most women I've met came over with similar mind set, but nearly completely "Americanized" within a years time. You must be one of the lucky ones where she stayed mostly to her roots (old school). Don't see it much.

I got the SSDs today, installed them into the case and started to make the power cables for them. i.ibb.co/mN8TjqH/22473307-A66-E-4110-B2-AE-172-BB2-AD7667.jpgNever been around Filipino women form the provenances? most are far from material, well unless if you count food and family as material. Honestly we know a few others who haven't become material too, but I can see why some might fall into the trapping of sin and a materialistic life with what it's like here. obviously our culture here in the US is very consumer oriented and that leads to wanting material things, debt and the horrible things that come with envy pf others and wanting things. And you know you got to keep up with the jone's 😂

I got the ram last Saturday and surprise surprise Mushkin put their own PN on the ram chips and Googeling the PN brings up nothing. Anyone good with Mushkin part numbers?

Usually 1Gbit DDR2 is PSC or Micron Rev.E. Technically "D9" but not the type you want for hardcore overclocking. Got a photo of the chips?

I got all but one remaining part for the build last night. I'm still waiting on the mem pipe cooler from Scott. Last night I got the 240mm rad installed into the case and I'm hoping to make the new plate to mount the PSU this weekend. I also found that I will need to do some modding to make the swiftech passive PCB coolers work with the 3rd party Chinese GPU core blocks. I'll need to shave off less then a mm form the block or passive coolers. I'll post photos of what I'm talking about tonight.
I also plan to get the PSU cables ran tonight ran and I'll dig though my scrap pile to see if I have any steel sheet I can use to make the PSU/rad mounting plate.

Some times I forget how big this case is, most of the cables on the enermax platimax 1350w PSU are not long enough lol. I'll have to get longer cables

ok well I thought shaving off a mm from the sides of the blocks I bought would allow them to work with the swiftech passive PCB coolers but I forgot about the height of the blocks too. I'll have to ether find something else, cut up the heat sinks to make them work or use a 1/4 inch spacer. After giving it a lot of thought I chose to use the GPU blocks with the stock bottom plate, shroud and fan of the 285, I'll more or less be making a DIY hybrid cooler lol. Now I scrapped a lot of dead GPUs in the past and know there is a lot of solder holding the card together so this will be fun!!! After about 30 minutes of blasting with a butane torch I have the base plate of the stock air cooler removed. i.ibb.co/yQ6L57Y/1.jpgNext I'll have to remove the fins and heat pipes. The fins take a lot of time to remove, snapping each on off one by one wile the heat pipes can just be pried off once he fins are gone i.ibb.co/wdN9yjY/2.jpgi.ibb.co/K5GZsZg/3.jpgThe next step will be cut some pieces out around the GPU core and to solder some passive heat sinks to the base plate and drill some holes in the red side plate for the tubing to come out of.

Ok after looking over things I found that I can use the swiftech passive PCB coolers without cutting them up, I just had to grind a little bit off them. I"ll post photos of what I did latter tonight.
I also found that the die on the core of my 285s are not 100% flat so I'll have to lap the die of the 285s a we bit. I die lapped CPUs in the past so it should not be that hard to do on a GPU.

Big thanks to Scot for the mem pipe cooler! It took a bit of fiddling to make it fit right, I get the idea its built for ram with chips on only one side of the sticks wile the ram I have has chips on both sides so it was a little tricky to make it fit on the side without the heat pipe as the plate wanted to bend. i.ibb.co/PgP2JgV/IMG-3259.jpgi.ibb.co/1X9HcJz/IMG-3260.jpghere is the part I crudely ground off the PCB heat sink on the 285. I know its messy looking but the case dose not have a window so I"m not worried about it. i.ibb.co/TctXj33/IMG-3261.jpg

I got the mounts for the GPU blocks and one is installed. I"m still waiting on a second gtx 285. I got the PCI-e 6 pin extension cables too. Once this heat wave dies down I'll dig around in the scrap pile and find a piece of steel I can use to make the PSU and 120mm rad mounting bracket
