Alright,
The ABSOLUTE TRUTH.
Tagg is telling half the truth.
I will make a documented article about GTX480 and 580 bios mode, how it is really done, what preparation and tools needed ( a lot is needed that Tagg does not say that ).
BAD, Very disappointing results.
Yes, PCI-e goes to 16 X 2.
Back to back comparison with 16 X 1.1 on Firestrike only for now.
Less than 5%.
Simply the card denies to scale on Z790.
Obviously I tried anything possible.
Negative.
Will update as necessary.

Although I do not wish to sound ungrateful first of all to Tristan for pointing to the right direction and then to Tagg for sharing, I must note that :
There is no chance, even for an experienced user to make it work if you dont bust your ass around Internet sites to find out EXACTLY the tools required and the bioses.
Tagg, if you are to share either do it 100% or dont.
The most difficult part is to create the correct usb drive to be able to flash. With right tools and bios. And he mentions nothing about this usb stick.
He does not mention that the commands are not the ones indicated in the video.
1) nvflash --protectoff
2) nvflash -4 -5 -6 xxxbios.rom
He shows nvflash -5 -6. -4 is needed to enforce bios update.
I will be back with a full guide.
Meanwhile there are some benchmarks that scale very well and some not at all.
We shall see.

My card is not tops but still has an Asic quality index of 75%, and without HW mods goes steady to 900 and has amazing mems running at 2300. I will be fine.And it is on air at 1.138V. |

And they do not accept " the gift " excuse. They check the item's price from a list they have from EBAY !!! and they charge. I swear to God thos is true. So why pay transport from US TO GREECE ( at your expense ) and me pay customs ? |

On the other hand shipping need to be paid twice for package to EU and inner EU shipping.
But maybe that way is cheaper.

Relax  Jon, let me run in the next couple of days all the 3d benchmarks and see what scales and what not. Ran tonight cloudgate and got 20 hw points and also icestorm and got 2 golds and 1 silver. But points are not there. If it is worth it, we will do it. If it is worth it, a good local friend owns a GTX580 ASUS with 81% Asic. 50 bucks he asks. I will take it. Truth is cores need chilling. Fermi cards have strong vrm's and with a simple wire mod, voltage goes to 1.18v. Now here are the big points. Where is that chiller ? |

alex2305 I understand what you're saying. For sure we could use someone to distribute packages over the pond. Good idea, will keep it in mind. georgekokovinis It seemed to bench comfortably at 955mhz. It'll do whatever v-core you want. Just turn the dial. Ran on tap to drain cooling, so about 45F water delta. Just wasn't quite cold enough to reach 1000mhz. I'm not into breaking GPUs I ran it once for a few days only. Had some fun. If it's not worth it, it's not worth it. Totally valid point.

Conclusion. Certainly it is good to restore card's operation to PCIE 2.0 for Z690/Z790, This by itself improves some scores. But, as with all HW, the starting point is cooling. Needs volts, needs deep cold, needs HW mods to take it to 1050 core. Needs a very strong cpu under cold. And finally needs this "mod" to restore its full operation. For LN2 benchers it is a must because it will make the final difference to get to top. Other than that, dont bother. Moving on |

Ya, Time Spy is a tough one ain't it. No, the cpu doesn't help much, scales directly to gpu clocks.
Good show George. You did get some of those scores looking better! Love it!!
I fired up a 9600GT last night. Cpu matters NONE. 4ghz, 5ghz, 6ghz. Card doesn't clock well. Very much needs modification. The bios mod is not a problem. Can't get the card to take a flash yet. 🙄
