Hi folks, it's been a wile since I messed with x48. I recall the chip sets memory controller not handling 4gb or 2gb sticks or 4 sticks all to well? But I can't recall witch it was. I do recall one of the 3 limiting FSB OC'ing and max CPU OC's.
Can anyone give me the run down on that ? I do not plan to run more the 1600FSB so maybe this is moot???
Thanks !

On the topic of more RAM sticks, or specifically 4 vs. 2: More sticks will be harder for the memory controller (MCH) in the NB. Your max FSB clocks will therefore be limited vs 2 or 1 stick of RAM, but you can still get a decent overclock with 4 sticks on LGA775. It will also tax the DDR power delivery more as well so you may encounter more vDIMM droop.
Don't expect anything stratospheric with all slots populated though. As for higher capacity DIMMs, well, good luck finding non-ECC 4GB DDR2 sticks. 2GB the 1Gbit ICs are just not that great, they will limit you even more than having 4 sticks will. It's certainly a moot point for FSB @ or around 1600 MHz.

I don't need more then 4gb of ram so I'm fine with not finding a 4gb stick.
What did you mean when you said " 2GB the 1Gbit ICs are just not that great" 2gb sticks aren't that good?

PSC, Elpida and kind of Nanya & Micron made decent ICs in 1Gbit capacity but they don't hold a candle to the 512Mbit ICs like D9GMH/GKX, D9DCN, D9DQT, Elpida AJBG.

Most of my better ddr2 has heatsinks on it so I will have to do some testing and looking up PNs.

"I recall the chip sets memory controller not handling 4gb or 2gb sticks or 4 sticks all to well?" The statement is somewhat true for the time, early BIOS's were lacking. Do remember Crucial 1066 giving Asus MB's problems for some. As for 4x1 never had a problem that a touch more NB volts wouldn't solve. Asus P5E, RF BIOS, Patriot DDR2 1200 2.2 volts, NB 1.50 +/- volts, don't remember exact NB voltage but I was pretty voltage shy when this was sub'd in 2008. Actually ran 4x1 because of all the talk at the time.
