So I want to setup a dedicated benching setup to get back into benching. Knowing me I tend to push parts hard and kill things and sadly my income does not allow to be killing motherboards all the time. But low end GPUs, I can kill those all day long. I have a 4770k and a GA-Z97N-Gaming board, would it be worth my time to bench 3d on that or should I get something older or newer? They way I look at it the 4770k setup would not let me OC the PCIe bus much witch back in the day I found helped a lot with scores and on the flip side something newer would tick up the scores a little from the CPU tests in 3dmark and CPU emulated bits in the drivers.
I would be benching cards like the 7200, 6400, 8300 and 9400 and so on. stuff I can get all day long for dirt cheap.
What are your thoughts? keep the 4770k or get something different?
Thanks.

Newest Intel generation you have to bench with. The newer the better.

Run whatcha got. Newer gen would help a little but no point in buying until you have to. Nothing wrong with benching older cards on Haswell.

That was my thought. I just feel like I'll be leaving points on the table with the 4770k. I'll give it a shot and see how it turns out. IDK maybe PCIe bus speed does not mater on newer platforms??? So all I would be out is a few points from the CPU side.

8700K to 12400F same clocks 1000 points increase 4.7ghz 3Dmark most all.
3dmark 01, 03, 05, 06, Aquamarine, time spy, firestrike, the list goes on. Gets spanked by 160$ cpu.
But yeah, stick with haswell.

Now That I look at the other subs on hwbot, lol gold is in the bag. Almost everything I plan to bench has top scores on c2d or 920s systems. What was I thinking, I need a faster CPU 😂

As long as you stay below 8800GTX for cards Haswell will be fine it will keep the cards pipes full at all times. Also some of the latest systems revert to PCIe 4x 1.1 with old cards they dont want to run 16x 2 a few of the fellas are having that trouble with the GTX260's

Also some of the latest systems revert to PCIe 4x 1.1 with old cards they dont want to run 16x 2 a few of the fellas are having that trouble with the GTX260's well I'll just be benching entry level cards, 6xxx to 2xx cards, the 6400, 7200, 8300, 8400, 9400 and so on. I'll look out for the PCIe bus speed thing.

I can't tell if you're trying to goat me into getting gold or not believing the top scores for the cards I plain to bench are on c2d and 920s

I guise the next question, what does it take to run xp on haswell? SHould be no problem running XP on Haswell. It's been a long time since I've run my 4690K, I sold it many years ago now. I'd have to check if I used W7 or XP, probably W7.
