I'm sure I'm not the only one here that ends up with dead hardware. I hardly bench and have a pile of dead parts in my garage.
Anyway for those that do not know E-scrap is becoming a big thing and its not longer a thing where one has to recover gold form CPU's and what not. You can turn it in like copper wire now at some scrap yards.
Most scrap yards will take some form of E-scrap, most will take full PC's, Laptops and cell phones as is, so long as you pull the batteries. Some will take parts like motherboards, CPUs and more. And pay for them!!! Even if the scrap yards near by do not take E-scrap you can still pull the heat sinks and IHS and what not. Even HDD's without the HD board can be scraped at most yards.
Gold fingers, the part of the add-on card that goes into the slot is up to 30$ a lb right now. 386 and 486 CPUs are 155$ a lb, SK5/7 pents are worth a good bit. Even Eproms are worth money. Heck even cable ends from things like VGA and DVI are wroth money.
I guise what I'm getting at, don't toss your broken PC parts out when you can turn them in for cash.

Agree, here the used E-waste is handled fairly good. A private person does not earn much money on this, due to it will take much of ones time. One thing is e.g all the mobile phones, tablets and some home equipment. They just age too soon and then need some new stuff to get going. Older eqm. is then left in homes for do not how long. Over here we have places to recycle E-waste, takes some effort.
At some point here were "bins" in a shopping center, where one could toss their broken or passed unused mobile phones for recycling(not re use). Somehow that came to an end with the smartphone boom(likely due security matters, I guess) Read something about that, the contacts may have been corrosion free(gold plated etc.) here also are nowadays valuable metals.
Off Topic : some gangstas even scan parking yards to look for cars they could cut off the car catalytic converter of a car to trade in to a scrapper for the platinum.
Over here, seem copper metal, used in public constructions are/were gangstas thefts have been picking up. It is just sad.

Read something about that, the contacts may have been corrosion free(gold plated etc.] Yes, they’re billed as gold connectors. About 25-50 cents a lb on a good day.

I sent off 13-14lb of e-scrap the other day. about 6.5lb of motherboards, about 10oz of laptop boards, 12oz of gold ram, 4lb of add in cards, 14oz of hdd boards and 4oz of CD/floppy boards. With any luck I will make close to 40$ after shipping. Not much but 40$ can buy a hand full of older CPUs or ram. It is worth noting the aluminum, steel and copper bits were already puled from the parts. So all in all I might make close to 75-100$ off the dead parts. not bad pay for about 1-2hr of work.

I actually fix the dead hardware ppl throw out and actually make ok ish profit, starting to get into fixing more valuable hardware so eventually ill get somewhat decent $ out of it and only with basic methods like spraying 99% isopropyl and water dunking
Might move on to phones or something later on cause phones are alot more lucrative than ancient hardware

Selling or fixing is not worth my time for a 1$ or two when I can make more scrapping or at my day job. Out side of ebay no one pays good money for used hardware that is more then a few years old, and folks only pay good on eBay because of the 20% or what ever crazy amount of fees they now charge. Its 20$ a lb for ram. that is like a 25-50 cents a stick. no way I'm making that selling old 128mb ddr or junk ddr2 after fees for eBay or amazon and paypal or what ever payment app one uses. With scraping I take it to the yard or mail it off and get a check and that's it.
