Guy from work has been trying to get a little more life out of his daughter's Gateway computer so decided to add a SSD and update to W10, drive shows up in BIOS so boots from the USB stick, Windows doesn't see the drive. He thinks its the SSD so buys a WD Blue 1T drive and ends up with the same results, asks me if I'd look at it.
Get the box home turns out BIOS defaults was turning on the RAID function and SATA 1 & 2 so Windows is looking for an array. Get everything going and while putting the the WD back in the static bag drop it about four feet, lands on one of the corners and gets a pretty bounce. Crap, killed that drive, go into town can't find a replacement come home and as a last resort hook it up to the board I have on the bench and try to load W7, takes it without a hiccup, check all the clusters all OK and SMART saying everything in perfect working order.
Either they've improved shock resistance or got real lucky, the last one I dropped a bunch of years ago turned it into a paper weight.

Fat lucky ass mate !!! Western Digital, ah ? A name I wish to forget for life. From raptors to Velociraptors in Raid 0, the best hold on a year. Thanks to their 5 year warranty, I returned them each time and bought something else. Still have somewhere in a box two 300gb velociraptors, to remind me how garbage they were.

The pc gods were with you. I've dropped drives less than 2ft (about the height of a seat) and get the click-click laugh from it.
You were very-very lucky...

I've had a sparky (electrician) with butter fingers drop a few RE4's (Enterprise WD'd) and they took it like a champ and kept ticking...
for platter drives I only buy WD Blacks for myself... juts an FYI, RE4's and Blacks are the exact same drives with exception is the warranty... Blacks have a 3yr, RE4's have a 5yr with data recovery...
as for the blue, I think you got lucky.... Go buy a lottery ticket.
