As some of you may recall I had built a rather nice x58 system. Wile I love the platform I hate its lack of practicality and high power draw. And yes I know I have a lot of builds going on right now The 440bx just needs the software installed on and the 790i system is about half way done. I also have a scrap run later this month so I'll have some extra funds. I also still need to sell the x58 board. I have most of the parts right now to get it up and going, but I have a few small bits I still need and some case modded is needed. Planned parts list so far, some of witch I already have. Z690 dark or a maybe a z790 dark. i3 12100f, yes a i3, it will be OC'd. 16 or 32gb of ddr5. 512gb WD black NVME SSD 4 Sata SSDs in raid. 980ti SC with koolance block/backplate 750w PSU (will change out) Dual D5 pumps with XSPC bay res. HWlabs GTX 360mm rad. 120mm rad in the back of the case. Heatkiller rev 3 pro CPU block. 500/800 RPM fans. Clear 1/2 tubing. Blood red coolant.
black fittings. Black clamps. Black red cables. Sound blaster titanium HD OS will be ether Linux or 10 CRT monitor, 2048×1536@85Hz. hence the 980ti As you can see I have a odd mix of old and new an I think the mix of parts would make for a rather interesting build. The fans I'll be using are the Scythe Slip Stream 120mm DB at 7.5bda for the 500rpm and 10.7 for the 800rpm fans. I'd like to sick with the 500 RPM fans but I can't see them working all to well on the black ice GTX 360mm rad so I might need to use the 800RPM ones. However give the rad space I'll be dealing with and the low amount of heat in the loop I might be able to pull it off with the 500RPM fans. I have a rather good 750w PSU but I want to swap it for something with off shelf sleaved cables. And I don't need a 750w ether, a 650w would work heck I bet I could get away with a 550w too, but I don't want to push the PSU lol. Part 1: modding the case. I'll need to do the 240mm lower rad mod, its a simple mod and it you fallowed the x58 build you will know that all ready popped most of the rivets on the case. Given the poor air flow of the case, and even poorer with the 240mm mod I will need to add some intake fans. That's simple, a 120mm fan could be mounted to the 5.25 bay, 2 fans if I get creative. I can't wait to see what I come up with on the intake fans.

Phew, it'll be fast. I went with a 1tb 980 pro. I think that will fit this build nicely

But right now I'm more focused on getting the z690 dark. I missed out on the deal EVGA was having a ways back, they were like 450$, now they are close to 850$

I think a 690/790 Dark is over-kill for 12100 and a few sata drives though. Already on 13th gen, the low end chips will probably be rebranded 12th gen chips. At least so the rumors have it. Hope 14th gen has some price reduction on boards though. It's gotten too crazy. Watching the demand flop off.

I did not see any other z690 boards that had that.

I figured as much when mentioning it. Though the overclocking of chips isn't a problem with the G model. It is equipped with an external clock generator. Is the PS2 port for Playstation controllers or you mean keyboard or mouse? Lol

I have a 75% AT keyboard I pulled from a POS registered, it does not play well with PS/2 to USB adapters. Its a rather nice keybord, even has a port for a num pad if I needed it. And it uses old school complex alps switches.

Gosh, I haven't seen one for many years now, an AT keyboard I mean. Probably since back in high school when windows 95 was new yet. BUT thats not PS/2 connector is it? Aren't those only 4 or 5 pins? Yeach quick search model F keyboard.

Yeach quick search model F keyboard. AT is more or less PS/2. The AT connector was common on PCs up to around 95ish ? Its a really good keyboard and I like to a lot so I kept it for years. Old POS systems had some rather nice keyboards.
I rewired the keyboard to work on a PS/2 port but I could never get it to work with a USB adapter

Small update, I can't bring my self to cutting up the case to add a 240mm at the bottom. the 800d is rather old and I don't want to cut it up. So I'll just put a 120mm and 360mm in the case, maybe a 140mm in the bottom of the case were the 140mm fan is.

Well this sucks, the z690 dark I got is a dud. I just can't have any luck these days lol. I did some trouble shooting but it jut will not power on, no post codes or anything. EVGA wants to replace it with a refurb witch is better then a dead board but I did just buy it so yeah, not happy. Looks like this goes on the back burner for now wile I RMA the board egh.

OK so EVGA offered a refund as appose to a refurbish board. IDK why they could not send me a new board since they are in stock . No way I'm taking a refurbished when the board I just bought is DOA. So I'm reluctantly sending the board back for a refund. I was going to buy a replacement form the boards they have in stock but I chose to take things a different directions.
I'm running out of space in my office. I have 3 PCs in my little office on top of a 75gal fish tank. Adding a 4th.. well its going to make things worse, the room is maybe 12x5ft so its small. swapping the 800d for a smaller case would save a lot of space. so I'll be going small form factor.
New build parts.
Asus pro-b660m-c-d4-csm fractal design define Mini C case
i3 12100f, yes a i3. 16gb dd4. 512gb WD black NVME SSD 2 2tb Hdds in raid 1 980ti SC with koolance block/backplate 750w PSU. D5 pumps with XSPC res if it fits. 240mm rad. Heatkiller IV CPU block. 500/800 RPM fans. blood red 1/2 tubing. black fittings. Black clamps. Black cables. Sound blaster titanium HD OS will be ether Linux or 10 CRT monitor, 2048×1536@85Hz. hence the 980ti
The board witch i have one hand supports over clocking believe it or not. well not on locked CPUs and its options are very limited.
Anyway I get the rest of the water cooling parts tomorrow and will start on the build then.

Ok so I got the system together but I need to do a little TCL on the wiring before posting photos. the D5 top/res I had did not fit well, I will need to get a smaller one if I want the system to look right. The pump is a bout .5-1cm to tall and sticks out above the cut out for the PSU cover tray. It works but looks dumb. I will ether remove the tray or get a smaller pump res combo. I also had to remove the 3.5' bays in the case to fit the pump, I will have to get 2.5' drives to replace the 3.5' ones. No big deal as they are just for storage. Once I get the wiring cleaned up I will post photos.

I can't wait to see it. Other then the pump sticking out of the PSU cover/tray it turned out good. Once I get the cables cleaned up I'll be posting photos. Also the CPU idles at 24c, that is only about 3c over room temp. I am worried about load temps. With just a slim 240mm rad it might get toasty. But I'm just cooling a i3 and 980ti so it should work fine. I want to get a new lower power GPU down the road anyway, so if its hot I can just grab like a 3060 or something.

So there are a few things I would like to do to the system before its 100% done. I need a smaller pump/res combo so I can put the cover back over the PSU cover tray. I need to get 2.5' drives to replace the 3.5' drives I had to remove form the system to fit the pump. The tubing I bought was suppose to be blood red, its more dark orange, I'm thinking of getting black or clear tubing.
With both the GPU and CPU at max load it's 55c on the CPU and 45c on the GPU. witch is not bad for 800rpm fans and a slim 240mm rad.
How ever I did find that when the 980ti is maxed out under a load the sound card makes buzzing noise so I will have ti find a fix for that.

I played around a little with pump speed and found that running the D5 pump at full speed dropped temps by about 8c. But a d5 being a d5 its kinda loud. So I'm running it at 50%. Also the CPU is running at max turbo so its sorta overclocked. Anyway so far the system is running fine outside the sound card having interference when the GPU is loaded. I tired moving the PSU slots around and it made no diffidence. Its looking like a ground loop problem and given the bard I'm using that is no surprise. There are a few Bios settings I will mess with and if that dies not fix it I will get a grounded shield for the card. If somehow it still is buzzing try one of those scammy snake oil add-on cards that is suppose to clean up the PCIe lain. Other then that I can't think of anything to try.
After I fixed the buzzing from the sound card I will seal up all the vents in the case so that more air is pushed through the rad. There are vents under the case and buy the PCIe slots.

I"m still fighting to find a fix for the interface/buzzing sound when the GPU is under a load. How ever I got one SSD installed in the system behind the mobo tray, I will post photos of that tonight. I also found a 90deg fitting that is leaking and might have to drain the system and swap the fitting out. I can't tell if its leaking from the threads or the swivel, but I tightened as much as I could and hope that fixes it.
EDIT: I found were the buzzing was coming from! The 3.5mm jack found it way around the power cable and the ground wire in my amp had broken lose, after soldering the wire back and move the 3.5mm jack away from the PC's power cable the buzzing and clicking is gone.
