Ok, my 2002 VW Jetta is a champ. 2 point slow litre engine with superb fuel economy. BUT... it has 296 thousand miles on it. Burns a little oil. Needs exhaust, front end work, a new a/c compressor, a new windshield and other minor various repairs.... you know a typical 500 dollar beater with a heater.
Im looking at 2014/15/16 Caddilac CTS. Motor options 2.0T i4, 3.6L V6 or the CTV model which I'm not interested in.
.
Do you guys think I should go V6 or take chances on the 2.slow with a turbo? My original thought is 2.0, but the V6 doesn't look to be much worse on fuel economy, though I'd prefer to spend less at the pump.
I haven't read much about issues with these cars either. I don't care, diagnostics and repairs I'll do myself anyways.
Whatcha fellas think? I haven't owned a nice car for myself in many years. It's time to finally splurge I think!

Depends on the mileage and price.

Most of them look to have less than 100k and garage kept. Pricing looks 18k to 22k for that range of years.

About right. Buy the lowest mileage you can find. Don't worry about motor size.

More and more 4 banger today are out doing v6's these days. Heck my 2019 fiesta with a 1.6l ztech can spin the tires in second gear 100% stock. Now that I have a CIA, cat back, light alloy wheels I can't put my foot down all the way without braking traction in 1st gear and sometime second and 3rd.
Turbos are also fun and open up a lot of room for more power if need be.

4 cylinder inline motors just have low end torque lackluster, in my opinion. Only interested in fuel economy and luxury at this time. The turbo isn't appealing to me because I know if a turbo eats shit, there's a 50% chance it takes the rest of the motor with it.
I suppose interference engines could be said the same thing if it where to drop a valve in naturally aspirated engines. I should research GM V6 for that fact to help decide on engine type and size.
Just tired of driving a beater. 20 years now. Beater after beater the wife has had all the nice cars. My turn.

From what I'm reading the CTS 4 banger has more torque then the v6. 295 for the 2L and 15/15 v6's have 274 and 16 has 285. Good numbers all around TBH. Peck power on the V6 is a lot a lot higher in the rev range too witch is odd.
But I get you on the turbo, one more thing to go bad, and when they go bad it's expressive.

Same story with me having the drive all the junk, even after she trashes the "Good" ride which happened more than once and it was her fault. I told here the next time she does it and it's her fault as to why it happened, she gets the junk. No accidents/trashed vehicles since.... Well, she did roll into the back of a pickup once at a light and bumped it's hitch - 100% her fault and 0% damage to the truck she bumped. The small hole she put in the front of the car is still there and it's what I'm driving now. It's fiberglass so it's not a big deal, it's there and that's about it. Speaking of turbo engines, yeah - Those can be expensive to deal with. Best thing you could do with a turbo is keep the oil changed out regularly, use something like Lucas everytime you change it so the turbo gets oil ASAP and to help protect it from oil viscosity issues from heat - Esp if running it hard. Engine cooling system is VERY important on a turbo car because they run hotter than a naturally aspirated engine does as a a norm because of the turbo which is why I mentioned about using Lucas in the oil to help offset oil viscosity issues from heat. I know the difference a turbo can make since I used to race one at the track on weekends - That was the 72 Pinto you guys have seen me mention before.

A 2015 Cadillac CTS with about 70 grand on the clock will probably fetch between 22k and 25K. Those ain't cheap. I too may be looking for a fresh set of wheels Jon. I'm thinking a Toyota Rav4 4WD. Used car prices are still too high though. My 2013 Grand Caravan just turned 21,000 miles so I'm keeping that. But the 30 year old Buick Century may be going bye bye. Parts are getting hard to find.

4 bangers have come a very long way. For sure. My Jetta 2.0 is 115hp. And it's 30mpg all day, doesn't matter how you drive it either. It doesn't go faster if you floor it, just makes more noise. Had a 3800 gen 1 in my Olds royal brougham. About 200hp and that car would move. These days I think they changed the displacement to 3.5l or 3.6l made em a little smaller. Not sure why, the 3800 was pretty much the perfect V6 GM engine.

Honestly if I had to get rid of that Buick I would miss it. It's been with me since new. Those 3300 V6 engines were really good. It's a shame they only made them for a few years. A Turbo Charged 3300 V6 would have been awesome. Especially if GM had made a Buick Century Grand National Edition in these model years. As it is this little sucker lights em up but with the price of tires today I try to avoid that as much as possible.

It does have a nice ride that's for sure. Had a 1989 Olds Delta 88 Royal Brougham Eddie. It was a nice car too. That had the 3800 in it. It was a pretty quick ride. The cutlass my wife had was a base model with the 4 banger. Like yours but not even close to that nice of condition lol. I sold it to some high school kid for 250 bucks. Lol

I had a 1984 Oldsmobile Delta 88 Brougham with the 307 V8. Fully loaded. Was like a freaking Cadillac inside. One of the nicest luxury cars I have ever had. I miss that car.

I am leery about anything with gasoline direct injection and high-pressure fuel systems. Outside of that everything is fair game. Each model from every brand has its own set of problems built in and there seems to be no escaping the fact. My neighbor put like 300K on his loaded Crown Vic that he used to go from here to Arizona every year. After his wife passed he bought himself a mint Caddy that he uses to go back and forth to Alberta and Arizona. I didn't ask what it was worth because it was more than I could afford pal Congrats buddy
