I got the lids off mine but I put the wafer in the socket and put Gelid over the Die then put the lid on and close the load plate down. Mainly because the original paste cracks under cold. The wafer is only paper thin and not strong you wouldnt be able to put much pressure on it without it cracking.

Thermal Grizzly cryonaut is better for cold. Right down to -180.

Bit of a thread necro here - Popped the lid off of my 3770K (Finally) and TIM'ed it with Noctua, I have one core running warmer than the rest by at least 10C (Core 3) but the others look to be fine. I don't know if it's common to see this with an Intel or not but I do intend on removing the lid and redoing the TIM job. Removed the lid by simply using the vice out at the shack, had it placed so the vice itself did the work and was able to pop the top right off no prob. No hammering or anything like that needed to remove it.

What I'm seeing is the other three cores are really close, core 3 itself is about 10C hotter or more at times and it's been as much as 25C warmer on occasion. Could be a wonky sensor causing it but I don't think so - I did remove the lid this morning, redid the TIM job with Noctua, resealed the chip and just a few minutes ago I retested - Same result seen in HWmonitor as before.
So.... I'll keep running it for now and hope the temps on that core will eventually settle over time.
Thanks for the advice.
