In my workshop, as a workhorse have an Asus M4A77T and PII X4. Re-built of spare parts some three years ago. Since the xh Formula IV is now sitting cold, exploring a chance to "upgrade" the workhorse with the XHFIV. compared to the older Pros: support SATA III PCI-e 2.0 USB3
Con: Will need a 8-pin PSU cable, so may need to shift PSUs around. The M4A77T runs perfectly @3.7GHz/1800Mhz DDR3 but the two items above are not on level with the GPU and SSD in use. Then the matter, should I use an FX or older PII X4 in the Formula. The FX-8300 did not OC well on the xh, but have another FX on the shelf. I might try out a cardbox build+OC 1st to see if the Formula is still a better choice, although it is old. It is not for gaming but thinking at least the SATA III might be worth.

Had some time after work today, so went ahead tore out the M4A77T & PSU and replaced it with the Formula. Decided to try with a smaller FX cpu to begin with. Worked quite well, brief session with overclocking.

Tuned it down a bit, this works so far. Weird issues at POST, reverts to stock frequency at random will. Reboot cures it. CMOS battery is new. The POST issue is likely due to OC but not sure where to "tune it in". Its BIOS settings are not too easy to interpret. Another thing is the wake up from "sleep" behavior, it attempts to start but then "no show". This may be due to mb swap & not reinstalling OS, other culprit could be the GPU's driver. Welp, no mission critical stuff in this unit. It is a workhorse, in a sense

for the post issue, I'd ease up on the memory timings or up the Dram voltage a smidge if you're not already up on it.

Thanks Vin. The RAM voltage should be ok, it is the same RAM I used with the M4A77T and it flew good there. There is some other sh´t with this POST, will need to iron it out More suggestions from forum members are welcomed

Don't use 'sleep' or 'hibernate'. Creates nothing but problems trying to switch C states. Set a static vcore and go with it.

blunder here. Noticed this thing sometimes would freeze when left alone. Checked in BIOS and see DRAM voltage was set to auto. Must've missed it when I checked other things. Upped it a bit, let us see if it cures.

Still issues with POST when even some form of OC applied, other than that it runs very well when booted up, even when overclocked. I bought the board 2nd hand so do not know exact history of what it has been through, however it now seem to be a candidate for retirement. Maybe can juggle with AMD overdrive a bit still.
EDIT:
Decided to try out the Phenom II X4 850 to see if POST issues would clear out. And it would seem so. And now also the wake from "Sleep" works. So likely something with AM3+ CPU compatibility with FX890 board, one might think. Now to see if can unlock L3 with this board...
EDIT2: Yes, 6MB L3 unlocked also, Core Unlocker in BIOS. Interestingly CPU-Z says Propus Code name when L3 is not there, and Deneb when L3 included

Be nice if i could try to tap into the Sabertooth R2.0 and get core/cache unlocking working Still issues with POST when even some form of OC applied, other than that it runs very well when booted up, even when overclocked. Crosshair IV is a AM3 board not a AM3+ board it has a white socket on it not a black AM3+ socket dont expect everything to work properly with a AM3+ CPU. AM3+ should be put in a 900 series chipset board.

AM3+ should be put in a 900 series chipset board. Correct. I did not expect it to act in a same way as fx8xx and 9xx. Just trying to figure out why it would not perform as some "brag" about. But no worries.

I know there is a bios on the Asus website that is for using FX CPUs but from what I have heard it still doesnt work properly
