Decided to retire my Crosshair IV Formula. Would not play nice at even a light OC with a FX-8300. The Formula likely would run with better stability using a Phenom II, but did not feel like going with that, although have a couple of them.
On the shelf had a Gigabyte GA-970A-DS3P, just replaced the motherboard. Turned out was forced to use Legacy boot on the 970A even though it supports UEFI. Followed this guide and converted the drive to UEFI. www.maketecheasier.com/convert-legacy-bios-uefi-windows10/This board is so much easier to do a little overclock with, compared to the issues I had with the xh IV Formula.

Sorry for your trouble, the CH 4 came out before AM3+ was in full swing. I have a 990FX Sabertooth R2.0 with latest bios from 2016 with FX 8350 at 5.0 GHz on Scythe Ashura cooler.

Not so much to do today(snow is melting, rain showers going on), so I pulled out the 970A-DS3P v1.0. Surprised it still feels so fast, light OC set been kept. Younger son have the same motherboard, but think it is pushed a bit harder even, and he have good RAM in the box. I just run with cheap RAM&PSU in this, but it still runs, no hiccups.
No wonder he does not to want to upgrade the HW. But yes, he has also seen a few BSODs in past on other systems, due to whatever reasons, and AFAIR he did not tinker with OC much.
Just noticed, the NB sink is very hot, would not like to tinker with pulling the MB out of the case and doing a re-paste would help. Anyway, that much I checked that it is not "glued" to the NB, so I hope the old paste still works (welp, since the NB HS is hot, trying to do its job).
And I am just fed up with all kinds of case air fans making noise, even though they might work fine when new, but somehow the bearings wear out. And I have no need to put water cooling in my rigs, we have annually 10 months of cold weather outdoors.

I've had a few 970s.. the NB being between 70-90c is a normal temp. It's when you get beyond 105c is when there is any level of concern.
the ones I had out there, I upgraded the heatsink with one that has a 40mm fan and all the MB's had a connector right there... on one Asus board I had, I was able to just add a 40mm fan to the existing heatsink. Again there was a fan plug right there...
either solution brought the temps to the 50's low 60s...

Thanks Vin. Yes, I also estimated some 70-90°C on the NB, by finger touch.

Thanks Vin. Yes, I also estimated some 70-90C° on NB by finger touch. So you left a little skin on the heat sink? 90c is hot as fuck to touch with a finger XD

yes, still have skin on my finger tip so I guess the NB temp is a tad below 90°C.

Unfortunately no. Been running with the side panel off, due other experiments, but yes, I should consider how to improve air flow within the case. Just need to go through my spare fans to find one that do not sound like B747 take off.
EDIT: Came to think of it, have a room temp meter, with a wired sensor, could attache the wire to the NB HS and see what readouts it would give.

90c is twice what any NB should be at. Better check that out.

^yes, not sure exactly how hot it is, but have to remove finger from heat sink within a second. The NB frequency is currently at 2310Mhz, I assume that it still a "safe" value.

I agree that 90⁰ is way too high. But even 60⁰ can be really uncomfortable to touch, so without using a thermometer you can't really tell. What voltage is your northbridge at? Not CPU/NB. I forget if GB even lets you change that on this board but it's good to check if possible. IIRC stock is 1.1 or 1.2v.

^I have not checked whether can change NB voltage. But AFAIR, it is running stock voltage, did not change anything there back in the day.

^I have not checked whether can change NB voltage. But AFAIR, it is running stock voltage, did not change anything there back in the day. depending on the board, it'll be on Auto with can sometimes be tuned high.might be able to set it lower to help.
also if it's a gigabyte board, you could install easytune to see what the temps really are.

^yes, I have Easytune6 on the 78LMT, for fan control. Had it for a while on this 970-DS3P, but did not find any use of it so I removed it.

but with it you could see the NB temps and not have to lose skin to check if it's hot.
pop a 40mm fan on the HS and setup the fan profile in the bios.

I could not see any ref. to NB temp in Easytune6 on the GA-970-DS3P.

odd. I'll have to dig up the boards I was using back in the day. I had built 3 systems for family members and they were all 970 boards for cost (990s were available but pricey). 2 were gigs and the other an Asus. I'm 99% sure I was getting temps from ET6 on the Gigs and I used AISuite on the Asus. That's how I was getting the actual temps. That triggered a support call Gigabyte to make sure shit was ok cause I was getting the same thing on all 3 systems -/+ 2-3 degrees.. Vin
EDIT: the gigs were GA-970A-D3's, I jsut found one of the boxes.
