Have recently got some DDR3 LGA 775 boards in. It's always something that I've wanted to have a go at Overclocking. Gigabyte X48T DQ6 FOXCONN X48 Blackops
Memory Corsair Dominator - Hyper 2000mhz CL8 Corsair Dominator - Micron 1600 CL8 Corsair XMS3 DHX - Micron 1600 Cl7 Just can't seem to get the boards to either clock higher than 440-460ish MHz without getting memory errors even at lowest dividers not sure what I'm doing wrong
How much voltage for NB? I've been giving + 0.5v FOXCONN won't go over 450 and the Gigabyte won't boot 500 or higher This is with an E8500

I can't go over 480ish on Maximus 2F and P5Q the chips seem to want to the board nah. Had some success with messing with NB GTL but there is little to no control on my X48 boards This is with q9550 E0

Can't help you much on 775. I suck on that platform. I do know that quads are tough to get over 500. Best chipset for those is P45.

I have a few Gigabite boards and adjusting GTL makes things worst regardless of CPU.. have to leave it on Auto and I get what I get... I feel your pain

Yeah , bit annoying have tried a lot of settings and it doesn't want to budge. Was messing with Q9450 max I could boot was 479FSB. Have had Q9550 at 4.1ghz doesn't want to go higher than that did boot 4.2ghz stable did IBT was fine but never again could I get those settings to boot

I’ve got an x3360 and can’t get it over 477-479 with X48. Same board with a wolfdale was good for an easy 600fsb.

Yeah my Wolfdales have no issues going over 500fsb , just all mine suck here apart from this good e8400 that has a temp bug and always reports odd temps
Got somewhere with the gigabyte there is something in the bios called performance mode , i had it on standard as i thought that would be best. EXTREME seems to have got me stable at 400fsb now. going higher now.
binned this chip on my M2F does 4ghz 1.4v C1 step Q9550. thought it was garbage turns out not

Wow so I found something wacky I went for 3.6ghz thought oh I had LLC turned off crap. So put it on board crashed at windows screen (same volts)
Can't explain this at all? But LLC is causing the issue after 380ish FSB not sure what is up with that

Do you have to worry about strap settings? I found GTL's were useful for clocking wolfdales, not so much on newer or older quads. If they are useful on quads I couldn't figure it out. I am really rusty I would have to take it out of the box and plug it in, but just have a quad now so.. booo.

have had no issues clocking Wolfdale, have not had to mess with GTLs at all. ive been mostly cooling restrictive with the clocks

Me neither, what do you use for cooling?

Me neither, what do you use for cooling? Hyper 212 Evo with High CFM Fans. Hard to find decent stuff that fits 775. Was going to get the water kit but it sold for more than I wanted to pay

X48 not really happy with yorky's generally 440-460 fsb range with ambient cooling, Giga P45s about as good as it gets but also depends on model & Rev. Asus P45s will work but usually need software (setFSB) to get to 500+ fsb. NB & CPU GTLs I set to max .67 & .63 for yorkfield, kentsfield been to long ago. Two cores doesn't really matter much although for benching I treat them the same as yorky's. NB voltage depending on board 1.40v to 1.60v, keeping it cool helps. If you're new to the platform memory performance level setting is very important, some Asus boards use an offset in BIOS and never worked correctly, Memset is your friend. Do to the performance level setting 1:1 is not the best memory strap on DDR2 boards, hold over from the P965 days I think or a bunch of folks making do with crap DDR2 800. All Asus DDR2 X38/48 boards can be flashed to the RF BIOS.
Asus, Best X48 boards, my favorites RF & REX Gigagyte, Best P45 boards, my favorites GA-EP45-UD3R plain and T models Rev. 1.1, Use a UD3P for DDR2 memory testing. Biostar, TPower I45, great board but a heavy learning curve All hard to come by now a days.
My go to RAM DDR2 Patriot 1200 (D9) DDR3 Patriot 2000 (Hypers) DDR3 Crucial 2000 (First gen DDR3 bought with my first REX), used in the early days before I lost my voltage phobias.
Bunch of general statements from my playing, hope something helps.

Ive got the P5Q3 Deluxe on the way just needs some repair gets stuck as chassis intruded. yeah with the ASUS it feels like a memory issue as i had 4.2ghz booted one time but then never again. could not get the gigabyte x48 to clock 3.7ghz was the max poor GTL settings. I got the P5K Premium in the other day and it did 560FSB i am limited by my memory and not the board.not good for quads but good for the duos Have ASUS X38 Maximus Formula SE at home Need to get it shipped over. have S2E but i heard 790I ultra aint that great will look out for those boards you said thanks for the help

P35's are great 2 core boards, used a GA-EP35-DS4 converted to S771 a lot. Have a P5Q3 Deluxe that works but CPUz won't read the RAM on the board.

There is only one board type (family) what can do high fsb quad oc (45 nm). These are the Gig P45(T) Ud3R/ud3p. With one of those You can go 500+ even without giving high voltages. Any other board usually ends somewhere 480-500. You can do this with a P35 even. It depends mostly the "harmony" of the actual chip and the board(the bios). hwbot.org/submission/3045604_alpi_cinebench___r15_xeon_x5460_515_cbBut with the magic Ud3 ones (+with well cooled nb) You can pass the 500 fsb barrier quite easily. hwbot.org/submission/3432359_alpi_superpi___32m_xeon_e5450_10min_18sec_281msNforce 790i is a very interesting build ! Pretty unique behaviours and features. I like them but usually those are not ones, ppl like and I can understand why. Not easy boards and not really top performers too. Unfortunatelly ggod ddr3 boards with real good performance are not mcuh than a small pack of Asus X48 type. Those are very good for fsb (with 2 core cpus) and performance (mem perf.) too. All of them are quite rare and / or pricy.
