so, i managed to grab a 3300x on the ocau site, which was pretty good given they are out of stock here for the foreseeable future
then i had a moment of paranoia that it wouldn't be supported without a bios flash, which would necessitate me pulling the 3600 out of my mortar max (a major pain to undertake), and by then it was in transit, so i couldn't check with the vendor
anyhoos, it turned up, and to my relief it was good to go - there's a sticker that asrock put on the bios chip signifying which version is there - what a great and obvious asset
in my research for updates, it was revealed that the board already has available bios to upgrade for the new 5 series cpu/s, up to 5950x ! the mortar max wil be waiting till at least january, so i was pretty impressed
also, the bios is impressively tidy to navigate after the dog's breakfast that is the mortar max, even though that board is great in terms of hardware; the asrock isn't quite as granular in the steps for voltage, but boy! all the subtimings and infinity stuff is well covered
for anyone looking for a cheap option to play with ryzen, i can vouch for the value asrock offer

Glad it worked. I'm not a fan of AsRock, but do enjoy their bios layout better than MSI.

i've got a sandy/ivy asrock board for the htpc for over half a decade now, and it has been (as)rock solid
dunno for fierce clocking, but as a daily it's fine
the mortar max got great write ups; it's my first msi since socket a, when i was encouraged to swap my first one out for the asus a7n8x deluxe by the bespoke builder i had employed (i chose it for the bright red colour more than knowledge), and i stuck with asus and then giga (which i preferred, and could "drive") for almost 2 decades, occasional detours into dfi and abit nf7 uber clocking boards aside
what's the problem with asrock (one year warranty noted) ?

That came out wrong. I should have said I don't use them as daily, there's nothing wrong with AsRock, I've used their boards. My bad experiences not everyone has. Never have done extreme overclocking on an AsRock board that I can remember.
The boards that AsRock has released that I really do like are the weird ones. Like AsRock Dual sata II 939 that you could get an AM2 riser card.

i remember that frankenboard ! I had one. Blew up an FX-55 and the board doing a volt mod with not the correct equipped cooling. lol. Or I did the mod wrong which is 100% possible XD.
