Yeah, I don't think its overheating. The heatsink only fits one direction on Socket A due to the indent at the one side of the socket. That "shouldn't" be the problem. I do have one Socket A rig up and running, and that one was easy to get going (the older T-Bird).

So we have an update today kinda. Huge shout out to the 2 guys here at W9 that had what I needed and lent me a hand. Thank you sooo much guys, this rig actually works now! Specs: Gigabyte GA-7N400S AthlonXP 3200+ Thermaltake Volcano 7 CPU cooler 2x1GB Corsair XMS DDR400 Sapphire X850 Creative Live! 5.1 Intel NIC Wifi card, I forget what kind Adaptec ATA 133 RAID card Silverstone 550w I believe PSU And of course an IDE DVDRW + Lightscribe, ZIP250, Floppy, and CF reader (for OS drive) System turns on. System recognizes everything (usually). System boots off CD. System will NOT properly format and install XP off CD due to some weird HDD error it keeps popping up on the SD cards (using a CF to SD adapter and CF reader). So not entirely sure what's going on.....but its actually doing the correct things its supposed to be doing. I'm sure its probably the CF to SD adapters or something stupid.

Unplug the card reader and try installing with that out.

Unplug the card reader and try installing with that out. It's not the reader at fault. It's an IDE reader btw, so the CF cards are recognized as IDE HDD's. I've bought 64GB CF Cards and tried in these readers before, and they wouldn't read over 32GB on those. I assumed at the time the cards were faulty or "scam" cards, so sent them back. Now with these microSD to CF adapters (and microSD cards), also 64GB, not a single one of them will actually format properly in these readers either. I'm thinking the reader won't recognize over 32GB OR there's a problem with these adapters and using SD cards in them. Hard to say. I was able to start the XP installation process on the HDD connected to the Adaptec IDE RAID card. When it rebooted, it started complaining about TLDR missing or something like that. I'm sure if I moved the HDD over to the onboard IDE channel it'd install to it fine honestly. The CF reader IS working to a degree. The drives are being recognized in BIOS properly on the IDE channels. Because its a formatting issue, I'm strongly thinking its just the size being over 32GB, and I'll just buy a couple more 32GB CF cards (real ones, not using adapters again), and see how that goes. Maybe even try out a 32GB microSD later on, but I want actual CF cards so I know the stupid things work this time.

I now have a couple 32GB SD cards incoming. I didn't think about grabbing some CF cards as those are expensive for the size I'm wanting, SD cards were stupid cheap. Hopefully those will work with my adapters and the limit is within the CF readers I'm using. We'll see. They should be in hopefully sometime this week.

why are you using the CF card? you have a on board sata and a pci sata card right?
EDIT: its worth noting most CF cards are junk for a OS drive when using windows, linux/dos is fine tho. And thats if you get a good CF card. OR so that has ben my experience.

I was choosing CF cards as OS drives (or SD with adapters) so I could easily swap OS's on these old rigs without tearing into them. That was my reasoning behind it. Getting SATA to work on XP, ME, and 98? Yeah I'll pass on that, so that was another reason. IDE = easier to install to.

Regardless, the problem then would arise that I'd have to redo the OS drive portion for all of these rigs, and figure out a 3.5" hot swap solution that'd work across all of these rigs. Win95, 98SE, ME, XP early, XP SP3, and XP x64 would all need to be redone for new OS drives.

Either way, the problem ended up being the microSD to CF adapters I was using. I just got some 32GB microSD cards in to test the theory if it was the format size or not. Nope, those cards gave the same error when trying to format. Put in my only 32GB actual CF card I had on hand at the time, and the AthlonXP rig is working. So yes, my AthlonXP rig is working now. Ordered 4 more 32GB CF cards (faster ones this time lol). Hopefully that'll finally be the missing link, since it was the adapters causing the problem. I also have more good news. Depending on if this AthlonXP rig hurries up on my bench or not (its been installing XP for hours now because this card is so slow), I have another rig finished! Specs: AMD K6-2 Gigabyte GA-5AX 256MB PC133 SDRAM Radeon 9250 WD 160GB IDE HDD Creative SB128 ZIP 250 CF reader obviously too DVD-ROM / CDRW combo CDRW drive I haven't fired it up as of yet. But it "should" in theory fire right up and work. Everything's been tested so far, so it should work. Fingers crossed.

I knew you'd figure it out, here's to a successful startup! The AthlonXP rig started giving me some issues last night. Figured out the 2x1GB kit of RAM I had in there was no good, so replaced with a 2x512 set I had. 1GB is enough for early XP anyway. It's installing XP to it again now. Hopefully successfully this time. It is working in full, I just need to figure out why XP is corrupting on install. Again, pretty sure that's sorted now though. The K6 rig POST's. Absolutely NONE of my drives had power to them and so I put it back up for now. One headache at a time. The K6 rig absolutely DOES POST successfully though, so board, CPU, RAM, and GPU are all good. Drives were all tested good when they arrived, so probably a messed up molex Y splitter or something causing a power problem is my guess on that one. I didn't feel like messing with it till the XP rig was working 100% though. Either way.....its showing massive promise. I should have them both done this week sometime I'm hoping. I did order more CF cards, screw it. I'll use those. I also did put a SSD into the XP rig. Whatever, it has SATA ports, you guys weren't wrong. I can always boot off a CF card for a secondary OS later if I wanted to, and NOT format the existing SSD too. So I can still OS swap on it if I wanted to. Either way, yeah things are progressing slowly but surely. I just need to send the CFX 939 board in for a recap, and repair 2 cases and I'll be done I think. Pretty sure everything's here that needs to be, and pretty sure I've tested everything. I might, MIGHT be missing a sound card or two, simple things. But yeah. Excited. These should all be 100% done by end of summer I'm hoping finally. I've said it before, but I mean....its all here now.

Okay, actual fix update. The AthlonXP doesn't seem to like my integrated fully up to date XP SP3 x86 CD I was trying to use. Made a new CD with XP SP2 x86, same one I used to use back in the day, and it installed fine. So AthlonXP build is finished "enough". It fully boots and everything shows up in device manager. I'll properly set it up later now that I know it works. The K6-2 rig is now recognizing the drives. The CF reader wasn't happy on the onboard IDE controller on the GA-5AX motherboard. Swapped it over to the Ultra100TX2 PCI card with the 160GB HDD in there, and its recognizing all the drives now. It too, is installing XP SP2 right now, just to make sure everything seems to work. So far, so good. I think it was the install CD I was using for half of the problems. That could be why my Athlon64 Socket 754 rig isn't working too well too, maybe that ISO was messed up. *shrugs It's fixed now. Now I just need to spend some time perfecting the installs on all of these rigs, and I need to finish the CFX 939 (if I'm going to), and the Win95 build.

Nice! Good to see you! Hope Christmas was good and the new year is good to you also! It was alright. I'll be honest, the best present I got this year was a hug from my dad. As you can see in the video, I've made a TON of progress in the apartment. We were able to move ALL of my spare equipment that's sensitive to the storage shed on my patio (with the heater). Everything that's not temperature sensitive (cables, adapters, case parts, fans, boxes, etc) are in my garage now. We also got my TV hung up in the living room where it belongs, and setup the surround sound. Had a ton of help over 3 days with a buddy of mine, Labrat (on the forums). Honestly, just having things cleaned up helped a lot. I've now bitten off a ton more than I can chew again with these projects......BUT, I'm pretty confident I can slowly work through all of these and get them all done.

You have a lot going on there for sure. But it looks organized well enough to manage it better now.
I'm sure that hug meant just as much to your dad. I'm certain he's proud of you!

Got a couple finished today. AM5 Build: 7900X 7900XTX Gigabyte B650 Aorus AX 32GB G.Skill Flare X DDR5-6000 HAF700 Berserker (with Orange Box goodies) Cooler Master 850w Platinum PSU Previous AM4 Build: 5800x 6900XT Asus B550-i ROG Strix 32GB Mushkin Enhanced DDR4-4000 Phanteks ITX case (forget model) Seasonic Focus Gold 1000w Still need to reassemble my FX build, I have everything here now to do so. That'll be next on the chopping block. From there, its just the K5 and the dreaded Crossfire 939 build that needs recapped, and the collection will be 100%. (other than GPU's because now I'm collecting those too)

Reassembled the FX build with a CHV in place of my Sabertooth. The Sabertooth had the 8pin welded to it....I think that may be the problem! Anyway, the FX is STILL causing me issues so I'm about fed up with this socket, but it needs to be finished. The new board doesn't support the NVME drive I was using, so I'm down to using 3x old SATA SSD's in a bundled RAID0 just so it functions. It's also freezing now at idle, BUT its also passing stability testing for 8+ hours with Prime95 as well. Also, its overheating at bone stock, so of COURSE I had to try to overclock it. Picky thing. -_- I'm going to ATTEMPT to mod the AIO with a 360mm radiator externally mounted, with a reservoir soon. I'm hoping a fresh filling of water into the pump might be the fix for the overheating, as I think its evaporated most of the water out. The pump is grumbling (but not dead yet). Also - needing to find the famous "win-raid.com" NVME modded BIOS for the CHV Formula. The only site I can find with references to that NVME modded BIOS, and the site's been taken down. Grrrr.
