It's been over 20 years since I had my old CB running, broke out of the closet and set it up. Needed a few things, nothing major and it's working fine except for the analog meter, that's kinda sticking right now. It was stuck but I worked on it and got it to start moving (some) again, I do plan on getting a new one later whether this one starts acting right again or not. Mounted the old 102 whip back in place and it's working. That's one of the things I used to do - Talk local with the guys and talk skip too, met alot of folks over the radio that way. The radio I'm using I bought brandnew back in the day and glad I chose it, it's a Uniden Grant XL, well known for being a good quality unit that performs very well - Considered about the best of the bunch period by many. The guys back then was telling me to get a Cobra 29 (Nothing wrong with those) but again, I'm glad I went my own way with this one. Also have an RCI Ranger 2950 that normally does well too, ATM it's not acting right but after sitting in a closet for 20+ years I'm not suprised. Only thing I can't do anymore is run power like I used to do or afford the extra batteries it took to run it. Something about a "Sweet Sixteen" that's rough on alternators..... Gee, I wonder why? Any of you ever talk on the radio?

Update: Got the Grant XL worked on and it's working right again, had some issues pop up from it sitting but all that has been taken care of and the Ranger's problems have been diagnosed, parts needed are on order. In addition I found a Cobra 77X and got it for a backup, needs a fix as well but that shoudn't be a big deal to take care of. I'm also thinking about setting up a base with one of these radios but that's something for later on as in way later if I do it at all.
All I'm really doing ATM is getitng things like they were before and if that goes well enough I'll leave things as they are now and carry on.

Boy this brings back memories Rods. I do believe the model I had was the Cobra 29 XLR. If I'm remembering right that is the one I had in my '78 Pontiac Trans Am. It had twin Road Hog Antennas that had been trimmed and tweaked out and it was tuned, peaked, sideband and had some upgraded mic I got at a place called the CB Hut in Chicago. It was a very strong radio. I routinely talked to boats out on Lake Michigan from my garage. That was about 30 miles from my location which was pretty good. On really good nights when it was calm out I could speak to people as far away as Canada. Sometimes I could hear conversations much further out than that. I thought it was pretty cool at the time.
