well, so much for the asrock steel legend i think
the lights briefly flicker on when applying power at the back, and then it's d...e...d -dead!
the psu checks okay when shorted, but the whole thing fails to power when plugged properly
clearing the bios makes no difference
the cpu was second hand but has been doing great till today; the ram was new when i put it in my own rig, and i handed it on when i upgraded to the b-dies
any suggestions for other troubleshooting i might try ?

Sonds like a shorted CPU VRM to me try uplugging the 8 pin CPU power and booting if it stays on the problem is in the VRM or the CPU probably the VRM. CPUs dont die usually unless you are giving them wild voltages. Oh and it wont boot without the CPU power but if it stays on thats where your problem will be.

no joy
all that happens is that when the mains power to the psu is switched on, the onboard led bling lighting flashes momentarily (blue only) and then nothing
the fans attached to the board, and even the psu fan don't twitch, but the psu fan (and the mechanical hdd attached to it) spin up if i short the psu on 4&5

I would try another one just to be sure.

i already did, but it only had 4 pins for the aux to cpu even so, same brief blue led from the bling, then nothing at all
the one in the rig is a corsair cx450m, not quite 2 years old, still in warranty i would expect
i have the corsair in my main build, but no way i'm pulling that out...

crap, sorry to hear. if it was a gigabyte I'd suggest the battery out for 24hrs. That has done odd wonders for their boards.

Have had lots of weird issues with boards..ok try these.
Remove everything except CPU,GPU,PSU,RAM. Remove front usb, front pannel connectors. Then try. If it fails run outside the case. (Sometimes a case or bad usb connectors cause PSU to turn off due to shorts.
Try removing the CPU cleaning the pins/socket. Try turning on without the CPU.
Leave the board off for while no power going into it CMOS battery removed.
Try lightly banging the motherboard on a cardboard box (must think I'm insane) but this has fixed 2 motherboards I had.

Test the cmos battery voltage. Maybe it's low? CLear cmos overnight while you sleep on it. There's always tomorrow

i believe your diagnosis is correct, scott
breadboard attempt at power on = blue bling and then nothing
hooked up the same psu to the 775 build of yesteryear and it jump started instantly; vendor already sent rma instructions, so not a total disaster, just a break for mr 18 from endless minecraft and among us

late update they replaced the asrock with the repaired version of the same i'm pretty sure a month later it shat again with exactly the same behaviour after some "negotiating" paypal gave an almost full refund ( a few dollars less, although i initially refused to accept it and demanded full reparation given all the dicking round required, but they paid out the reduced amount anyway because it was some months old... !!! ) ah well... shortly thereafter amazon were selling the msi mortar b450m for $138aud delivered - and better the devil i know, set up for mr 18 and it is still raging almost 3 months later and being used almost constantly i can highly recommend that board
