Had the guy I'm letting do the work on it pick up the old warhorse today to get started on getting it back into shape. Lots of work to be done but to me it's worth it, esp since I've had it for so long and it's served me well. Specs on it: 91 Chevrolet S10 Drivetrain: 4.3Ltr / 5-speed / 4X4 Mileage: More than enough. Work to be done: Paint and body work. Fuel system problem fixed - New fuel sock and pump plus clean out the fuel tank. Brakes and suspension checked. Engine checked for overall condition with new hoses and belt, if need be a new engine will be set in place. Tuneup if engine is healthy enough and oil change plus replace leaky lines to factory remote oil cooler. Check clutch itself, fix problem with hydraulic system to the clutch. Fix problem with driver's window popping off track. Fix broken parking brake cable. That's all I can think of off the top of my head, I made a list of things I wanted done and he has it. I'll also post up before and after pics, starting with the obvious before pics.

My 94 1500 has the same motor. 175k miles on it. I cant stand that engine. Spider injected garbage. No offence to your truck, but Id like to swap mine for a 350. Would bolt right up.

You got the crappy version of it's fuel system, this one is TBI. Like yours it's a direct bolt-up BUT I've already had a V8 S10 before and already know it's a pain to keep from overheating.
Since I really need it as a working truck than as a toy I'll try to keep it as is.
However..... Don't think I woudn't pop a V8 in if the engine is bad for some reason and the swap can be done cheaply enough. Stock to almost stock would be fine for this.

4.3 5-speed and 4x4. That sounds like a fun little truck. I saw one kinda like that once with a Baja Package on it. Light bars, roll bars. Neat little truck.

S-10's are junk. Only one's I would even consider are the Typhoon or Cyclone.

All I can say is this one never left me on the side of the road without good reason, which was only once it ever did quit over the 22 years of me owning it and had a good reason then.
Even now it will start up and run but the reason it won't "Run" right now was the fuel tank got dirty from sitting over the rat-attack it endured and by the time I got the wiring sorted the gas had gotten old and had a ton of crap clogging up the fuel sock. New sock and a new pump with a good tank cleaning is the thing with that. I can prime the carb and it fires right up but that's it.
I do have to say even now with all the miles it has it's a torquey little bastard, next to no gas required to pull off and get rolling from a dead stop. If you try to get it moving like most gas burners you'll overtorque it (Drivetrain shudder) and like a diesel it loves low RPM shifts too.

This is like the one I'm talking about Rods. A couple young guys in the neighborhood had one and they ran the shit out of it. I wouldn't mind taking something like this for a cruise.

That's kind of like how this one is. Has the heavy suspension under it (Off road/Towing package) with the remote oil cooler. Only real difference is the extras the one you pictured has like the lightbar and extra bars to protect the grille area. Believe me when I say I've taken it off road before, did really well but only for a few times. Aside from that it's been ran as a regular pickup.
I will also say once you get it out on the highway it will cruise. Interstate travelling for it is a breeze and gets good gas mileage doing it, loves to run with traffic like it's nothing and the only thing it's missing is cruise control - Wasn't equipped with it. Although it has the suspension for offroad it's suprisingly comfortable on the interstate.

TBI is slightly better, but still the motor is meh at best. Under powered. I saw you mention torque.... and also has a 5 speed. Put a 4 speed automatic in place of that 5 speed you'd change your mind on it. 160hp and less than 300 foot pounds of torque. I could be wrong, maybe slightly higher than that.... Would have to look it up. Any how, drives like a dog and consumes about as much fuel as the V8's. It was really more of an economy engine then it was to be a working engine even though you could get it fitted in Chevy WT pickups. A swap on that truck would be super easy. Even a 305 would be a night and day difference. But I'm not trying to change your mind on what to do with it. Just going based off experiences with that 4.3L engine. I like the body style for sure on them s10's. I'm with Pete, can't wait to see it all finished up!!

These were never intended to be like the big boys. These are "toy trucks". The neighbors I had would just pop that clutch and go burning rubber with it down the block. Cute truck. The kids went muddin' with there's. What a mess.

My brother had a couple of ford rangers. We did all that stuff. Pulled a guy out of the ditch but took 8 people in the bed to have the weight to do it. Fun times. We did a lot of drinking off the tail gate too.

I know the 4.3's in full sized bodies were indeed underpowered, not arguing that point at all here, I just know this one can and does do well. I don't know everyone's experience with whatever, I just know this one has done everything I've ever needed it to do without complaint and in the end that's all you can ask for.
I'm past the point of doing much more than just driving it anyway, it's good for what I'll be using it for and best of all it's paid for.

The 4.3 was pretty good in the Chevy Astro Van too. My Dad had one and never had a lick a trouble with it. He put 300,000 on that engine with normal maintenance done to it. I think the only major issues were a clogged egr valve and intake gaskets. I did those and it was fine again. My Dad always takes good care of his stuff.

I've eyeballed a few newer 325cui engines from the early 2000s. Gotta have the ECM and wiring harness, but I think it would fit right under the hood of my 1500 short bed. LT engines. Not LS.

Same here, this one is closing in on the 300,000 mark as is but still doing OK.
I did tell him to check it and if I have to I'll get a replacement engine or just build the one in it now, either way works.
If I get a wild hair up my ass for a V8 I'll get a 350 or possibly do a build based on a 350 block but would be a 327 instead once done.
Grab a 307 crank with the right pistons and rods and just make it happen.
And it's gotta have a "Little" cam in it too regardless.
Whatever is cheaper is the way I'll go.

Ooooh, a quarter cam in a lightly tweaked 327. I think I'm dripping. ROFLMAO

Turbo charge that thing! Needs forced induction if you are going to be driving it for any length of time. lol
Looking forward to completed pics

Looks like a very nice truck and project to restore and you know it well. I have grown out of using manual gear and without turbo charge since 20 years ago. Before that, it was a preferred choice. I do drive manual gear now and then, but it is too "cumbersome" in congested traffic & roads.

Thanks George, it's always been reliable but the time to repay it's loyalty has finally come. If I want to keep it, I'll have to give back to it for standing with me all this time.

OK - It's done and here it is. I still have work to do but what was the worst is fixed now, at least it looks like a pickup again. One of the next things to do is start going through the front end and replace what's worn out. Ball joints themselves got replaced before the work was done, other things are in need and will do that one piece at a time starting with the worst and going from there. Engine still runs fine and as long as that's true I'm not messing with it, I'll just maintain it and keep going. The windshield/windscreen needs replacement and that's another item I'll be checking out when I can.
