I had a '78. 400 Pontiac motor and a turbo 400. I hated that car. T roofs leaked no matter what I did.

Big block Pontiac 400.
Not the Olds 403 motor or the Chevy 400. A real Pontiac motor.

Mine did too Scotty, the body flex was crazy on that car. I stiffened the frame, put an after market body bushing kit on it and GM had a kinda sorta recall on the t-top gaskets too. I had the W72 Package, which man I paid way too much for. That's why I had to have two jobs to pay for it. I should have just got the L78 and built it up myself. I could have gotten a lot more out of it and I think would have been a better place to put my money. But honestly, I didn't buy the car for it's performance. I bought it cause it was pretty and it put a lot of girls in the passenger seat. I don't know what the horse power rating was but it did get up and go. Having a few family members at G.M. at the time parts and fixes were no problem at all. It had an annoying problem with the windshield wiper on the drivers side hitting the pillar at full speed. It got wrecked, rebuilt and sold. And then I got another one. What a hard headed kid I was.
Edit: you wanna make a Trans Am owner cry like a baby? Put a scratch on the eagle on the hood of his car. I guarantee big tears.
Edit 2: Performance cars and t-tops don't go together. Had a similar issue with an '87 Grand National. Body flex.

I cooked the tranny in mine. Sold the car to my cousin. He put one in and drove it for a couple years. I flew to Denver and drove my next project back. '67 Bird convertible.

The bird needed a new top. The rest of it was nice. 74K on it. Red with Red guts. 326 and a powerglide. I paid 800. 3 days to get home and only had to replace the waterpump along the way. 1 day after home, 326 out, 455 in.

Anything can make big power if you throw enough money at it. Boost is one way, sure. The pure Pontiac motors had a flaw. They don't rev. They were long stroke torque monsters. 5K was leaning on the rev limiter. 5300 if you had a billion dollars into it. As long as you don't rev 'em, they stay together.

Yes. Had a solid lifter 455 grenade on me. Cheap Mallory rev limiter failed at the track.

I was just talking intrinsic value for drag cars specifically; sure you can dump boatloads of cash into any motor and make power but I thought there was something special about the Pontiac big blocks of the day.
