My brother had one of these things. I never liked it, thought it was cheap and crappy and they rusted like mad. Drove like crazy in deep snow though, couldn't stop it in winter. They would not last long at all here in Chicago. Salt would eat them up real fast.
This guy cracks me up:

For some reason cars from Germany rust like mad, had a 77 Rabbit once that the floorboards rotted out and even went so far as to rust the brakelines - And yes that's how I found out when I hit the brakes and suddenly I had NO brakes!
Shame really, the engine ran like a top (Perfect to the point the exhaust pipe's end was white inside like a sheet of paper) and the gas mileage was great. When I got rid of it the engine was still running like a song but all the rest was just rusted.

My brother's feet fell thru the floor board of his Beetle one snowy winter day in '78. The car was running great. In fact he got a heater for it(didn't come with heat)from Warshawsky Auto Parts just before this happened. He junked it after that. He had a couple of these things. I hated them. But they really were popular.
I remember seeing a commercial for these once where they touted the car was built so tightly that it could float.
Bullshit. LOL

Actually it could float but had to not be rusted out to do so. It's weird they put so much engineering into it but only to skimp on the rust protection part of it.... Maybe so they could sell more of them later?

I don't know. It never made sense to me. I would think they would have been fine in warm climates where there isn't any road salt?
They used to sell body panels for them at the Warshawsky Auto parts too. You just unbolted a bad panel and tossed it and bolted a new one in it's place. Weird little car.
You know what happened to me one time when I was driving my brothers VW Beetle?? I was out on a date with my then girl friend when two of my brothers friends saw us parked in a Wendy's parking lot necking. They came up while we were busy making out and picked up the car with us in it and put it down sideways in the lot so we were blocking the drive to the Wendy's. My girl friend was screaming as they did this to us.
I nearly pissed myself laughing.

No pics just a lot of memory's, 68 that came from the apartment manager when I was in Hailey Id best snow car ever!! Not the best heater system for the cab, once winter set in had to chip the ice out on floor boards on occasion.
Manager also had late 60's camper van that would eat 350 chevy pickups going over Galena summit, heavily modified.

Speaking of modified bugs I knew a guy that once stuffed a 409 Chevy into one - Had to sit where the back seats were to drive it because everything had to be moved back to make room for the engine itself up front.

Oh yeah, there were all kinds of performance mods done to them. Big racing slicks on the back and huge engines in them. Crazy little cars.

Lol. Will post some stuff here later. Got to work today. Yes, I was a bug nut. I kinda knew you were gonna say that. My brother was too. He was nuts about these cars. The one his friends "picked me up in" was a 1969 VW Beetle. That one was white in color and stock for the most part. He had the Warshawsky heater add-on, and the windshield washer pump add-on. There was a white knob on the floor that you had to turn to bring heat into the car but it was never enough. My girl friend always complained that she was cold. My brother let me use that car for a while since my '72 Pontiac was in the shop and I had to get to and from work.
To this day, with all the beautiful performance cars my brother had. This is still one of his favorite cars. I don't get it.

When my brother put his feet thru the rusted out floor boards I laughed my ass off. He kinda looked like Fred Flintstone at that moment.

It is a cult. It's true. One of our drivers is a big time Bug guy. They are neat, but don't turn me on really. Have seen a few with some big modifications done and make one hell of a fast car. Never underestimate a bug if it doesn't look stock

HA! Found a few pics of my VW hotrod in my toolbox. Sorry about the crappy scans. The pics were taken in 1998. Started out as a 1974 Type 183 VW Thing. Put together a bored and stroked 1600 dual port motor with dual 40mm Webber carbs, bugpack cam, roller crank, Stinger exhaust. Final displacement almost 2 liters. Drove it like that for a while, just an ugly sleeper. Got bored over the winter and decided I needed to do something, so I cut it in half, made it a 2 door, and put it back together. It wound up having a 48' wheelbase. Pulled the front tire off the ground in 3 gears. Dump the clutch hard in 1st and you were straight up and down. lol Went through 3 Stingers before I added wheelie bars. My pics were pre bars. Turned so tight I could drive in the right garage door, u-turn inside the garage, and go out the left door. Here is a stock thing.

Pay no attention to that handsome young man. That guy looks like a trouble maker.
Man, my brother would love that car. I had forgotten about the Thing.
They were weird. And I guess that's what made them kinda cool at the same time.
Edit: When I would park cars on the lawn like that...........my Dad would kick my ass.
