PLEASE TURN BACK NOW IF THIS THREAD OFFENDS YOU. AT THE END OF THE DAY WE ARE NO DIFFERENT SO NO GRUDGES. IF YOU DON't LIKE SWEARING AND HAVE SOFT FEELINGS, PLEASE LEAVE AND DO NOT REPLY HERE. AGAIN NO GRUDGES OUTSIDE THIS THREAD. _____ _____ AMD is better. They have better laptops. They own the console segment. They have excellent performance to dollar ratio. AMD..... well they might just take all of the market. Never know. They seem to have been on a good roll lately. Oh gosh. AMD doesn't legacy benchmark well..... Only the less than 1% of PC users in the world would really care about it. Look at the bottom of the forum boys. Billions of people have no idea the difference or understand a word of what we speak of in this forum. Just be aware of that. So what's the real argument here? WHY is Intel so much gracefully better? 12% more performance @ 50% more $$

Might as well have a thread for it. You see the argument in every forum lol. Here, we'll just have a thread special for it.

Really? Nobody to defend Intel??
24 HOURS. IF NOBODY DEFENDS, THREAD LOCKS AND AMD IS A BETTER PROCESSOR MANUFACTURER AND ILL BE SURE TO WIKI THAT SHIT!

intel FTW! I got burned badly by intel hardware some 15+ years ago (pIII ages) when hardly nothing with intel CPU or RAM type was reasonably compatible, and my wallet did not take it well. Went with AMD and never looked back. Nowadays of course, I try out older intel stuff just for the fun of it, that stuff is cheap. Admittedly, all our work laptops¬ebooks are intel hardware.

Like the thread!!
Personally S462-S939 flat out sweet, AM2/3 good bang for the buck. Any socket with a plus on the end to me not real happy but I really haven't tried a lot of them.
Have the parts for a Intel daily but the new AMDs changed my mind.

Each company has its plus and minuses. Depends on needs and budget. Benching wise, 3D benching is a big NO-NO with Threadrippers. 2D benching has a lot of hardware points for AMD, but for globals Intel shines again.

I lost all hope for AMD with the introduction of their Bulldozer platform. I remember seeing some pre-production documentation regarding processor specs and damn did the FX look good on paper. But in the real world it proved to be lacking in multiple aspects, namely weak IPC, poor cache performance and a major question mark as to its true core count. AMD had a legitimate chance to improve their market share, instead we get a hot running, power hungry CPU that in some cases generates less performance than that of the high end Phenom II platform. Sure the idea of an eight core CPU for less than $300 is appealing but when push comes to shove, AMD failed to deliver, failed its fan base and failed to create a market niche for their FX lineup. AMD regressed and lost years of research and development on a sub-par chip. If I was CEO of AMD I would have fired the entire FX development team right then and there. Scrap the entire project and actually go toe to toe with Intel. And speaking to the crux of the problem: At that time, I think AMD had relegated itself to playing second fiddle to Intel. It's like the Buster Douglas verses Mike Tyson fight... you have to be brave enough to stand toe to toe to get a chance at knocking out the heavyweight champ, and AMD simply forfeited that opportunity. But let me be clear: AMD may have lost the round, but the war isn't over yet! My subjective take: I will never be a fan boy for AMD or Intel for that matter, because I sell out to performance, not brand.

AMD never had a chance going toe to toe. Intel has 100X the R&D money and resources.

Honestly, I don't like AMD or Intel any more. Fuck both the companies.
No more Bus clocking. It's gone.
I'm watching my Buddies now using artificial overclocking methods. It sickens me.
AMD, I liked overclocking my HT to high Mhz. What happened to the NB? It's now the same frequency as the Memory? Is that so?
Intel, we have better faster processors, here pay 3 legs an arm and some change from your buddies wife's purse. Bam here's that 12% IPC gain as promised. (the 12% is just a what ever number. I have no valid proof that Intel is only 12% faster, could be 13% for all I know)

Ah an AMD lovers Fantasy thread. Well Said George. But you dont need a threadripper to suck at 3D Ryzen in any form sucks at 3D fullstop but they can play 3D games sufficiently. Ryzen cold cant outrun my old X5960 on water with the 1080Ti in Vantage or any other 3D bench for that matter. And is still has a way to go from outrunning Intel in 2D either. AMD has made big inroads with Ryzen from the disgrace that the high clock no performance FX was and its a credit to them but they still aint really in the game. Comparing AMD to Intel CPU's is like comparing AMD to Nvidea Graphics they fall short in both departments. I havent played with a Ryzen based Laptop But I find it hard to believe one would be better than a intel laptop with Nvidea Graphics. I like AMD always have and for someone at home wanting to build a computer for home use e.g. a bit of video encoding a bit of gaming and an all round use computer you cant go wrong with one the price is great for 8 core 16 threads and they go pretty hard. Jon and Eddie have made good choices for home computers they go well and the price is right I have no problem recommending people build them for that purpose It all depends on the buyers preferences and what they want to do. Will we ever see the AMD glory days of dominance from 462 to AM2 (till the day core 2 came out) only time will tell but we aint there yet.

I just can't budget in Intel's top processors. Nor AMDs if you count threadripper. So because AMD has always been more affordable for a family dude like myself, that's what I've purchased.
It gets the job done. Games fine. does everything an Intel processor can do, even if you want to say at a somewhat slower pace..... At least I have a current Gen processor of something!
And my AMD doesn't have to touch Intel. When I read your guys posts, I just sit back and imagine the AMD rig your typing from.
Ozz, you have some random AMD sempron, George using a Barton core, Pete using a Paris core, Poor captain Scott he's stuck with a triple core Agena lol. Bricked at 3ghz.
Mine, I'm running a Conroe.

Running an Ivy myself ATM but in truth I've yet to see anything make me want to abandon AMD. Just what I happen to have for DD use right now and it's working just fine. At least the board I fixed earlier (Hero) is still acting perfectly, no issues to mention with it. Kinda weird I wound up going Intel right after Ryzen came to be but it happened - I'll have a Ryzen setup one day.

I love both Intel and AMD Jon. But I can only afford AMD so that is where I'm at. Both have pro's and cons. My analogy..........Intel is the F-22 Raptor and AMD Ryzen is now the F-35 Lightning II. Can the F-22 whoop it's ass?? Oh yeah, but the F-35 will still get you there and put a whoopin' on.

Now and then been checking fleabay for a reasonably priced higher end s939 X2 Athlon or Opteron. Prices are high. Can get a high end intel s775 cpu at a much better price. My DD is a FX-83xx with a nVidia GPU. And yes, we have a few FX's and a Ryzen in the house. For laptops, also think intel CPU paired with a nvidia GPU is my preferred choice. PTFE = Teflon

The settings are there in Apex X profiles. So it helps to set sub volts quicker. Northbridge is the SA volts in the modern bios. ie pci-e ram top half of the board. IO is your sata, usb bottom half of the board.
That's your PR sale spin on modern shit to confuse & delight us, these products are so magical interesting _____
Our Chis if he wasn't using that slow Amd shit, he'd be a lot further along in scores. Me I don't fight it ... dirty fast speed of the wintel's I laid with that devil long ago

Damn missed some fun stuff? I'm not a big fan boy of either but do have a soft spot for the underdog. As George pointed out they both have their strong points and once out of the general consumer/ gamer market AMD is pretty strong. Although the AVX-512 instruction set is making Intel look good I really don't know how long it will take to see it in common work related applications. As of July this year I'm able to work part time per my union retirement contract and AMDs strong points fit better with what I did / do for a living. www.anandtech.com/show/11891/best-cpus-for-workstations

Im not sure how the server market fairs. In favor of one or the other, but would assume core count over IPC matters most?

Pushed the button on a Threadripper, although went with 2950X over the larger core counts because of how the cores talk to the RAM.

AMD never had a chance going toe to toe. Intel has 100X the R&D money and resources. Yeah I get that point for the most part. Except AMD has gone toe to toe with Intel in past generations and won. So they are capable of putting up a good fight, this was just not the case with bulldozer/piledriver. Basically what I'm trying to say is that AMD could and should have done better than FX. Maybe not on par with Intel, but much closer anyway. And to be clear, I haven't lost faith in AMD. They have come a long way since the FX platform.

I sometimes wonder if AMD deliberately made the FX processors with long pipelines. It was a nifty design though. It enabled them to produce the highest frequencies ever recorded. They LOST IPC per core from Phenom II to FX however made up for it by sheer clock speeds lol. But yea the IPC counted for nothing, but yet hit milestones that Intel Owned for years. It seemed as if they did exactly what they wanted to do but just not in the conventional way every one thinks with performance.

Yeah, they went down the Pentium 4 path and in both cases the process node couldn't deliver the clock speeds within a sane power budget.

Was that not the point of the Intel sales pitch of the Pentium 4 and it sold? lol.

For the time being, when all stuff is wanted to be run on virtual machines and all kinds of software is put in Clouds, where real cores cost and then spread over virtual CPUs, then the above holds.
