GIGABYTE 990FXA-UD5 died a couple of weeks ago, after 642 subs don't feel all that bad about it but it was a pretty nice board.

thought id have a another go, delidding, i delidded the oppy 148 a goer, 200mhz+ more than the lid on,the 165 , i knew and felt the blade go in too far and shes dead, cant see anything i knocked but think its in the greeny part coz i remember the blade bein on too much of an angle, thats the way it goes, i knicked something, was completely my fault, goin to quick at it, so for the 939 comp im out unless i get the 4800+ earlier enough next week to have another go which i doubt, shes all over for me as far as dual cores goes yippity do da, i honestly thought id killed this 165 oppy last night, had another look at it this mornin and carefully scraped all the silicon off around the chip to see where id knicked it and couldnt see anything obvious, dunno why it didnt boot last night, i clrd cmos after replacing the delidded chip and was a no go 5 times, i put the 146 delidded in and it booted straight up, tried the 165 delidded and nope no go, put it back in this morning and bang straight into windows, im a happy boy , its been a pretty solid goer for me, as pete would say, there is a god

well i opened me big gob too bloody soon, , 165 seemed to be going fine, so went into the bios to reset settings to have another go at things and was starting to boot into windows again and all shut off, hit start button again and the cpu light comes on and off, checked the cpu and theres a little black mark near the chip itself, so put it back in again, and same thing happened, checked the chip again and that little black mark is now solder and a pungent burnt smell , was running the same settings in bios that i have been for weeks so no change there, the cpu said stuff you ive had enough of this stress im outta here for good, i just got the 7900gtx card delivered today too and was keen to see how she went with the oppy 165, but wont be with this oppy

8320 pretty much in the junk bin. It'll do 4.3 on all 8 @ 1.5v now. Not a stitch more. Will still do 5.2 on 4 cores or less. That tells me I have a few shitty cores.

New competition...
Winner gets a trophy from me, not HWBOT crap. Who will kill most HW next month.
Winner gets a 15 year old Dimples.
Start feeding 2.5Volts to the cpu's.

Think this could be a direct result of a de-lid? I killed one of the 2 FX-9590's trying to de-lid it. Cut the PCB with the razor. It was a said 210$ mistake XD Yup.

I know I pounded the crap out of it benching quite a few times. I'm sure that was a factor.

One thing we all have in common is this team. Let it be the glue that binds you.
Brakes on breaking your hardware. Unless your getting big points, it's not always worth the risks.
For the pile of dead hardware, does it matter if it was purchased that way? Does it count? XD Got a couple few dead ones in the mail....

i do know this tho shrimpy, delidding a 478 skt cpu really isnt the best way to go, all the ones ive done, prob 3-4 or so now, they actually are hotter delidded than lidded, dunno why but according to the hardware monitor readings in the bios and performance ive found, ive had better performance with them lidded

Ozzy my older wiser brother..... If you lived closer, I'd make and send you a cooling plate. Mine is about double the mass of any IHS plate and does wonders for de-lidded chips. It's roughly off my head without actually measuring it.... 1/8th inch thick and probably about 50mm square.
I've also have lapped a Morgan US silver Dollar. These are made mostly of Silver metal (pure) and about the mass size of most IHS plates. The difference between the silver and copper is roughly 4c the silver being cooler.
The best advise I can give you is to stay away from plated water blocks. What I mean is the base of the block is the only metal part. Something like the HeatKiller block or similar with lots of copper mass gives superior cooling temps for a couple of reasons. One is it can retain a larger amount of heat. The other is the ability to cool the out side of the water block actively with fans because the metal will dissipate internally and externally.
I've done tons of homework. If you would combine just the 2 things I've mentioned above with a delided chip, you can shave off up to 8c with ambient cooling.

appreciate that shrimpy, wished i could use the block i have for the 478 , it has 2 copper plates, 5mm thick each, but the top plate doesnt fit, i am going to buy another and redrill the top plate to fit the 478 and other sockets, its no good for intel am2-3 tho, the copper plate size is 60 x 60 mm and hits the SS hold down clamp thing on intel, intel will take 50 x 50 mm, any bigger hits the outside og the SS hold down attached to the mobo, after you take the top hold down off, especially with delidded coz theres no ihs plate, other than grinding a chamfer on the copper plate or removing the actuall SS hold down clamp thing then grinding down the sides so it doesnt hit the outsides of the plate its no good, but i do have 2 swiftech apogee gt blocks i bought and havent tried them yet and pete gave me another top plate for am2 and im going to try them on delidded, i know i should be getting at least 5c better temps and they do run quite warm normally, the screws on this block shouldnt be where they are now lol, the threads gave up so i changed it round a bit, gotta re thread the hole and put the screws in from the top how it used to be...i would say 90% of all my subs in bot ans any comp ive been in have been with this water block www.ebay.com.au/itm/201588489822?_trksid=p2055119.m1438.l2649&var=500802306882&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT
