The wife suggested I get into lifting weights again. So we started small at Walmart and got a 40lb set for 15$. Comes with 2 dumb bell bars with clamps and 4x 7.5lb and 4x 2.5lb weights.
Feeling the burn already. 2 sets of 12 reps with 30lbs is no joke. It's been many years since I've done this!!!

I do. Always have. Wouldn't mind getting rid of the belly chubs though. I did some sit ups also.
Health Scotty. Not getting younger over here ya know.....

ah, then overall it should be easy. If you want to lose the belly, focus on core exercises, sit-ups actually don't do that much to help you. crunches while holding your legs up will do you a lot better and be less strain on your back; www.google.ca/search?q=leg+up+crunch&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8&gws_rd=cr&ei=vvu2WODIL4OVjwSupJ6ICwif you find the crunches too easy, add one of the weights you have to your chest. focus on the core, the arms and legs will keep up and tone as you go. Walking a lot will burn that excess belly fat. Especially if you wear ankle weights and wrist weights. Good to do before weight lifting to warm up. Less weight and more reps will give you much better definition as well.

Thanks for the replies! Had to jet out and get off to work.
When I do sit ups, I put my arms over my head and keep them there. This adds weight without using barbells. I do crunches also, but not the same day as sit ups. Haven't gotten a good routine down yet really. Don't have a gym membership or anything, but at least we're starting somewhere.
Walking? I do a lot of that at work. So to get the heart rate up, jumping jacks and work out videos help.
What do you guys think. 1/2 hour to an hour a day should be good right?

Vin is hitting on the most important part of this whole thing...............food. You must eat a very healthy low fat, low carb diet to get anything out of your workout otherwise it's for nothing. Lot of fruits and veggies, lean meats, fish and poultry. Fried food are out. No processed sugar. That means nothing made with white flour. Cookies, cakes, donuts are out. You want whole wheat and whole grains. No McDonalds, Burger King, KFC........etc.
I am in the process of getting lean and mean Shrimp. It is not easy after years of abuse to my body but I am already seeing some great results. Oh yeah, you might want to start watching a lot of Rocky flicks for inspiration............LMAO. I do.
Edit: I did give up beer. Haven't had one in well over a year. It's poison for me now.

Oh I probably eat horribly in the standards of health if you want honesty. Cheeze and meats are my main food group, however I do try and eat vegies now and then.
Eating before bed helps me fall asleep. Probably the worst thing I could be doing. At least a glass of milk 2% before bed helps. Love milk. Glass a day at least.

Eating before bed helps me fall asleep. Probably the worst thing I could be doing. At least a glass of milk 2% before bed helps. Love milk. Glass a day at least. You need to kick that... all together... milk is fine during the day. but any weight (talking heavy food items) to your night time snack will kill all your chances and put everything your doing aside... Go for a walk (3-4mi) at a descent pace about an hour after supper, get your heart rate up. Then once your home, about 2 hours before bed (but before 8-9pm) you can have a light snack (veggies, oil based dressing as a dip, if you don't like them on their own) Don't start anything drastic, that'll shock your body and in time you'll bounce back and gain it back. this is why diets don't work, you eventually stop dieting.... Healthy living/eating/existing is a lifestyle change, do too much at once you'll be miserable and bounce back.... make small calculated changes over time... if you have now decided that you need to make a change, then start with only walking 3-4mi a few days a week.. like Mon/Wed/Fri, leave weekends for you. and to update your diet, just add more fruit and colourful veggies to your existing meals... small baby step it.. please trust me on this one. Vin

OK Vin, I'll take that advice happily! And I mean it. Because most people do the drastic change and you are completely right about that!
So here's what I'm thinking. Instead of Milk, I'll do water before bed. However you won't catch me walking 4 miles. I'm sorry it will make me unhappy. What would 4 miles on a bicycle equate to? 8-10 miles I'm assuming? Either way that will already be a big change. I'm still getting caught up on house work, camper stuff, just all kinds of things that consume my time while having a family of 5 to take care of, me included in that 5.
I really need to start small in the aspect of walking. Not complaining, but I'm flat footed. After the first mile my feet will burn and if I wear the arch inserts, those cause blisters. So I don't ever wear them anyways. Doc says hip problems in the future because of that. I could swing maybe a half mile here and there.
I will talk to my wife about my meals. I can resist fast food no problem because of the pricing. At work rarely do I eat out for lunch. But I'll send Peggy to the store and add some wanted Veggies to the list and be sure to include them more often to my high protein meals. Which I also need to start getting into lean meats because of Gallbladder problems. Was also diagnosed with "NAFLD fatty Liver Disease". In other words VIN, your right on the money about my diet!
Not quite 40 and the problems have already started.

Try having a glass of Metamucil before bed. It is a good source of fiber and will hold your hunger back some plus it has some awesome benefits for your digestion and over all health. Make sure you take it with plenty of water and keep it suspended in the water by stirring it constantly with a spoon. I just drink a full glass down in one gulp in the evenings and morning after breakfast. I like the orange flavored one the best.
You are doing the right thing by worrying and starting to take care of things now. You may be able to avoid a lot more serious problems later by taking action now. But remember, this is a change of life style and not a diet. This is forever. You want to look at food differently now. Your body will be looking for the best quality fuel you can feed it now. Lean, fat free, sugar free high quality. If you do this thing right you will see some awesome results.
You know Jon, we take better care of our cars than we do our bodies. That really has to change.

ya, if you can get your family involved the in healthy lifestyle that will help a lot. Then if you slack off they will help you get back on track.. remember it takes a village. At my heaviest I was 245lbs (I'm 5'8", so I was a fat fuck). drank like a fish (6-12 beers a night) and during a physical was diagnosed with early signs of pancreatic cancer and liver disease. I started healthy hard as I had too. stopped drinking cold turkey, started eating better and first started walking (tried to run but couldn't as I didn't have the right technique or endurance). 6 months after I was 190lbs, and this is just walking 5km (3mi), 5 days a week and eating good (still cheating on sweets here and there), beer was a lite beer, little here and there... maybe a 6 pack a month. Saturdays I didn't walk but kept active at home... Sundays were total off days for working out and that's where i laxed on the what I ate too. my weight got stuck there (190lbs) for 2 months... Doc wanted me in the 170lb-175lb area.. so 15-20lb off... I then started the Shaun T Insanity workout and did it for 60 days. that got me down to 160lbs. I could run 10km (6.2mi) in about 28 minutes. felt great. Could run marathons. had insane energy, slept amazing and had more vitality than when I was in high-school.... I was able to keep this up for 2 years. my falling out was the hopes my wife would continue the healthy food shopping/cooking as I then started to work way too much to spend the 6hr/week (with shopping) to prep the weeks worth of food (my wife turned in to a stay at home mom). I also started working 12hr shifts and rotating between days and nights (7am-7pm, then 7pm to 7am)... My wife couldn't, she had health issues come up so convenience and quick meals (lots of pasta and rice meals) that was 4 years ago, I've slowly crepped back up to 215lbs... I have a new job (started on Monday), and a little time so I've started with healthy eating/living again wife is now on board with it this time much more than last time and she's buying better food. So we're both trying to keep each other in check. It's hard to start, so baby steps.... if you can get your wife and kids involved, it'll be easier for you and everybody. when walking/running I have an app on my phone that tracks the route, distance, calories burned and it'll also connect via Bluetooth to a heart rate monitor (i don't have one, but plan for it this round)... I use Endomondo ( www.endomondo.com/) just the free version... not the paid. So that's my experience with all this, I just wanted you to know that I wasn't talking out of my ass... lol Keep this thread going if we can.... remember, it takes a village to keep it easy, but each person within, needs to identify the usefulness to joining and contribute.... Last year I was diagnosed with Diabetes, High Cholesterol and I was a bit over weight. My fasting glucose was in the 300 range and my A1C was at 10.6. My glucose now averages in the 100-120 range and and my A1C is at 5.5. I was a stroke waiting to happen. I have since changed my life around. I'm not at my goals yet but I am working on it. You are not alone in this. If I can change things around at my age, you guys sure can. I'm 58 years and kicking some ass.

you got some damn good advice here shrimpy, it would be a wise choice to heed it, it is a life style change, a commitment, not just a weight loss fad, beleive me , youre getting near 40, next minute youll be 60 and wonder where it all went, i know i said the same thing, time just flys by, but ive been very lucky, i can eat and drink what i like and theres no change, i stay around the 70-75 kilo mark all the time and have done for many years now, the heaviest ive been was 83 kilos when i was driving coaches around australia, in restaraunts 3 times a day for the passengers and sittin on me arse driving the rest, no excercise and too much food, especially the wrong types of foods means weight gain, the old saying you are what you eat is so true along with good regular excercise and god willing youll live to be a healthy old age, i wish all you blokes the best with what youre doing

I will do my best to change some things in my eating habits for sure. AND your guys advise is sound! Being most of you are a little bit older, and have been there and done it.... well I'll follow the path you've laid before me.
I've lost a few lbs already from restricting how much I eat rather than changing much in my diet. But really my diet is bad. Monster Energy drinks at least one a day. I can't stand coffee, so that is my resort. And it's costly. Old habits are tough man.
I'm down to 193.6 pounds right now, but it fluctuates from day to day. I gain .5 or loose .5 and I figure the scale has to have some margin of error too. A couple of months ago I was nearly 210lbs and have tipped the scales at 215 at one point.
Gotta ask something to you guys..... As we get older, eating seems more... ummm... fun? Entertaining? Friends Family Beer and Steaks. Baked potatoes fully loaded. Gimmie a fat 1/2 lb burger like now and I want it bleeding a little with some good old fashioned Cheddar cheeze or even deli slice American cheeze. Not that processed crap. Wife makes a killer Ranch sauce from a ranch packet and sour cream. Could eat that for days?
Anyone have this problem? Or is it just me taking to food so easily. Flavors. Mmm.. Noooo. Gotta resist all the good foods that are so bad for me!

Don't take any advice from me. I live for the day. I have the worst eating habits, smoke, and beat up my body daily. When your numbers up, your numbers up. Period. Might as well enjoy your life. BTW, I'm 6' 185#'s, so not exactly unfit.

Gosh Scotty your maybe 10 lbs overweight! lol. I still smoke too. Much less now working only one job. Less than a pack a day if Im busy enough at home.
So far today, no food. I'm shooting for one decent meal at supper time and try to hold snacking.
Gotta get up to the camper today. We have a Raccoon visitor I need to remove promptly!

Eat three meals a day Jon. You need the body fuel. Just make sure it's good low fat, low carb. You can eat dude. You don't have to starve yourself. Have some fruits and veggies to start the day. Salads without and creamy or cheesy dressings are good. Vinegar and olive with spices is good in your salads. An egg maybe for the protein too. And don't be in a big hurry, It took a while to get out of shape and it's gonna take a while to change things around. Ever have radish sandwich on whole wheat bread? Pretty good with a little Country Crock vegetable margarine.
I stopped smoking 16 years ago and I am so glad I did. I really think I would be dead now if I hadn't. Nasty stuff those cigs.
I want to straighten some things out so I can be a much more healthy person too Jon. My grandfather ate lots of fish and home grown veggies........he lived to be 110 years old..Ugh. All of my grandparents lived long lives. They didn't eat no city food as they used to say. LOL.

On the weekends, maybe a bagel in the morning.........sometimes. Farmers hours. Up by 4:30am, bed no later than 10:00pm. Been doing this for like 30 years.

I've seen a picture of you. I'd think 180-190 if you had some meat on your body would be a decent weight. But then again we used to build muscle back in the day. Used to Wrestle so it was common place to find me at the gym. That wore off once legal drinking age hit lol. But from hard work at the suspension shop, I was able to retain decent muscles through the years, the fat is just packed mostly around the mid section of my torso.
Don't break your old Habit Scotty. All I know is that sudden and drastic change can cause more problems than sticking to the usual.
Tobacco. I love the smell of it. Some people like coffee. I cannot stand the taste, but the smell is great.

Doing a 5km (3mi) walk/run daily (trying too anyway) last night I got it down to a 39min walk/run... in the last week I've been able to shave 3 min from my average. Figured out that I wasn't eating enough protein and was ass dragging during the run.
Bumped that up and I'm feeling pretty good while doing it after 8pm.

I knew, but when I went through my food plan I misjudged my actual intake to what I thought I was eating. I had a can of Tuna or Salmon in all my salads and sometimes chunk on the side. But while trying to run I was literally dragging my feet. only thing I can think of is that my body wants a little more. I've added Avocado, Broccoli and Asparagus to my salads as well... Vin

Down to 186 pounds. It's working out!! seriously, I'm not giving a lot of effort into working out, but have slowly changing my eating habits and diets. Next on the list, destroy soda pop habit. This one will be toughest. Nothing like a god old rum and coke. (without the rum 99% of the time)
