A commonly found board you can try for getting a handle on Socket A is an Asus A7N8X Deluxe 2.0 or the A7N8X-E, both being decent clockers with the right BIOS and relatively cheap in comparison..... Mr. Scott should have it after I subbed it a long time ago. If not I can dig it out no prob.
Would hold you over until an Abit or something better comes along.

You'll probrably get 220 or so on the bus from it and that's probrably it. Has plenty of options with a good range but the board being what it is won't do as well since it's an earlier DFI NF2 board. Would be best used with a Barton mobile or Tbred with a high multiplier such as an XP-2400, those being decent to good clocking chips overall, even the older ones tend to be decent with my 0306 dated example having gone past 2.7GHz in CPU-Z and has good benching speeds too on the right cooling. hwbot.org/submission/1029015_bones_cpu_frequency_athlon_xp_2400_(thoroughbred)_2719.1_mhzhwbot.org/submission/2611335_bones_superpi___1m_athlon_xp_2400_(thoroughbred)_40sec_250msAs for the Ultra A's I have one and thats what it will do but no more. If you happen to spot a DFI Ultra II Infinity for the right price jump on it since trying to find an Ultra B is next to impossible nowadays in any decent condition...... If you find one at all. This past Summer I got EXTREMELY lucky and ran across 2 Infinty's that needed recapping work... and that was all. They were being sold as "Untested" and were stated for parts or repair. These looked almost as if they were brandnew boards as received, the caps themselves appeared to have swollen from sitting in storage or something, not from actual use. Best of all I got both for less than what one alone would normally go for, shipping included! Both worked as was when I got them and tested - Recapped one for use and set the other back for later/spare.

ok right thx, ill just take my time with it, i always keep my eyes peeled on what dfi stuff is around, if i find something i think maybe worth it ill ask first from the people that know, i learnt my lesson a long time ago not to just go buying anything that comes up , atm im setting up the foam pads for the venus for the OSIBIS with the apogee gt water block, i want the heights spot on. its nearly there now but i want it right so i know its right for the best cpu coverage and socket seal for the cold water

I have in the past went ahead and bought an item because it was something that wasn't easy to find and would only be more expensive and even harder to find later on. Doesn't mean to just jump on anything you see so still be picky about price and shop around, sometimes good deals can still be found.
I'd also check out the "For parts or repair" listings and think about what you find, I've had decent to good luck there and the items for the price were worth the risk. Yeah, sometimes stuff is truly dead and you never really know but I've had more hits than misses buying stuff that way. If you do look it over carefully AND pay attention to what the seller says about it - Sometimes what they say in the listing tells the true story.
With listings that have the option to make an offer this means there is some wiggle room on price and I'd take advantage of it, again what the seller says about it will give a hint whether it's something they are just wanting to sell or something they are trying to move as in be rid of it period, the reason(s) why is an indicator of how much wiggle room you have. Normally a 10 to 15% lowball on the listed/buy it now price works but if it appears to be something they are really wanting to move I'd go lower with an offer such as maybe 20% less, picked up those two Infinity's for about 30% less than the listed price for both shipped.
They were $49.95 each shipped as an untested item(s) and I made an offer for $35 each shipped, that saved me alot of money in the end.

im gunna go with what scotty said b4 ---For you Shane, I would suggest an AN7. No modding necessary and it's a solid almost trouble free board, so ill keep my eyes out for a version 2 with black ram slots, and i like abit boards, my abit IC7 MAX3 is a cracker board, and appreciate your help and advice rods, the dfi nf11 pete gave me will do me for what i have now no probs

When you get an AN7 have spare CMOS batteries onhand, the Uguru chip eats them and begs for more. Hopefully you'll get a good one.
Until you find one the Ultra A should teach you a few things about Socket A.

Until you find one the Ultra A should teach you a few things about Socket A. i bought a pack of 20 cmos batteries the other week, i learnt that trick a while ago too, make sure the cmos battery is good, plays all sorts of tricks with bios if it isnt, im sure ill be happy enough with the DFI NF11, pete fitted a ram voltage trimmer to it when he had it as well which will help im sure

Dont play with that trimmer if you adjust it down to zero resistance it will damage the controller just leave it until I show you how to measure the voltage the best you will do with that trimmer is 3.2v In fact you can turn the trimmer 3 turns to the right like you are tightening up a screw.

Once Mac shows you the ropes you'll be fine, just take it easy and get a feel for what the system wants to run - Could be the one he gave you will do better than mine does.
Just finished recapping the other Infinity and got the Soyo BIOS I found flashed onto another BIOS chip in case the one that was in it is truly bad. Still need to recap it but will do that before too long.

I have got the disk and all the accessories. The disk has the Silicon Image Sata Raid driver on it. When I first started benching I had a NF7 with 2 OCZ agility SSD's set up in Raid0 and a Gainward Bliss 7800GS AGP card and I was getting Gold Gold Gold in PCMark05 and a lot of Gold in PCMark04 but sucked in SPI and Wprime. You dont need the disk to install XP in IDE mode.
