Upgraded my HTPC and Home Server
Added a Vantec UGT-ST644R SATA3 RAID card, needed some more SATA ports and was hoping to take advantage of the 5GB/s speeds that the card would add. Not at all planing on using the RAID feature...
The Plan was to put both SSD's on the Add-in card to use the SSD speeds properly...
Once I added the card, I lost the ability to select my Hard Drive boot priority...
before adding the card;
after adding the card;
After a few hours of trying the OS SSD in every port, I've had to add my boot drive to the marvel SATA controller port 0, it's the only port the Bios picks up the Boot Drive and boots without pressing F12 and selecting it.
I have 2 SSD's in this system. the first is an OCZ Vertex 3 (OS) and the other is a Samsung 840 Pro (Virtual Machine).
In the below screenshot I tried both SSD's in either slot (MB OB SATA2 and the Vantec SATA3 Add-in)... and then also did a test with the boot drive to the Marvel SATA6 port.. not the speeds I wanted for my boot drive but it's close to the Vantec Add-in card..
RAID Struggles... the Plan, add two 2TB WD Blacks in RAID 0 using the Onboard MB RAID and migrate the server DATA (2TB) to the new 4TB GPT Partition...
the FAIL; the Host PC could see the 4TB partition, I could add files/folders to it. But passing the physical drive to my virtual machine was not possible and it didn't assign the sectors position properly that putting a VHD (Virtual Hard Drive) on it was not possible. it couldn't format the 4096 sector properly it seems (1024/2048 isn't supported for VHD's)
So I ended up moving the two 2TB drives to the Vantec card and setup the RAID0 and everything is working without a hitch, 4TB disk is there visible to my Virtual Machine and I can populate VHD's on to it...
So this server isn't completely setup the way I wanted, but at least its finally coming together....
I've been fighting with this for 3 days... I just wan't to Git'er Done and put her back in the closet..
if you have any thoughts, please share. this was more of a vent post as there is nobody near me that would understand these struggles
I'm moving a few TB of data now (light in the tunnel is not visible) once the data is moved I'll run a few HDD benches to see how this RAID really fares.
